1. Ok, maybe I should clarify my use of the word beginner! I have in fact, been playing in a moderately successful covers band for a couple of years, however, as stated, I have never used anything other than tabs, and when they were obviously wrong, slowly worked it out for myself. I am a beginner in terms of reading notes and the fret board, I started to learn to play Bass, well, at least try to play, three years ago, at the ripe old age of 57, and, having a very mild, but incurable disease of a part of my brain, I do find it hard to concentrate at times, hence the plea for help. Thanks all, Ray
2. Good evening all, I am hoping someone can assist me. I have not been playing long, and so far, have got by using tab, I can’t read music, and until last week, did not even need to know the fretboard notes.(yeh, I know, but it suited me!). However, having got together with some really good musicians, and actually will be doing some recording, our keys man decided it would be a good idea to send me the bass notes for I can’t fight this feeling anymore, (REO Speedwagon) rather than me try to find tab, especially as we are playing it in the key of D. So far so good, it made me look for the notes he sent, on the fretboard, rather than just looking at tab and deciding where to put my fingers! Its helping me no end. However, once I started to play it, ( resting for intro and first verse, coming in at first pre chorus, ) I discover that he has only sent the notes up to the chorus, leaving out the guitar solo, 2[sup]nd[/sup] verse, which I think is different to 1[sup]st[/sup] verse, 2[sup]nd[/sup] pre chorus, again, different to first, and end part! I am sure this is easy for most of you, and you are having a good giggle, however, I really do need the notes (or even tab) for this in D. By the way, others on hols till next week, when I go on my hols! I would like to try to learn most of this before I go. I also realise this is not a difficult song, for most, but the timing is a bit more difficult to get for a beginner. Thanks in advance for any assistance you can give. Cheers guys Ray
3. Ok thanks guys, we too, have around 70+ songs, and rotate to suit venue, but we also seem lately, to be obsessed with learning at least 3-5 new songs every week, and dropping ones we already know. Refreshing the setlist and adding new songs I can understand, but it is a constant learning curve, though I guess thats not a bad thing eh?
4. Guys, The band I play in, are forever wanting to change/add to the setlist.(every 2-3 gigs). Just got me thinking, how often does your band change its setlist??
5. I have a Fender Jazz active, Fender jazz passive, Jazz copy, Fender jazz fretless, Epiphone vio bass, and old bass of unknown origin, and a Tanglewood acoustic. The idea is, I have a bass for all occasions, the reality is, I usually use the passive Jazz, with the odd foray for the active!! so in truth, I just like owning basses!!
6. I first picked up a bass, when asked to play with a newly forming band, consisting of a few mates down the pub, with never any intention of gigging, it was just for a giggle. they had all had some experience of playing, and three of the four had gigged. however, as we were never going to gig, I said I would have a go. Got myself three lessons, just to see what I was meant be doing, and then played with the others. I was bloody awful!! however, I really enjoyed it. less so I must admit, when they told me we would be doing a one off gig, in the local, in 8 weeks!! ok, did the gig, was crap, but very enjoyable. just over 2 years later, we are gigging on a regular basis, and I have just joined a second band, of far more accomplished musicians, who are more than happy with my playing. So playing in two bands, one of a reasonably high standard, my point being, it took me little time to lean the basics, (I will never be brilliant) but, as for the age thing, I will be playing at my own 60th birthday party in June!! never too old to learn guys.
7. Hi mate, I am in Luton, just up the road, snow overnight is now melting, more forecast but you can never be sure how much eh? Overcast at present but not snowing, roads clear
8.
Nah don't know of any rugby club in Gloucester...
err, Gloucester Rugby Club, Kingsholm Stadium Kingsholm Road, Gloucester GL1 3AX 01452 872250 Ah yes, early morning, just seen smiley Creeps out via the back door!!!!
9.
I circumvented the whole dreadful 'covers or not' issue by watching it with the sound off...still good...
there was sound with it????
10.
It still depends on whether or not you're having fun ... https://www.youtube....d&v=IZvpHwoQfqk
Bloody hell!, they could play Mustang Sally, over and over again at a gig, who would notice, or even care lol
11. I have just joined a second band, doing covers, just like the other one, The new band consists of some superb musicians (and me!) and, after much soul searching and deliberation, I have come to the earth shattering conclusion, that the reason we play in covers bands is simple, we love doing it! we are happy doing it, if other prefer originals, then more power to them, enjoy and the best of luck. We all have our own preferences, and to me at least, none should be classed as better or worse.just do what suits you and what you enjoy best! had to keep editing this, bloody letter N on my keyboard keeps sticking!
12. I simply remind the missus about the amount she spends on cigarettes each year, problem solved!
13.
Depends if it fades out on the CD, especially solo-to-fade; listening to how the band that wrote it decided it should end live can be a useful pointer, even if you don't follow it to the note.
Agreed, I also prefer studio version, but the above does make sense, however, when you get into a song, and the drummer is playing something in an entirely different way, and his reasoning is he prefers listening to the live version,it gets annoying, especially as he cannot comprehend the fact that many bands/musicians, 'wing it' or improvise when playing live.
14. Guys, Whenever our band decides to learn a new song, inevitably, we all go off and listen to it, come back next rehersal, play the song, and someone has learned the 'live version' and the rest the studio version. (yes. i know, it should be decided beforehand!!). However, just out of personal interest, what versions of songs do you prefer to learn?
