1.
The Matt Schofield Trio http://www.mattschofield.com/ .
You know, I swear that I can hear a bass during the organ solo in this video of Schofield: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yfi9fKpm3yU Either that or the organist is truly one talented SOB. But yeah, Schofield is a fantastic player who also pulls some really comedy guitar faces. In a similar "bass provided by organ" vein, definitely check out Sugarman 3: http://www.myspace.com/sugarman3
2. +1 for Interparcel, shipped a 1x12" combo amplifier (despite a slightly worrying entry in their Prohibited Items list: Magnetic and Ferromagnetic material). Picked up and delivered when they said. The shipment actually travelled with DHL, so perhaps some credit should go to them? £9 for a 20kg item, £5 insurance up to £250.
3. I use this technique and I play 5 string basses. The muting is certainly useful, but the main reason I wanted to get into it was that I found there was a lag when I switched from finger style to slap because my thumb had to "unanchor". I figured that if my thumb was floating over the strings anyway it would be nearer to the right position to start slapping. That said, I play in a band with a guy who really advocates the anchored thumb style and he has absolutely no problems swapping from finger style to slap, so maybe it's just me.
4. Peg docu: Is it wrong to admit that this the first time I've realised where De La Soul got their sample from for Eye Know? Must get a copy of Aja...
5.
On the other hand they're out of the way of accidental activation...and the ensuing instant, embarrasing silence...
The guitarist in one of the bands I'm in uses an ME50 and has achieved this a few times, causing much hilarity. "Mark, go for a solo!" *stomps* *silence* ... still, you know what they say about guitarists with big feet.
6.
I am sure its more of a "ill play what i want and not advertise anyone" thing rather than a stunt. I imagine warwick and trace payed his lots back in the day to play their gear and he feels he isn't going to promote anyone anymore.
It's the BBC that enforce this, you're only allowed to show the branding on your gear if you've got an endorsement deal (or this is what I seem to remember a friend telling me after he played on the beeb one time - some studio lackey taped over the Roland logos on his keys).
7.
Anything really, i've sent em in boxes i've adapted that had ikea furniture in
Yeah, this is what I usually see/do for ebay stuff. Then mummify the thing in sellotape.
8. I've received guitars in a hard shell case wrapped in a couple of layers of brown paper which were fine. The last guitar I received via Royal Mail was mailed in a gig bag inside a big cardboard box that had been stuffed with balled plastic bags and bubble wrap, with a plank selotaped along the neck/body for extra strength.
9.
Now here's a question.... anyone know who played bass on the original? I do.
If it's as surprising as my discovery that the bassist on the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back" is also the saxophonist in The Crusaders, there's no chance of me guessing!
10. Anyone have a handle on what to play for the fills in Car Wash? For ages I've been playing it up around 10th fret, something like G -10h11p10----------------------------------- D ----------12--------10----10-------------12- A -----------------12----12----12------------- E --------------------------------12b13-10---- But then I was just looking at this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cyFf_QIcWQ And he's getting some good stuff around the 7th fret on the G string. Anyone else have any suggestions?
11. Some mileage can be had by playing the minor blues scale (or even the melodic minor) with the root a fifth away from the dominant 7th chord you're playing over (so if the chord is C7, you play Gm7 blues scale). I seem to recall that Wes Montgomery often worked the other way, so would play major blues scales a 4th away from the written minor 7 chord.
12. Don't over-use effects or flashy techniques. Sure, autowah rocks bells, but use it all the time and it loses impact factor.
13. I've also got an intellitouch one, and it's great. Doesn't cope with the open A, E or B strings on my bass, so usually I tune to the 12th fret harmonic instead. Useful *and* cheap; now there's a rarity. Also allows you to try and convince the drummer that it's a miniature TV so you can watch Eastenders whilst still attending rehearsals.
14. I can help out with some loops, though my software is incredibly naff (Hammerhead; search on this site for me looking for alternatives!) How about some loops that include chord sequences as well? I recorded an incredibly repetitious ii V I track (guitar + drums) ages ago that's nice to practice to. How about some old Real Book tunes as well? Though I'm hazy on where exactly the copyright lies with a lot of that stuff...
This is something I'm really looking forward to. When I first joined the forum I was surprised that the technique and theory section was such a baron wasteland. Perhaps this section will be BCs redemption.
I agree, I wonder how many people stray beyond "The Local". The number of "Moved" threads makes me think that people miss that there are other sections to the site!
15. Interesting, wonder if he's mic'ed and DI'ed or just mic'ed. I guess that's kind of a dumb question, I'm just so used to DI'ing that seeing a mic'ed bass cab surprises me! I also wonder how much Ronson is making off this album, surely all the money goes to the copyright owners, which I guess is the people that wrote the songs?
16. For the past few years I've been using Hammerhead to program loops: http://www.threechords.com/hammerhead/ I'd grab some extra acoustic sample banks to get a more realistic kick drum (unless you're big into electronic music), but other than that it's all good. Oh, it's aimed at dance music, so it's all 4/4. (though obviously you can work around that if you want to).
17. Now I'm started to get tempted by all these good reviews... I've got a stock passive Warwick Fortress 1; what would a pair of wizard pickups do for it? It's difficult to get an idea from reading the Wizard website, so it would be good to hear from someone who's made a similar swap.
18. The jazz funk band I play in (Acuphuncture, the link is in my sig) is looking for gigs, but we're kind of running up again the problem that the local scene is really dominated by pesky indie kids; it's kind of difficult to get gigs with anyone other bands in the local pubs. Most of the local jazz scene is focussed on jam sessions. We're wondering about trying to break into the corporate/wedding circuit, but then we'd have to change what we play; currently we're mixing covers with original tunes, and we really hope to keep playing whatever we want to, rather than have to cater for a wider audience. Not that our music won't get people dancing, we just don't want to play Disco Inferno Does anyone have any advice on how to get gigs, or been in a similar situation?
19.
i forgot about that pedal, i was gassing for that last year is it any good? theres mix reviews on ebs pedals on a whole
I've not owned it for long enough to really comment, I'm still playing with the settings. So far I like it, it was easy to create some interesting/useful sounds, and the one sound I actually wanted from it (a quick bootsy-style "quack") is in there. I haven't taken the back off yet - I hear that there's an internal trim pot that can be fiddled with, but I've no idea what happens if you do. The unit is surprisingly small, which is a bit of a bonus too.
20. I've just acquired an EBS BassIQ; on HiQ you can get some craziness, though it might not be quite as crazy as you require... http://www.ebs.bass.se/2007/bassiq.htm
21. Nice and simple, 99% of the time I turn up to gigs with just a bass, an amp and sufficient cables to make it all work. But maybe it's in reaction to when I play guitar, when I turn up with wah, chorus or phase, footswitches to control the amp, delay, maybe a compressor or overdrive... The phrase "All the gear but no idea" was coined for me
22. Good tunes! Is they from an album I can get my hands on? *fires up amazon in another tab*
23. The Warwick Fortress 1 I've just bought has a great finger spacing - it fits 5 strings in the space that my yahama BBG5 fits 4.
24.
Wow!!! Another Patrick Eggle owner, good man. I have a rather stunning '93 Vienna.
Nice! My Berlin Plus is a slightly less stunning brown-burst (sounds like something that happens after a night on the pop), but plays and sounds fantastic.
