1.
Yeah, it was a '74 (supposedly) CAR Jazz and the poor guy paid top dollar for it only to find it was a bitsa.
I remember it well, poor guy, not nice when you here about that.
  2.
Don't know what became of Mr 2-Gnome-Attic. He was a guy over here who got well and truly ripped off by Tune-O-Matic and was posting spoof ebay listings to try and prick TOM's conscience. A bit like trying to kill an elephant with a pea shooter
Was that the Candy Apple Red Jazz 'issue' ???
  3.
Lookey here then http://www.fender.co...rtno=0253900541
Exactly, its a reissue colour, not an 'original' fender colour that was of the period of this bass, or any preceeding basses or instruments.
  4.
That's very interesting. I stand corrected. It's a great looking bass right now - whatever it looked like in the past. I did think it was Vintage White - as that's what mine is.
I've never heard of 'Vintage White' being a colour?? Apart from people describing reissue colours as such? Lovely looking bass Gareth, surprised it's still available, sign of the times i guess!
  5. Bump for a friend!
  6.
11 years off them but still love the smell of standing beside someone with a fag. My mother in law still smokes and does it on top of my kids it drives me insane so we just don't go there much.
I hate people who smoke inside when theres kids around, absolutely no need for it whatsoever, often they're the same people (No reference to your mother-in-law here! ) who swear constantly when there's kids around too. I smoke, and swear, but i'm intellectually aware enough to change my behaviours to suit the occasion/environment, even if I'm stupid enough to still smoke......if that makes sense?!
  7.
my brand new oversized les paul goldtop
Love the Goldtop, very nice!!
  8.
Makes me laugh that you pay more for the worn "used" look than the new, pristine version: a matter of an additional £400 or abouts. That being said, I did enjoy the red RW Precision I played in Liverpool's Dolphin music before they moved out. It may sound stupid but it does genuinely feel that the worn in feel adds to the tone. The worn neck feels like the one from your trusty P/J bass you've played for 10 years night after night, gig after gig . . . Truly phenomenon but just something I don't see me paying full price for.
In my experience, simply sanding down the back of the neck to take the gloss off, and then rolling the fingerboard edges makes any bass 'feel' worn in. I hate glossy necks.
  9.
Access to your detailed and verifiable evidence for this phenomenon would be appreciated.
Prior to the smoking ban, an average of 0.7 public houses closed in the UK every month, following the ban, an average of 3.6 have closed. Google it. I havent, but my landlord was only telling me this at Christmas, and i have no reason to doubt him. No doubt the anti-smoking brigade will attach lots of scientific data to disprove this. For what its worth, i fully approve the smoking ban, and every price hike at every budget, despite being a smoker myself, its a horrible habit, that i would go to great lenghts to discourage anyone from starting. Sadly, my willpower is virtually non-existent.
  10. Jeez, it's bad enough that my GP tell's me my athletes foot/genital warts/ingrowing toe nail/short sightedness and hairy chest is caused by my smoking, now people are not buying guitars because of it!!! I've heard it all now!!!!! I must say, I've never smelt tobacco on any guitar, especially mine, the majority of which are 40/50 years old. Personally i never smoke in the house, although i'm sure that wouldn't make any difference.
  11. This is a starter set for a Bass Player. A colleague of mine, huge Jack Bruce fan, started to learn the bass about 4 years ago, after general conversations of all things bass with me. Anyway, he was pursuaded to buy the gear, and despite my encouragement, he never quite had time, or enough desire to actually start playing it. All this kit is brand new (4 years old...ish), and unplayed. Squier Jazz bass, made in China. Bright red ala CAR. Plays nicegood responsive pickups and tone control, great value. Trace Elliott Boxer 65 combo, green carpet model. I owned an identical amp for years, and its a fantastic home, practice amp, I loved it. Hercules, grab stand. Bass cost £199 TE Combo was £169 Stand was/is £30 Total cost £400 He's looking for £[s]250[/s] £200 which for a 'new' set is [s]pretty good[/s] excellent value. He was going to advertise it on eBay, but i asked if i could give it a go on here first, as I thought it may do someone a good turn, its a great value beginners/spare set up. He doesnt really want hassle of shipping (Not for that value anyway), and would prefer cash on collection from his home in Kettering (Northants) If anyones interested, reply to this, or PM me with contact details, and i'll pass on the details (I see him everyday) Here's the all important pics; Cheers
  12.
someone on here has two....
That's just being greedy!! Are they yours?
  13.
Thanks for your comments, very much appreciated. and i'm glad you're all enjoying the bass. But I don't think it was shipped any earlier than very late 1967. These were certainly shipping into 1967 with the non intonatable bridge (see Gibson bass bridges), but it would also have had the wider of the two metal humbucker covers (see Gibson bass pickups). The hardware definately says later. It is possible that this neck was made and stamped a few years earlier, and sat in the factory for a few years before being shipped - Gibson did funny things like that at times. I haven't taken the pots out to check the codes, but i'm pretty sure they will say late 1967, or even early 1968. Have a look at my 1967 Rivoli that isn't for sale http://www.flyguitar...phoneRivoli.php - pot codes on that are just past the middle of '67. If this is an issue to anyone we can go into a whole lot more detail, or I can show more photos, even check the pot codes.
I'll bow to your far superior knowledge, as i'm not big on Epiphones. Serial number check does say '66 though on 3 different sites. I also thought the 2 -pickup version came in, in late '66, and also the slot head tuners were replaced by philips in '66. To be fair though, I'm probably basing this more on the Gibson EB2 vintage, and not Epiphones. I would suggest any buyers should disregard my comments, as they may well be incorrect from what the seller has said, or, as i'd always recommend, do plenty of your own research. Good luck with the sale though, its a lovely looking bass, i think the refin on the front of the body is probably the best i've seen on one of these.
  14. I'd get some frets fitted, it'll sound like a proper bass then!
  15.
I only wanna say thank you, have a happy new year, and hope having a good time with all of u.
Hola Diego, Como estas? Feliz Ano Nuevo, y bienvenido a Basschat. Hasta luego amigo. Rick
  16. I played one of these a few years back (Sunburst version), and it was lovely, really warm DB....ish sound. Not sure how many they made, but you hardly ever see them about. Very cheap shipping!! Does anyone on here have one? 17.
Damn Ive just aged by 2 years
Could even be a late '65!!! Doh!
  18.
Alternatively, it's been properly looked after rather than being carried around in a bin-bag and used to hammer tent pegs in. The blowtorch-and-sander "professional" relickers should be forced to take a good hard look at what a 50 year old bass can look like.
+1 Indeed.
  19. From the features, and serial number, i think this is a '66? Great looking body refin!!! Nice.
  20.
Who says that??? Valves should last YEARS of regular use, and decades of occasional use! Also, they were built a lot better in the 50s...
Absolutely, I've never heard anyone suggest valves should be changed regularly. I've had mine in my tweed bassman for 12 years and they're good as new.!!
