1. Crate bass combo. Truly awful. Not even much use as a crate. Closely followed by a Laney bass head.
2. You won't find a better 4x10 than a Barefaced 2x12 in my opinion, they are a bit expensive, but well worth it, and arguably better than any 2x12s on the market! I was very skeptical, as I've used nothing but 4x10s for many years. But I can honestly say I currently own the best cab I've ever had. Have a read on the Barefaced website about why a 2x12 works better than a 4x10. You read that right by the way, 1200W, a one hand lift, fits in the boot of a polo with the seats up!
3. Yeah I agree with Bod2 on this, I've tried all sorts, including very expensive paper-in-oil type. honestly, it doesn't make much difference, especially on bass, as long as you use good quality components of the right value the end result will be pretty similar to most peoples ears. Sure you can see the difference on a scope, but lets face it, in the mix of a band it won't make the slightest bit of difference. However, if you feel like you will play better for knowing you have the absolute best capacitor fro the job in there, I'd go paper in snake oil...
4. You could try Peavey UK. I got an inductor for my old Peavey Combo (the forerunner to the TNT - that should give yo an idea of its age). Well, it took them around 18 months, but they found one and sent it to me! I'm sure they will be able to supply the same pots as the original, or at least tell you what type, and then its just a case of replacing whats there...
5.
They're not, I had a plate made for my rockinbetter, to the size of a real Ric one, and I had to cut a bit off to make it fit. it says Rickenbastard by the way. Jon (Bassassin) made it for me before he stopped hanging around here. There are people out there who can make them for you, ask around, Oh, and I painted my Pickguard black rather than go through all the crap of trying to find a new one that fitted. I would suggest you do a tracing of the old one, and give it to Bass Doc, he can probably sort you out.
Cheers Dave, I'll give Bass Doc a holler, although I don't think he's been around too much lately either....
6.
Thanks for the feedback. How do I go about introducting myself on this forum - any help appreciated as I'm 65 years old now and getting a bit 'dittery' !
Hi Brian, if you go to the main page and look for the introductions sub-forum, you can say "Hi" there but you're 11 posts in now so I reckon you're getting the hang of it. We're a friendly bunch on here really, some more sarcastic than others, but don't take it personally
7. Oh don't get me started on this one. I work with people who turn their phones off until they need to make a call. Then when they ring me it's "oh hang on my phone just beeped... oh its 10 messages from you asking if i can do a gig. I'll get back to you"
8. Does it latch when the scratchplate is removed? It might need turning around slightly as its making contact with the side of the cavity or something?
9. Black, its the new black Plus it looks great with a maple board. Nice looking bass btw
10. It's unacceptable in my view. Whenever I sell something it is an immediate priority to get the goods to the buyer, basically at the point i receive the payment the item belongs to them and it is my duty to ensure the goods are with them as soon as possible, and that they are fully kept in the loop as to when it will be picked up from me and delivered to them - I expect the same courtesy when buying. I would have been on to Paypal way before now, if you get the refund and the seller kicks off about it, then you can always re-send payment, but the fact that you have waited and still have no idea if/when you'll receive the goods is totally unacceptable.
11. To be honest, ours IS for paid work straight away, and not bad pay at that. And still we're having the same grief!

13.
Edit: @brensabre79 - I was going to say I find your profile pic disturbing, but I'm not really in a position to criticise it.
Yeah it is a bit, but yours freaks me out!! Its like that Godley and Creme video from the 80s played superfast underwater! @thunderider: Step away from the Crate... Its the American Laney of bass amps, if not worse (I used to have a Laney too)
14. There's loads of guitarists around, that's why many bands have two! It sounds like your guitarist is in a pretty comfortable place right now for gigs - with you, keyboardist and sometimes singer as his 'backup' band. I would have a chat with the drummer, see where his loyalties are. You might be better getting a new guitarist but you might find that this results in you needing a new drummer too - and they are hard to find! in my experience democratic bands don't work, as there's always someone who wants to be in charge but isn't prepared to put any effort in AND someone who does all the crappy jobs nobody wants to do and gets miffed a lot. I'm not sure who runs things for your band, if its a democracy, then you need to play the politics game, find out where everyone stands and judge whether or not to take action. If there is a band leader, this is much less political. Basically its up to them, air your views to them and let them decide what to do with it - you might be out of a job though...
