No-one's going to give me approx £150 for an Epiphone EB-0 no matter what parts I've put on it, so I'm going to have to break it up. I know it's butchery, but it's also economics. I've got some other stuff too. I need to realise some of the value scattered around the spares box. Let us begin. bridges [s]Hipshot Supertone bridge (chrome) - SOLD[/s] 2 saddle Squier Bronco bridge (chrome) - might fit old Fender Musicmaster - £10 pickups [s]DiMarzio Model One pickup - SOLD[/s] 2 jazz style pickups from a Peavey Milestone 3 - £10 2 generic soapbar pickups from a 6 string bass - £10 2 early Hagstrom H-IIB pickups (round ends, pickup rings, springs but no screws) - £30 bodies/necks [s]Epiphone EB-0 body with electronics (except pickup) and pickguard (cherry red, mahogany) - SOLD[/s] [s]Epiphone EB-0 neck (cherry red, mahogany) - SOLD[/s] Peavey Milestone 3 neck (maple/rosewood, J width, some small dings) - £10 [s]AXL Player Deluxe neck (maple/rosewood, P width, good condition) - SOLD[/s] Hagstrom H-IIB body (not original finish, dark brown varnish, mmm!) - £30 Hagstrom H-IIB neck (refinished, no nut) - £30 [s]Unused unbranded 5 string neck (24 fret, 1.75"/44.5mm at the nut, 68mm at the heel) - SOLD[/s] tuners [s]Schaller BMFL tuners (chrome, 4 in line) - SOLD[/s] Set of generic open gear tuners (chrome, 1/2" posts, 11/16" bushings, elephant ears, 3 + 1) - £10 Set of generic open gear tuners (chrome, 1/2" posts, 11/16" bushings, elephant ears, 2 a side) - £10 misc Hagstrom H-IIB control plate -£20 Postage is to be added to all these prices. Bank transfer is preferred, but I can take Paypal if you don't like doing that. I'll get going on some pics/more info tomorrow and add anything else I can think of. PM me if you're interested in any of these items. [s]I'd also like to rather cheekily add that I have a Sony PSP + 2 games + 1GB memory stick + all the usual goodies for sale.[/s]
It's mad giving bar staff ear-plugs. They have enough trouble hearing customers in a packed pub anyway, without someone sticking a foam plug in their ears to make life more difficult. They can't all lip read. The simplest answer is to rotate the staff, so that they get a comfort/noise break, perhaps every hour and go to a quiet place in the building for 10-15 minutes and or go and do other work elsewhere in the pub. Balcro.
I can only speak for myself here but I have worked behind a bar in a live music venue with earplugs in and had little trouble hearing customers. It's no more difficult with plugs in as it is with them out - the attenuation applied by the plugs applies universally, you hear everything the same as you would, only quieter. The customer's voice is drowned out to the same degree by the music with or without plugs. You still have to lean over the bar and cup your hand to your ear. You may well have a different experience from your times behind a bar and I respect that, but I don't take kindly to a blanket declaration of something being "mad" when I for one have found it beneficial and have the experience which backs that up.
Might make it tricky to take orders from customers.
Not at all, it's surprisingly effective. They have to shout to hear themselves over the music anyway and you can hear them perfectly well as a result. A combination of that, lipreading and pointing at beer taps gets you there with little or no bother.

Surely it would be easier just to supply the bar staff with the appropriate PPE for the job - earplugs. No-one stops people extracting oil and gas because it's a wee bit dangerous - they're working with pressurised flammable materials, quite a few bone-crunching metres above a freezing cold sea which would probably kill them in minutes. Of course, you should be wearing earplugs if you're going to a live music venue - punter, worker or performer...

Well, here's a pic of me planning out the template for routing out.
that sounds easiest ...what filler should be used in the neck to guarantee a good grip if the new holes are marginally different? is dowelling a better option
Yes, I use 3 and 4mm hardwood dowel for filling pickguard and neck screw holes respectively. Drill them out to the appropriate size up and glue in the dowel. Cut/sand flush and redrill.

Fill and redrill

Best way is to measure from the nut to the 12th fret then double it. Bridge saddles are moved to compensate for intonation.
-
Body and neck sanded down to 80 grit, all previous finish removed. Looks like I'll have to refret the neck though, on a few of the frets the crown has broken away from the tang and cannot be hammered down. Oh well, a new skill to try and master!

It's amazing how much of a shot in the arm a good rehearsal is, when the songs come together and everyone's on the money.
Just some words of encouragement , good to see you having a go at this and learning as you go along. There is only one way to master this art and that is to do it.
Thanks mannie, I sometimes I get the feeling that this whole finishing off other people's aborted (and half messed up) projects is a whole different game from building from scratch. More cunning required.

Quick update - spent an hour with the mouse on the neck and body. The neck is now slightly asymmetric in profile and sanded all over apart from some fiddly bits around the volute which will have to be done by hand, and the body back and front is now (mostly) devoid of existing finish. No point in pics, unless you want to see the difference between where I sanded and where I didn't

Replace the standard string tree with one of the Hipshot string retainers? Like this, but ignore the G string:
-
Personally, I've never found any difference with bridges; the standard bridge does the job well.
You've never swapped a Gibson 3 point bridge for a Hipshot Supertone then

Mostly online (eBay, here, Stringbusters, Axesrus, WD, Allparts), because the two shops here try to be all things to all men and that means bass gets squeezed into a tiny dusty corner of the shop. Have been known to buy strings locally and that's about it. Yada yada support your local shop and all that but what if they don't really support me? I'm always so underwhelmed when I go in that I rarely do so, and to be honest apart from the occasional "must buy strings now" moment (which can be alleviated by having a spare set in advance), I probably wouldn't miss the shops if they disappeared.

Jules bought my Epiphone EB-3, paid promptly and kept in touch throughout. Nice and easy transaction.

Just received my book, nice and easy with good communication, just how it should be.
I have 3 basses, one of which I use all the time, one which is half built and one which was my #1 for fifteen years but needs TLC. Like any of us, I would spend all of my disposable income (which ain't much!) on more basses/amps/cabs/effects. However, we've just booked our wedding day for next year. Even if we're really careful it'll cost us 10 grand FOR ONE DAY! And no matter how careful we start out, it won't be long before she tells me that she MUST have a chocolate fountain, cos her best mate had one at her wedding. So we need to start saving. She's just told me she will spend the 500 quid I need to finish off the half built one, then every penny after that goes to the wedding. Should I still marry her!?
Our wedding only cost us about 3 grand. You're not being careful enough
I DID join a band but sadly we actually disbanded 2 days ago due to not being able to find ANY members! I've got a couple of bands that i'm gonna audition for but i doubt i'll get in, i'm not really the most amazing singer in the world.
It's the "I'm not good enough" attitude that's the problem. Life has many ingenious ways of kicking you in the balls, no need for you to help it with unnecessary self-deprecation
-
Yeah okay i get what you mean. That's pretty good stuff. I'd really like to be a pro musician but i don't think i'll ever manage to get in a band and i'm certainly not good enough to be a hired musician.
You say that, but you'd be wrong. I used to think that. Then I joined a band. Who knows where it will lead?

Excellent, more Scottish representation. Welcome to the forum
