1. I could do with some lessons, but I'm afraid my unique "crapness" might be stifled!
2.
I really like a few of their songs not for the bass just the songs themselves. I can see why someone would take a dislike to him. At first glance he has a cockiness I think.
He certaily did back in he 80s! Its an Interesting idea that because a player has great ability he also has to be a "jesus" character. Perhaps I am alone in being able to like an artists work, but not want to "prop up a bar" with them! Another two that come to mind are 'Flea' and 'Tony Franklin'. Not my cup of tea I'm afraid. I like Adele, but I think the Skyfall theme is awful! I am sorry if I have offended any fan clubs, I am not "trolling" or "spinning" or whatever else. Its just my opinion! I will gladly post a list of things that I like to allow those aggrieved souls to "get there own back"!
3.
I think what you are describing is called a 'layover' (not a sleepover or a lie-in btw). Guitarists do it a lot. You are right, if you get more than one string sounding at once it will sound naff. Alternative approaches: 1. Use different LH fingers. 2. Drag your fretting finger across the strings as you play (sweep fretting!?) 3. 'Roll' you LH mini-barre (Stop already! I'm ahead of you!) so that by the time you sound the second note, the first has stopped ringing. 4. If any of the notes can be played as an open string, precede or follow it with the other note fretted on that string. 5. Damp unwanted strings with your RH thumb or finger(s). That should be enough to be going on with!
Yeah, great reply thanks. You explained it a lot better than I did! Many thanks, Mike
4.
Eh? Is this a serious post or just an attempt at trolling? Have you actually met him? What don't you like about him (especially if you haven't met him)?
Are you seriously suggesting that I am 'wrong' because you like someone that I dont! That is scarey!
5. There is a little phrase where I need to actually pluck the string and move quickly to the next. Barring means the first string will ring and it doesnt sound right. Three strings on one fret. Does this makes sense?
6. Should you just bridge the strings with one finger. I have big hands and fingers, should it be a struggle
7. He has a great talent. But, there's something about him that I dont like.
8. Damn! I've waiting for one of these to come up for a while now. But all those modes have pushed it out of my price range I'm afraid Good luck with it though
9.
For me, John is one the greats of fretless bass playing, alongside Jaco and Bakithi Kumalo. He just has such a wonderful vocal thing going on. Never before have I heard someone so able to make the bass sound like a human voice and he really can get right inside the instrument and make it touch your heart, which is incredible. His playing on Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heights" is my favourite of his. I only wish I liked the rest of Kate's stuff so I could hear more of him! He is cruelly underrated! The phrase in this at 02:24 is so powerful and perfect it is heartbreaking. Absolutely incredible.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1DDndY0FLI I think that we all secretly have our favourite Kate Bush track. Even though this could not be further from my usual musical taste I love the way this song is crafted. It is full of sexual inuendo and images but so tasteful. From the lyrics of a girl being led into womanhood. The way she is dressed and the way she moves through the woods, the song builds beautifully. She was and still is a very beautiful woman
10.
What tuner do you have?
Just one of those plastic cheapy things
11.
Does your tuner pick up any note, or is it fixed at EADG via a slider / selecter. If the latter, set it to D and all should be well.
I thought setting it to "chromatic" would do it, but it doesnt seem to work? So, I am looking at tuning the E standard but at the second fret to give "d"?
12. Am I missing something obvious. My digital tuner wont let me get anything by an E for my top string, is there a trick for this or do I need a "supa duper" tuner!
13. [sub]I have also pondered on getting a kit. There are a few other suppliers that have some interesting kit projects as well.[/sub] [sub]The body, neck and hardware are pretty sound and obviously they use there bulk buying to get the price down. But, I would need to hear the pups as they are not a branded item and if they need updating could well bring the price of the kit way above £120! [/sub] [sub]Just my opinion, no harm intended![/sub]
14. It seems to me that you can buy 3 different scatchplates from 3 different suppliers and they will be slightly different sizes!
15. Are these old amps worth getting repaired. Is it financially viable. I like the old thing, but its only a practice amp. My only experience is of HiFi type electronic repairs which can get expensive quickly, are there still experts in valve technology! I do feel lik'e betamax man'!
16. My old valve amp is suffering from fading sound after about 10-15 mins, Does this sound terminal? Thanks
17.
Hi all, looking forward to being a member and learning from the masters on here ... Used to have a Fender Precision fretless back in the day but sold it mid 80s to my eternal regret. Played through an HH bass bin - sold that as well - and my Peavey amp. Now looking to pick up playing again a quarter of a century or so on (just for fun) ... Looking for advice on a decent bass to learn on ... don't want to spend a massive amount on my first one back but just after VFM. Don't want to buy a cheapo one and then in six months have to buy another. Yamaha RBX range maybe or an Ibanez look half decent. Already been through the classifieds on here! Some lovely stuff - just mostly outta my price range methinks! Better off buying a cheaper one new or an older one s/hand? Cheers all
I had a 30 year hiatus before returning to my love of bass guitar. I had to go through half a dozen kids, a wife, bankruptcy. But when I got my first bass it felt like it did when I first picked one up at 15! I returned home to an empty house and was almost jumping up and down with excitement. I agree with all the comments made and you have fortunately found an excellent and friendly forum with genuine advice from guys that have learned from experience. I would agree that back in the day was easier to buy quality instruments. Nowadays it seems to be awash with cheaply made stuff. But and there is a big but. You now have the internet to help you research parts and modifications to make a silk purse out of a sows ear. I decided to "make" a jazz to get into the swing. By the time I had sourced the parts I should have just gone out and bought a squier! I have an RBX that I have defretted and this is now my leaning. I am looking at upgrading to a quality fretless, just watching whats for sale so if you see something be quick or I will buy it first! Good luck mate, welcome back its the best thing you've done!
18. What sort of hardware and pups does it have?
19. I knew I woudlnt be able to afford it, but I still had to look at the pics. One day. when my lottery numbers come up. I will have one of these beauties!!! Good luck selling it though
20. On a slightly different tack, I've got hands like a gorilla and fingers like pork sausages but I dont think I can move stretch as well as I could when I was 16! Interestingly, didnt the victorians used to have "stretching tools " for piano students. I think I remember seeing one of these instruments of torture on the antiques roadshow
21. It may be something totally unconnected but I noticed in the sellers 'buying history' that he bought a six string bass bridge just before you bought this. Perhaps the two things are connected
22. If you bought the guitar with a "declared fault" thats one thing, but if he sold you a "faulty guitar" then you really should be attempting to get your money back, regardless of how nice he's being. Ebay are pretty good, how long have you had it?
23. Hi, before you start tearing the bass to bits, did you buy new or used. Because, if you bought this as a working instrument, someone has some explaining to do?
