stewblack replied to Paul S's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Inviting offers too. Really, really nice instruments, insanely cheap. EDIT : Sorry, its an auction; damn I hate that when they advertise a price. Why can't all auctions start at 0.- 10 replies

I know a few people here have the J&d mini. I very much doubt there will be much, if any, difference. The HBs are way better than they have any right to be at the price they charge. I gig with Harleys on a regular basis, never let me down, always sound great.

On balance I prefer the V4. But there's not much in it.

I am the world's greatest paisley fan, this made me tremble.

I gigged one of these for many years, when I got something bigger I put it in my bar where it became the house amp and saw many more years of service. Put it this way, bassists who heard it at jam session and gigs always complimented it and even went out and bought themselves one. Don't be fooled into thinking it won't be powerful enough for a band. These are loud! Tons of tone options, including the famous Trace preset which divides people. Some (like me) who used it for years love it, others will explain at great length why it can't possibly work in a band situation. Whichever camp you are in, it's a switch, you don't have to use it. Great combos these.

9I guessed it would sound different. I think you should all buy one then sell them here at around the same time. This will drive the price down for me. Waddaya say??

I love it. Absolutely love it.

There has been a price increase on a few HB basses. Probably because I didn't buy one last month

I have a secret hankering I must confess. Is it possible to describe the difference between an 8 string bass and a four through an octave pedal?
-
Dunno about my diary, but my wallet would definitely need to be a lot fuller 😢

What type of strings are the 'second set' as it were? Are they like geetar strings?

I sold Dan a multi effect and he was utterly polite, prompt, friendly and courteous throughout. Despite first class post the thing took forever to arrive, but Dan refused to be anything other than congeniality personified. Top bloke.

The man himself was selling off cable and such - ypu never know, you could become the man! @obbm will be the one to ask

Lots of adjustment there, how you listen makes a big difference too. Headphones won't tell the whole story

Also try the preamp section for dirt.

They do a veggie version?

QUICK POLL: Terminology smackdown - Pickguard or Scratchplate?
stewblack replied to wateroftyne's topic in Bass Guitars
Weird. I voted, entirely confident it would show me 90/10 in favour of scratchplate. Genuinely stumped me, that has. -
We must always remember. Whatever we buy, however hard we work, 99% of audience members and other musicians will not notice. I've told this sorry tale before but i'll tell it once more. Played a gig, which was going down a storm, My Eden 8x10 combo (God I loved that rig) failed with a few songs to go. When i say it failed, it began responding to the bass with horrendous farting distortion - not anything even close to resembling 'tone' . I had no back up so I looked despairingly around at my bandmates who just blithely carried on. Rather than do nothing I played on with this horrrible noise where notes should be. At least it was in time. No one. Not a bandmate, not one person in the crowd, not even my mate who was there to watch me, no one noticed. I learned a valuable lesson that day. Whatever we do is for our amusement only. So buy basses you like, amps and cabs which please you. Nobody cares.

I'd advise against tying up money in stock likely to sit unwanted for a very long time. Unless they are in a good location for passing trade as well, unlikrly given the nature of the business I try to avoid paying to rehearse whenever possible. We use pubs and clubs happy to have us in on a quiet night and maybe sell us a couple of pints. However right now that's not an option so I'm forced to pay. There is only one consideration when choosing a space, and that is price. Nothing else. Every penny I spend effectively comes out of the next gig money, and there's precious few of those to look forward to.

What are you listening to right now?
stewblack replied to Sarah5string's topic in General Discussion
Paul Weller's new one. It's very good. -
Yeah I wasn't so specific, anyway it's cool, I'm just looking forward to seeing how it all comes together.

That's so much simpler than my insane solution
