1. Should have spent the money on decent pickups!
2.
The green P bass in 1979 - so not quite sure when he stopped using it?
Great tone but still not the same cutting bright tone as on the first stranglers album. This recording just sounds like an ordinary "p".
3.
I have finally persuaded my band to do Nice 'n' Sleazy, I know how to play it, but I am struggling to get JJ's tone right. Normally, I'm not too worried about perfecting tones when doing covers, but for this one, I feel I need to get as close to it as possible, to do it justice. I have a Darkehorse precision with a maple board and Thumper pup, a Warwick Corvette and a Ibanez SR1200 to choose from in the way of basses. For the amp, I have a Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0 going through Genz Benz 1x12 & 2x10 cabs. As far as effects go, I have the following: Line6 Pod X3 Live Ashdown Lomenzo Bass Hyper-Drive Dodd Stereo Flanger Digitech Bass Multi Voice Chorus Boss Super Octave OC-3 Boss Compression/Sustainer CS-3 Marshall Guv'nor GV-2 Zoom B2 Multi-Effects All tips and advice would be very welcome! Cheers in advance.
I must admit I think Baroque Bordello is a good song and underrated. Good bass line!
4. I think its all about the demise of vinyl. Buying a "record" was always an event. Being able to enjoy the cover artwork, Seeing what goodies where tucked inside, song sheets, posters, stickers. Nice poster inside the Black Sabbath - Technical ecstacy album! CDs seem to removed that pleasure. I remember watching 'Tomorrows World' when they showcased the new technology of compact disc. They were supposed to be mostly indestructable; you could scratch it, drop it and if I remember correctly, they even put some jam on one and it played. They were also quite thick in the early days. The promise of cheaper production costs was never passed on to the consumer. The album prices just transferred and then increased while the quality of the cds went down. Until we have the fussy items now that are no better than the vinyl they were supposed to replace. Another aspect that is important is the mostly electronic music is more suited to this technology. Listening to artists and their instruments that are so heavily modified just for the sake of "dance". I used to love the search for sonic perfection with HiFi. My friends would compare listening to albums and trying to extract as much information and detail as possible. I remember playing the AC/DC track 'Hell aint a bad place to be' to a friend on my HiFi system. I walked him through how great it was hearing angus 'fingering the strings' 'palm muting' and even the click of the pickup switch. When he played the record on his stereo he could only hear half of it. Golden days. But, are there people like me who want to hear a real musician play a real instrument warts and all!
5. I know this is probably a bit off topic. But I heard on a radio programme a few days ago that some councils/landlords forbid bare floorboards on properties where people are living below. I didnt catch the whole programee and you dont make it clear whether practise upstairs is above a pub or upstairs in your house. I was quite surprised, but for anyone living in a flat it may be worth checking your tenancy agreement closely. But, its just a thought.
6. I picked up mine for £20 off gumtree, fantastic guitar for the money. I just needed to sort out the electrics and then pulled out the frets etc. I am happy with it so far "but" would like to find an economic pup upgrade. Mine only has one 'pbass' type pup though? Thanks for the offer but I'm a long way from you, I get panicky if I go further north than Watford!
7. Has anyone any experience of upgrading one of these. Particuarly interested in a bridge replacement. I have picked one of these up and converted to fretless; even though I am pleased with the outcome I wonder if I can squeeze a little me out of it. Cheers
8.
Nope - they wanted a Precision for both the sound and the look. I'd have been perfectly happy to play the gig on a Wal, and my fretless would have sounded great, but it's not hard to see how it would have looked wrong. I did get a choice when it came to which hat I wore ... So I can't blame anyone else ... I like fedoras.
Seeing you in the suit and hat stood at the back brought this to mind! lol http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ur6GcXXWrV4
9.
there's been loads of threads on this subject, here's 2 http://basschat.co.u..._1#entry1337619 http://basschat.co.u...nd-on-an-ampeg/ once JJ had broken his green P in half even he couldn't quiet get that sound again, it really is unique
Spot on! Yes, even JJ could not get that tone back again. It was the right guitar, amp, studio combination that gave their first album that unique bass sound. Stop worrying about trying to get that exact tone, it doesnt stop JJ playing now!

Cheers in advance.
You will go mad trying to get the studio sound, in the early days he had the amps loud when recording. Even JJ never quite got that original sound again. Listen to a few live recordings too but dont underestimate the wonderful 'dirty' sound of his bass. Even though he digs in the playing is always fast and very clean.
11. Well thats weird. I had a Hondo rick copy back in the 70s when I was a kid. It used to do exactly the same thing. Once it popped it was never right again. It was still like it when I sold it back then. Good guitar for the money too if I remember correctly. Good luck with it, I wish I still had mine
12. OK, I will watch that and see where it ends up! Although, with all the holes under my bridge it's starting to look like a dart board
13. Check, check and check again! I have recently fitted a new bridge where none of the holes from the original bridge could be used. Even after endless checking and measuring it is still a little out. I am face with having to fill the holes and redrill just to move it down 3/16ths of an inch! Believe me, if its not right you will see it every time you look at the guitar!
14. Wow yeah, the fancy 3D Schaller bridge would solve my problems but it would be cheaper to just buy a new guitar! Because I only need to move the bridge a very small amount, say 3/16th, I would not be able to drill new holes that close to the existing ones without filling and starting from scratch! Hmmph!
15. My 'bitza jazz' needs the bridge moving down just a smidge for the string spacing to be just right. It plays fine but it bugs me when I look at it. The amount it has to move is probably less than a screw hole width so I wondered if anyone has a tip for moving the bridge this small amount. I wondered if glueing a match in the existing holes would drop it enough or if the bridge screws would find their way back into the old holes again. The (stellah) bridge has completely different hole positions to the original and there are a lot of screw holes down there now. I feel that perhaps I should remove the bridge and fill all the holes and start again but this would be a major job and I dont want to get into refinishing the body as well. Help?
16. He was good in this!
17. Ive done the fretless conversion and been playing the neck untreated. Im happy with my work but the guitar has a very metallic bright sound so im going to get rid of the roundwound strings first. I realise the Yamaha naturally has this sort of tone and wondered if I could change pups to get a warmer more rounded tone. Thanks
18.
Yup!!! That's the price!!
Thought he might have forgotten to put a 1 in front of the £60!
19. Just checked the price list on his website and he has a 'de-fret' down as £60? Is that right!
20. OK, thanks for the advice. As I said, I am going to try the neck untreated first, but what you've said about the lacquer makes sense.
21. Ok, thanks for the advice. I have just got back into this and all the frets are out. I am just pondering on which colour wood filler to use. I intend to sand it and try playing before I decide on any further work on the neck. If I decided to lacquer the fretboard, could I use automotive aerosol lacquer. Much easier than painting with a brush?
22.
I have one of each and the epoxy coated has (IMHO) a better feel. My de-fretted Jazz is just standard rub down and oiled. It plays well and I love it but it just isn't the same as the epoxy. Personally, why not try playing it first then decide if you dont like the feel and coat it. (Don't oil it though, just play it). I use flats on mine btw.
After filling the fret slots and rubbing it down, what needs doing before it is ready to play? I thought it would need a once over with lemon oil?
23. I have read a few posts and I realise there is a mix of opinion. I am currently doing a defretting job on a Yamaha and wondered if I just fill the fret slots and rub the rosewood fretboard down smooth, a coat of lemon oil is enough. Is it worthwhile going the extra step of a high gloss epoxy/varnish type finish? Cheers
