please recommend me a good double bass tuition book!
BassBus replied to macclad's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Also Todd Philips' "Esential Techniques for Acoustic Bass" DVD gives some really good tips. He sets out the left hand positioning in grid form on the screen. -
I use Hotwires flats on my S2 phenolic board. I don't like flats on a wooden board so if you're having problems with too much top end why not try a set of flats. With all the mids cut I get a lovely "loose" sound. Depends what you're looking for of course. Any chance of some sound samples of the fretless?

Still as beautiful over here as they are on Statii.com. Is that an ebony neck on the fretless?
So don't dis my bass!
How could anyone dis a beauty like that. You're a lucky guy Alec. -
Much as I enjoy playing it I do feel the quality of the Yamaha when I go to that. The Washburn has now moved on and I never compared the two of them. Nowadays I prefer the sound from a humbucker so it doesn't get played that much, specially as I have a Status Series 2000. Now nothing compares to that.

Lovely playing from all three of you. I love piano trios. Just a pitty about some of the camera work.
Hi, What is your opinion of the Columbus Series 3, say compared to your other basses and they seem pretty rare, at least on Google anyway :-) , how much do they go for? Cheers, D
It is a cheap bass, cost me £125 late 80s/early 90s and has a plywood body. Having said that it has a cracking sound and a lovely neck on it. Through a SansAmp BDDI I can get a very passable Geddy Lee sound. I'm sure you could pick one up on Ebay for next to nothing if you ever see one.
The one in the middle is broken. It's heads snapped off
I know. I had a terrible accident with it shortly after it arrived.
It says on my order confirmation: Facing wood: Alder with Graphite Shell Back wood: N/A Tone block: N/A Veneer: N/A Finish: Natural High Gloss Polyester I'm not sure if that means it's all-in-one construction or not? Rob said it'll be Graphite finish front and back fading to black around the edges.
I stand corrected. -

Agreed but Rob's wooden basses are as consistent as his all graphite basses. That's why they recommend the walnut tone core. At the end of the day it comes down to the kind of tone you want. I'm lucky enough to have both all-graphite and wooden Statii and they both give me what I want in different situations. -

All Status necks are moulded graphite. The Series 2000 was a one piece moulded instrument. As I understand it the Stealth has a lighter material in its core to keep weight down. Rich can correct me if I'm wrong there. Chris Wolstenholme's new all graphite S2 is an all-in-one moulded instrument. There are full descriptions of all instruments Rob builds on the Status website. Just click on "Basses". http://status-graphite.com/status/frames/index_home.html -

S2000, #84, arrived back today safe and sound. Had a bit of a transplant. The old preamp was burpping quite a bit and of course when it gets to the factory Rob can't find anything wrong with it. It behaved impeably with him. Just like a child really. We decided it might be better to replace the preamp just to be sure. New pots as well and everything is sounding beautiful again. I'm a happy man and it's back just in time to play a gig tomorrow night. Series 2000, #84 Fretless S2 and Series 2000 #84 -

It's in the system of some delivery company so might be in the hands of a jobsworth. Stayed in all morning, nothing. Mid afternoon two empty mesages on the answerphone. No note through the door. Plenty of neighbours in all day. One wonders if these companies care about anyone other than their own profits. Answer is it should have been here today. -

I did a BA (Hons) in Counselling, the psychological variety, as a very mature student. Three years hard work but a fantastic experience. But now back on topic. Interesting results in the poll. S2 romping away in the lead. Not even Kingbass or Streamline coming close. Keep the votes coming in. -

It's great to hear such enthusiasm, Rich. Make the most of it. I should have #84 back in my hands next week just in time to take it out on a gig next Saturday. All good reward for my graduation yesterday. -
I can join your merry gang now!
That's a very pretty 2000 you have there matski. Lucky man. -
I have a Status S2000 which has no trus rod. When I first took delivery of it there were a set of 30s on it. They were buzzing quite a bit so I put on a set of 35s and no buzz. The heavier strings just pulled the neck a little bit more. Point is that this problem just doesn't happen any more with Statii as they have rods. You have that bit of adjustment. As Crazykiwi said it depends on the manufacturing process. Status necks these days have a more flexible structure which allows for a trus rod.

That does it for me Rich. The way that wood just bursts out from the pickups is a work of art. Just beautiful. -

Well I'm sure some here know my fretless S2, Miss Maple, and my S2000 will be back in my hands sometime next week after it's sebatical at the factory having had a minor oporation. Been missing it. Someday I would love an Electro. The sound would fit the jazz band just fine. -
Anyone who thinks that is the work of a 3 piece ..well, words fail me.
Well the last time I counted the members of Muse there were three of them. In their latter years Pink Floyd were a three piece. Rush are a three piece. So what if Muse were augmented every now and again with a live keyboard player. Most of the time they were not. Level 42 have always augmented their stage shows with sequenced parts. It's still three guys who make the original music. Spose you can't please all the people all the time.

That was an all graphite Status S2. Don't judge the sound of Status basses by his slap sound. It was pretty horific. Those basses produce a much better sound than came out last night.

I thought the new stuff was a bit lackluster. It hasn't done much for me since I first heard it. That was only in the middle of the set though. The older stuff at the beginning and the end was just fantastic as usual. Seems Chris has seen the light and switched to Status big time. Good for him. Best three piece since Rush.
