  2. Are we all absolutely sure that the fan speed actually varies according to temperature in the HA series? I've had three of them as I said before, and have always believed the fan speed to be constant... still do!
  3. I had a HA2000, sold it on, realised I missed it and bought another, then followed that up with a HA5500 for good measure. All three sounded like A/C units straight out of the box! Edit: Also had two LH1000s pass through my hands, come to think about it, and they weren't in any way quiet either.
  4. I'm actually just putting my slightly old school Peavey based home practice rig together at the moment; a 'TB Raxx' preamp into a 'Classic Series 60' power amp into my Eden 112EX. Put it together for the first time this evening and it sounds absolutely great.
  5. If it sounds fine out front, get yourself out front :-) Granted you need either wireless or a fair length of cable, but the latter ain't expensive and the audience will just enjoy the showmanship!
  6. About time this had a bump... If anybody would be interested but require it to be posted (expect it to cost at least £30ish) rather than collecting from me, then give me a shout and I'll see if I can pack it up.
  7. I've been happy with my rehearsal rig for quite a long time now; a Hartke HA series head and an Ashdown ABM 410t cab. Absolutely cracking rig, but not so expensive, desirable or easily nickable that I worry unduly about leaving it in storage at our rehearsal studios. The head used to be the HA2000 but got upgraded to the HA5500 (which is exactly the same, just bigger bunches), whilst the cab is nothing to set the world alight, but I've played it in for so many hours that it's at that 'old friend' stage now, and with the 5500 is capable of effortlessly being quite unreasonably loud. I'd be completely happy to use it live if I had to, but it's just so bulky and heavy compared to other stuff I've bought since that I'm happier to leave it where it is!

    I know it's not strictly a bass pedal, but their TO800 'Vintage Tube Overdrive' is a brilliant Ibanez TS808 clone. I've had them side by side, and as part of a live setup, you wouldn't know the difference. Well.. until you came down too hard on it and broke it, that is

  11. "Gorilla Tape" is pretty damn activist in its approach to sticking stuff down. Expensive, and I've only ever found it in smallish rolls, but it's good.

    I can vouch for the Ashdown ABM410t paired with the Terror Bass. Bit of vintage warmth to the tone, but with stainless rounds on my precision, it's certainly not lacking clarity.

  14. I'd go with GAK - that's who your warranty is with. They'll sort out the dodgy one with Hartke, and you just get a new one. If it was out of warranty and you were looking for a free repair or other goodwill gesture, then I'd talk direct to Hartke. Of course, if GAK give you any problems (not that I believe they would), then you've always got Hartke to fall back on.
  15. I had problems with an LH1000 that I bought when they first came out. It popped, clicked, hissed and whistled to itself without so much as a cable plugged in. Everything under the bonnet looked fine, and changing the tube made no difference to it. So yeah, even Hartke can go wrong I'd get the top off and check for any blown glass fuses that might be in there, and any signs of loose or damaged components / wires etc. but if nothing's obvious, just send it back and try another one. Or, if it's under warranty, miss out the first bit and just get it swapped!
  16. All my racks start with a decent power conditioner; keeps everything tidy and protects your investment. After that, I'd use your remaining 1U for a good compressor or wireless (as already suggested) or a decent DI like an RBI etc. so that if your rig ever went down, you'd have an instant backup through the PA.

  18. Hi all, Up for sale here is my SWR Workingman's 4004. Bought back in 2006, it's a 400W into 4Ω, solid state and heat-sink cooled head. It's done a fair few gigs and has always been pleasingly loud and completely reliable, but my back prefers the smaller and lighter gear available these days, so this head got consigned to the cupboard a couple of years ago. I always kept hold of it because it was handy for acoustic gigs where the cooling fans on my Hartke would be irritating, but my LMII takes care of those duties now, so it's time I had the cupboard space back! As you can see from the photos, it's in great condition and even still has its original blank for the 1U space in the sleeve. I screwed heavy duty rubber feet onto the bottom and a cable retainer round the back, but those (easily removable) mods aside, it's factory spec. The included mains cable is a Y-splitter type, which means there's power available for whatever you may choose to put in the rack space (I kept a Korg tuner in there, myself). Looking for £150 firm, and the amp must be collected from my rehearsal space in Sheffield as I really don't want to have to try and pack something of this size, shape and weight for postage. [/quote] I picked one of those (Horizon 600) up fairly cheap on fleabay last week, and whilst the intention wasn't to use it as part of my bass rig, I checked it out to make sure it was working by using it as my rig at rehearsal. It sounded pretty good with my SansAmp BDDI in front and my Ashdown ABM410t at the business end, but as much as I don't want to fall into descriptions like "quiet watts" etc, the Horizon running 600W bridged into 8ohms sounded significantly more timid than my usual Hartke HA5500 running 350W into the same 8ohms. If I was planning on using one as my rig in a loud band, I think I'd be tempted to play it safe and get one of the higher powered models.

Our drummer recently buggered off and joined an emo band (I'm sure it happens all the time!), so we just broke out the acoustic guitars, had a re-think of the originals, threw in some new covers and decided we could do without him fine for a while! I used to play bass for an acoustic singer-songwriter friend of mine, so I already knew how to 'fill in' for a drummer, but if you know your drummer's going to be missing a rehearsal, give it a go - you might be surprised what you could come up with, even if all you do is hold in reserve for that unexpected absence. If you wanna try it out on an audience but without any pressure, take it to an open mic jam night and see how it goes down... To be honest, though, if I was in the enviable position of charging over a tenner for a ticket, I'd burn a few of 'em on either getting into a studio and having a setsworth of the drums down as a quality 'backing track' to put through the PA, or on buying a drum machine which could be programmed up for such emergencies. Throw a black cloth over the house/support band's kit, explain your predicament (once) and unapologetically get on with it!
