1.
I used to have a Peavey Mk VI head which would run 2 ohms. Built like a tank and as reliable as gravity. For £400 there won't be much to choose from though.
You'd be surprised what £400 can buy you with all the rush to go lightweight! Orange terror and Hartke LH500 can be brand new for less than that. Last ABM900 I saw here was significantly cheaper again. Peavey is a good call, by the way!
  2.
Don't EBS run to 2 ohm? Then there's Ashdown. Some of their amps are 2x4ohm channels (though keep a fire extinguisher handy).
Also a good call on EBS, but I'd be interested to know if you're speaking from experience with regards Ashdown or just perpetuating a myth? I've had nothing but good experiences with my ABM.
  3.
It is much more than your budget, but the only amp I have used that runs at 2Ω is a Vanderkley Aurora.
Err yes, much more than my budget...
Hartke LH1000 will give you a massive bang for your buck and can drive two 4 ohm cabs as long as you can get on with the fender style tone stack EQ.
Good call! One to add to the list!
The Mesa Boogie D800 and several of the TC amps will go to 2 ohms.
D800 is over budget, TC Blacksmith will do 2 ohms but again over budget.
Have just re-read and yes, you already know! Apologies for the condescendingness!
No apology required!
  4. Purely speculative at this point, but if I wanted to add a second 4 ohm Barefaced retro 2x10, what amps are out there that could handle it? I know I could run the cabs in series for 8 ohms and ANY amp could handle it, but i need real welly here! Talking 500 watts and above. My fav amp of all time is the pre-EVO Ashdown ABM so top of my list of possibilities is the ABM900. Second favorite amp is the Orange Terror Bass, which I've owned twice, and it could handle the cabs in series for 500 watts at 8 ohms (there's also the rarer 1000 watt version that would do 900 watts at 8ohms). Can anyone suggest anything else? Budget would be under £400, new or used - I know Thomann still have some Orange TB500s in stock.
  5.
I was born in 78, so a YOB would probably be a musicman, but I don't tend to play 4 string basses anymore either. I don't think there were many 5 strings, in a modern layout by 1978.
If you'd consider a 4 string I would highly recommend a nice Ibanez Musician, particularly the MC800. I had the loan of one recently and it sounded fantastic.
  6. '77 here... And I'm sorted with Beedster's old Yamaha Pulser!
Yup, I understand that! Brilliant! Thank you!
And a veroboard layout has pretty much been done for me! http://www.sabrotone.com/?p=3173 Just remove the noise making circuitry from the schematic, adjust cap and pot (and series resistor!) values around the 2 filter stages, and change up the last opamp stage to incorporate a volume control to the design and it's done. Should fit in a 1590b no problem.
  8. I think perhaps that has been copied and pasted from one of the Orange valve amp manuals. I've yet to see a modern solid state (or hybrid) amp that couldn't be run without a load.
  9.
Tort for sure, gold would be better if it was a 2 colour burst.
I thought these only came in 2-tone burst?
  10. GUYS! RHETORICAL QUESTION!!!
  11. I've wanted one of these for a while. Maybe next year... Is 3 precisions too many?
  12.
Not used it but AFAIK it goes after the preamp but before the cab sim / DI / headphone, as you would expect. No aux in which is a major bummer so I still need my PJB Bighead with it for that. Also the cab sim is on the DI/headphone out only (switchable), it sounds too dark to me though and has me looking at other cab sims.
Very odd omission... And strange that the speaker sim isn't more impressive given the pedigree!
  13. Danny what way does the effects loop work? Is it pre-preamp? Any way to run an aux-in into the thing to use the headphone out for practice? Hard to decipher their website on a smartphone...
  14. Looks like a corking amp!

Couldn't hold out any longer. Ginger kit ordered from Germany! And an enclosure for the h+lpf. Is there anywhere in the UK that does pre-drilled 1590B enclosures? Hate drilling!!!

Unlikely, although the switch could be a dud. Stranger things have happened. Have you tried directly wiring the input and output jacks to the pcb without the switch? Speaking from experience, boxing up a pcb before checking it is often optimistic!

Sounds like a wiring problem around the 3PDT footswitch. Should be passing signal on bypass.
i used Musikding yes, great prices :-) I do think i might have bitten to much off doing the Ginger as a first build project though :-( I have power etc (Led, switch n jacks work) but all i get is horrid static sounds? volume and gain work but no sounds ,just static buzz?. ive checked the components to the list/diagram i have and solder joints ......... all appear good (to me that is)?? doing my nut in a bit tbh ...........any ideas, anyone done the ginger? cheers
The Ginger is a serious build for a first attempt! As mentioned it could be any one of a hundred things. Unfortunately remotely debugging something like this is extremely tricky. I'm planning building of these myself when I've finished my 3BOD build... And after payday! By the way danbowskill, is that a 125B or 1590B enclosure?
  19. Bump. Would take an ms60b, an interesting drive pedal or a pedaltrain of some description (or WHY) as full or partial trade.
  20. Err... That's a mini, not a junior...
  21. I think they have a new album out. Saw a review of it somewhere the other day...
IIRC that gives a 12dB/octave rolloff for both HPF and LPF - you can simply cascade two identical filters to give a 24dB/octave roll-off which might be better, at least for the HPF if you're looking at thump elimination.
Yup, there's a thumpinator right there! The filter responses for that circuit aren't ideal, but close enough for the purpose.