15. I have the combo version of this at the practice room - the amp section at the top being exactly the same as the above. I can quite honestly say it is the worst amp that I have ever had the misfortune to use. However, it cost me £20 delivered, and the Peavey Combo that cost £50 is easily 3 or 4 times better. So now the Crate is used by the keyboard player. One quality it has in particular is that although the sound is dull, it can produce an amazing amount of treble for a single tweeterless 15" driver in the form of hiss. Turning it on takes me back to a time when I was constantly told to be quiet by teachers in school. "Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" if you listen carefully you can hear the bass... In summary, I think they are the most accurately named amplifiers you will ever find.
16. Its probably the bed and the smaller room dimensions that is helping it sound tighter in the bedroom. big open space with hard surfaces = bass for bass! If you're not prepared to carpet the lounge and hang some thick velvet drapes and flock wallpaper, the either headphones or move back to the spare room, but repurpose it... After much negotiation with Mrs Sabre79 she finally bowed to the logic of commom sense - at the price of a small amount of convenience for our sparodic overnight visitors. I converted the spare room into a studio and we bought a very nice sofabed for the lounge. Now those guests who come once a year to visit can sleep in the lounge, and the spare room gets used every day. The added bonus is that guests rarely outstay their welcome as the cat gets bitey in the night if he can't sleep on the sofa, so I can get back to my studio making music
17. Going through the same thing at the moment mate. I feel your pain! <rant>We auditioned 4 the other week, 3 of which were a complete waste of time. So with a gig looming we plucked for the 4th, who wasn't bad. Gave him the set list, a spotify playlist, told him to learn them all, guitarist went through every song. Turns up to the gig and he hadn't even looked at the second set. Or the first set. I've never worked so hard trying to get eye contact to cue the bugger, counting him in for every song. Needless to say, looking again. There seems to be an incredible number of complete numpties out there who think that if they can tap their fingers almost in time to a tune then they would be a good drummer and are qualified to answer an ad for "Experienced drummer, reader preferred with own gear and transport". Out of 15 replies to the ad, the 4 we auditioned met 2 out of the 4 criteria, the rest didn't even get that far!</rant>
18. I'm not sure the copies are that accuate. I have a Tokai one, the plate on it is a bit rough looking and I don't think its anything like the original plate. Also I cannot find anywhere that will do a truss rod cover
19. Dubious mods are fairly commonplace on a bass of this age. Lots of people put out-of-phase mods in as well as series/parallel around this time. It is extremely hard to find a decal with a serial number like that, most of the knock off ones don't have a serial. The build quality in terms of decal placement, bridge cover position etc. looks consistent for the period too... however, I can't tell if its genuine or not.
20.
Some good info here: http://basschat.co.u...reble-bleed-mod
Yes I think that's the one I read originally! Great mod for a passive bass IMO.
21. wow there's a blast from the past! My dad had an Ohm combo, it weighed a ton and then some, great sounding bit of kit though. I seem to remember his always made a rather loud thud when powering up/down. I think that part is fairly normal for an amp of this type/vintage. The crackles though... I think icastle has it spot on. If those checks don't work, take it to be looked at, these amps are from an era when stuff was designed to be repaired, not replaced. You might find its just an aged connection, or indeed the jack socket. But I would also reiterate, its not good practice to turn the amp on/off without a speaker connected. Its a surefire way to shorten the life of the amp!
22. Or could it be that with the B9.1s now selling for under £100 in GAK that Zoom are planning to announce a new, more expensive unit with 6 stompboxes instead of 3? I love my B3 but when I use it alone two of my 3 patches are compressor and preamp, leaving me only one slot free. its not easy to switch between patches either so I would welcome a version with more slots, although 6 might be overkill!
23. If its badly seasoned wood, or mismatched, it is an inherent fault with the manufacture. That is to say the fault existed before the symptoms were obvious, and before the warranty expired. As a result Warwick SHOULD replace the neck for you - they may choose not to, and I think a lot of people on here would be surprised if they did, but before you go buying a neck off eBay you should definitely speak to Warwick first and find out where you stand.
24.
Thanks all for your input; some interesting and useful comments and opinions; thanks for taking the time. Truth is, I love the feel of the (new to me) long scale option and I can't see me going back to a short scale, despite the Gibson SG being a very fine instrument. Onwards and upwards!! Cheers..........Brian PS. Gibson SG bass for sale...
Don't Gibson do a long scale version of the SG Bass? Or is it just Epiphone?
