1. You can buy single strings no problem. I have bought from Stringmail and they are pretty cheap, if you can call DB strings cheap. They give you the choice of sizes you want. Anything from 1/2 to 4/4, depending on the string. There are quite a few places on the net that sell DB strings, just do a search.
2.
I had one for a while, quite an early one I seem to remember. Nice enough but didn't really blow me away and I sold it soon afterwards. In fat, OTPJ came round to try it and decided he didn't want one after all I now have a Godin which I much prefer. These rarely come up for sale but I know there's a 5 string up for grabs at BassGear (because that's the one that inspired me to look for a 4 string equivalent!). http://www.bassgear.co.uk/products-page/pr...ring-pre-owned/
What did you find were the differences between the two basses? How did sound compare? I believe the Godin has a narrower nut than the Electro.
3. Thanks for your thoughts Phil. Rich, OTPJ did appear once recently on the Status thread but has disappeared again.
4. Been there for years Mr. Pink. Just trying to broaden the scope.
5. Are there any of you who own a Status Electro who would care to chip in with your experiences of the instrument. Any of the four models, whether or not you still own it.
6. Just been looking through the same articles and the new Artist and Deluxe basses look gorgeous. A nice subtle variation on the Overwater body shape. Just right!
7.
Have a look here. It's got several different hardnesses
It's so hard I can't get into it.
8.
MB1. Murphy for me! (The blonde in Moloko)
You still looking for your coat, Martin?
9. What a bag of No.2s
10. Basschat Marketplace ForSale: Electric basses For Sale: Double Bass and EUB Paraphernalia For Sale: Amps and Cabs etc. Unless anyone has a better idea.
11.
Just a couple of 'Jazz' notes...
That's an accidental.
12. Thanks daf. It seems to have everyone stumpped. I've emailed the Violin Shop in Glasgow where I bought the bass but that was about five or six years ago so I don't know if they will be able to help either. Hmm.
13. The G does have a different ball end, solid as oposed to the hole in the other two. The silks on each string are different colours too.
14. Thanks. I've tried that and didn't get anywhere with it.
15. Can anyone identify what make these strings are? They came on my current DB when I bought it but I swapped them out for TI Spirocores. The E Spiro broke recently so I put the E from this set back on and it has a lovely clear sharp tone to it. They were not good for bowing so I would suspect a pizz string of some sort. Thanks for any help. G String D String A String
16. No thanks! For that money I could get 4 pretty high spec Status basses and enjoy them far more. Everyone plays Fenders.
17.
Is there such a thing as a good slapped fretless bass recording??? Ooooo
Here's one introduced by your old mate Andy Batton Foster. Remember him? No?
18. His music never really floated my boat but his playing was fantastic. I just loved everything about the way he played the bass even if he wasn't a big influence on me. Will be missed.
19. Just sold an amp to Brett. Effortless transaction and he was very patient in waiting for snow to clear and Christmas/New Year to be out the way before sending.
20. That sounds painful too. I've never gone that far but have caught my nail on a string and it hurt but not to the extent of bleeding. Might expect it to fall off in good time.
21. Phew! I thought something had happened to Jimmy Nail. Glad he's alright.
22.
yep, Dave Margen, check this.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hp7w6x1Fe7Y
But that's not a fretless bass he's playing.
23.
That's a bit harsh.
Oh no it isn't!
24. People often mock the fact we only play one note at a time but that kind of playing just sets that rhythm so well. While everyone else stays at the same pace you are able to speed things up and slow them down just by playing two or four notes to the bar. Love it.
25. Have you had any lessons on double bass? From what you are saying I'd say go straight to DB. When I started playing DB the trumpet player in the jazz band I play in said I'd never be short of work with a DB. Didn't believe him at the time but that has proven to be the case. The action on a DB can be altered to your taste by a good luthier who understands them. The first DB I had was pretty well unplayable until the action was lowered. My current DB was set up for jazz playing and is very comfortable. Perhaps hire a DB and get some proper lessons. It might be that some good technique would help you bond with the instrument. They have a wonderful sound even if they are a pox to cart around.
