The only thing Gibson about that is the pickups. It's a Guild bridge, I'm guessing. All built on some butchered set neck thing - looks like a ground down Guild headstock as well. But basically, what a load of bull.
2.
hey up guys and gals. So a band that i loved when i was growing, then hated turning into an adult and just getting back into now, has a pretty sweet bass tone which i never noticed before! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCUSzSProPw So the gear used was an original Gibson grabber, and a Ampeg SVT Special anniversary head, tuned drop C. I was wondering if anyone knew if the bass sounds more like the all Maple version or the alder version? I know maple is traditionally brighter and the tone seems pretty bright to me, if i bought an alder one would it produce a similar tone? Is the Sliding pickup a Single coil? How powerful is the output of the bass? (Could it be compared to an active bass? I dont want to have to keep adjusting levels majorly in live shows when switching) How would you rate the Grabber II reissues compared to the originals? Is it worth paying the extra cost for a new one compared to the older models? Do they even sound alike? I have the cash to buy a pre-owned one in exactly 3 weeks time (Student loan), whats the going rate for one? I did see one mint example go for ~£450 on ebay a week ago, but is this the normal kinda price? Above all, does anyone gig with theirs constantly, can you get the tone like the one in the link above reasonably easily? My current rig setup is. Ampeg SVT-IIP preamp or a Trace Elliot SMX Pre-amp. Crown XS-700 (1900 watts mono bridged) Barefaced 2x15 with tweeter.
I think I can safely say "gawd knows" on the wood vs. sound front. I think a lot of it is scientific nit picking to be perfectly honest and people convincing themselves that they can hear things. If you want to take it to a microscopic level, no two basses made of the same species of wood will sound exactly the same, wood not being a consistent medium. Johnny Punter isn't going to know a damn thing, that's for sure. The pickup is a humbucker. I doubt it will compete with an active bass. In my opinion the Grabber II is an abomination. It's made differently (set neck instead of the bolt on original), it's got the wrong bridge (the originals were a through body Fender style thing, this imposter has a top loaded 3 point bridge), and it totally goes against the point of the Grabber in that it has gone from being Gibson's cheapest bass du jour to one of the most expensive (for the least return). In terms of RRP, only the recently reissued Ripper II outprices it. I don't mind little modern improvements being made here and there in a reissue (the Ripper reissue is a little more authentic in this respect), but the Grabber II takes it far too far and completely misses the point. I played a Grabber alongside the G-3 and I have to say I wasn't blown away by the Grabber. Fair enough if you're trying to replicate something specific, but the G-3 was far and away the better sounding of the 2 less expensive basses Gibson issued at the time (and if I may say something else controversial, better than the Ripper as well).

7. Welcome to the forum There's a Wanted forum a bit further down the main page, you might have more luck in there.

9. If I can make it to Moffat from Aberdeen, then I'm sure I could put in an appearance in Dundee/Perth

11.
--------------------------- Hi evilLordJuju and all contributors to this topic, Having recently bought a Gibson SG Bass I went about changing the strings, altering the action and adjusting the intonation, it's doable but sure isn’t easy with the Gibson 3 point bridge  . Having read this post and followed the treads I've placed an order for a Hipshot 3 point replacement bridge from the U.S of A. Fingers crossed I should get my hands on it mid next week. I was planning on doing the replacement myself; let you know how it goes . Any tips on do's and don’ts fitting the new bridge would be gratefully received . Oggy --------------------------
There are two types of bolt (different threads) - compare them with the ones you take off to make sure you use the right one. If there's any evidence of the threaded inserts in the body lifting, it might be an idea to epoxy them into the body. If you're doing that, leave the area where the bridge earth wire makes contact with the threaded insert free of epoxy. I've heard of 2 instances of missing allen keys. The saddle adjustment one is some small daft imperial size which I forget. It would be easier if they just remembered to supply BOTH keys.
12. Too old? Pah, I'll be playing as long as my arms and hands still work!
13. You'll probably have to remortgage your house, but: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=320499882182
14. Gary bought my Traben Chaos Attack. Came to collect as arranged. No problems.
15. This bass is now sold!
16. I have to agree - zero tolerance for sob stories - what it basically means is that the seller doesn't like the price it fetched. Stick to your guns!
17. +1 for the Hipshot - see the full skinny here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=17555

Panda Eyes Gigs

Booking gigs in reverse - next one is 25th March at Snafu, Aberdeen, supporting Three Blind Wolves.
19. I find the Tascam bass trainer (I have the MP3 one) indispensable for this kind of thing - slow down without changing pitch, pitch changing without affecting tempo, bass boost/enhance/cut, and of course portable - fling it in your gigbag and practice anywhere your bass is. I know there's software out there that can do the job but I haven't found any to be as convenient (or reliable) as the hardware solution. Sometimes when I'm finding it tough even with the Tascam I load the MP3 into Audacity then minus EQ the hell out of the higher frequencies.
20.
Nothing wrong with a discount but sometimes you feel its more that they are bored of looking at it and by marking it as 'ex demo' it alows them to go lower than others just to shift it.
If they don't start shifting old stuff then as a customer I get bored of looking at it. Aberdeen shops - take note!
21. I'm not from York, but welcome to the forum anyway
22. You can't beat the sound (and sights) of an orchestra in full flight. It's the only music which sounds good in the Music Hall in Aberdeen - the music it was designed for. I haven't been at a good sounding band gig in there, ever.

24.
Yeah, That might be a good avenue to explore! Im not really sure it'd be worth it tho as i'd have to find an original moog pre amp, which i think would be tricky!! Although saying that I have just found a new scratch plate and pup's on fleabay.com!!
Oh, well that does put a different spin on it, I thought you had the circuitry. That will be trickier to return to stock condition, yes
25.
Hi, After fitting a new jack socket to my Kubicki, a few of the solder points came away very easily from the existing 9v battery connectors. I've purchased an 18v gotoh battery box http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Gotoh-18-Volt-Batter...=item518dd421c2 and would like to rout out an area near the control cavity and use the channel from the neck pickup to the control cavity to route the 9v battery cables through. That's the plan, but I'm unsure how best to go about routing about an area on the back of the bass. Could anyone with experience of routing through a lacquered area give me any tips please? Cheers, Lee
Lacquered or not, a router spins so fast that it won't make any difference, as long as your bit is sharp of course! I have fitted a single Gotoh battery box to an already finished guitar with no problem. I used an MDF template, but I had no suitable roller bits so I used a guide bush instead and made the template the appropriate amount larger.
