A bit of rocking out yesterday on the bass with two extra strings.

As said before...Ampeg PF-500 fits the bill in every criteria I was looking for in a head, and the Compact is in a league of its own. This rig ain't going anywhere!
-
My rig is a PF-500 with a Compact and it's amazing. Though I don't have experience with the newer Ampeg cabs, I switched from a SVT610HLF to the Compact and it's just as loud and deep. Much clearer too. Go Barefaced...it'll change your life!

+1 for the Ampeg PF-500. Serious amp!

As above- I owned a US-made one for five years without any problems. Apart from breaking off five of the crappy EQ sliders. Sounds like bad luck to me!
Mine arrives today. Another Barefaced compact user here.
I used my PF-500 + Compact loudly for the first time the other night at a rehearsal and was blown away by the tone from the amp paired with the clarity of the Compact. My bass sound was distinct the entire way through rehearsal competing with a drummer and guitarist, and the amp was set flat! Prepare to be utterly amazed. I can't imagine how loud it would be at 4 ohms!
That PF500 looks so much better here than in the stock photos! Would you say the BF Compact sounds similar to the 610HLF then?
Well I used the new rig properly loud last night at a practice and I was completely blown away by how amazing it sounded. Everything was a lot clearer and less wooly- and my bass was distinct the entire way through rehearsal. It was definitely as loud as the 6x10 which is awesome. Funny thing is I THOUGHT it was loud, then realised I had the -15db pad switch in. When I pressed it and played a massive chord it nearly caused the building to collapse. That was on about half volume...with 300 of the 500 watts going through the cab I expect it would reverse the rotation of the earth or something if I hooked up a Midget as well!

So my new rig is now complete- PF-500 + a Barefaced compact and it sounds amazing. Thanks go to this thread for bringing this head to attention! Gonna do a proper video review of it on Youtube soon...there don't seem to be any decently recorded demos on there yet. Can't wait to gig it!

Ampeg PF-500 + Barefaced Compact. Gone from a SVT450H + 610HLF to this and I'm not regretting it at all

Yes, sorry for the latest 'lightweight kit dilemma' thread! Narrowed it down to: Markbass Little Mark II/III (Used for £350 ish) Orange Terror Bass ( New for £400) Ampeg PF-500 (New for £350ish on Thomann) Gonna be pairing one of these with a Barefaced Compact. I've come from an Ampeg SVT450H and a 6x10...loved the tone but going to be selling the motor soon as I'm going to Uni, and I need a lightweight rig to take on the bus! I'm in a retro-rock band along the lines of the Dead Weather, Raconteurs, Graveyard, 'Sabbath and like that gritty, but not farty tubey sounding deliciousness. I play fingerstyle and use a Ricky 4003/P-Bass. I'm leaning towards the PF500 to retain the Ampegness and grit...do you think I'm right? I hear the Orange is a one trick pony... Cheers guys!

I took the pickup cover off mine for a while then put it on again recently. Just got to get used to playing with your thumb on the neck pickup and really digging in for that lovely tone.

Glad I'm not the only one with a hatred of slap.

The strange and disturbing world of RICK-O-SOUND
Matt_Arlita replied to Cosmo Valdemar's topic in General Discussion
I read on some official Rick propaganda that use of any old stereo cable/y-splitter will result in 'unwanted hum and significant loss of treble' - anyone noticed this?
When I went into the studio with my old band I split the signal using Rickosound into a Mesa Boogie 400+ and my Ampeg SVT450 using a bog standard stereo splitter and it sounded immense. No such treble loss! -

Did this one yesterday. Heat gun, paint scraper, then sanded and beeswax oiled.
+1. Got one off here and am really pleased with the tone. Lots of control.
Another +1 for the M80. It's the only 'effect' pedal I use.
