1. I had 6 tracks all near the top of my scoring chart this month! I have to give a well deserved mention to Bleat who has scored my very first perfect 10. That was an absolute beauty of a track. You nailed the sound and the mix so well I'll be adding it to my reference tracks!
2. Oh man, thanks for those. I didn't realise you could do so much with the Kontakt library and some scripting! That choir morph feature is awesome with the Komplete Kontrol S61 keyboard as the morph function is mapped to one of the knobs by default. I've just had a play with that multi from the first video and there's some nice stuff to play with!
3. This dropped into my inbox just now: https://soundiron.com/products/mercury-micro for $19. Listen to the video, it sounds very impressive especially for the price.
4. Your'e not helping I've actually got a code for 25% off that I think expires the end of this month. I do have a few orchestral libraries (Miroslav, Kontakt library, Rhapsody Colours, the stuff in KU10 and Apocalypse Elements drums) so I'm thinking I should get my head round orchestration first before I splash £300-400 on Albion One. Less buying, more music-making is in order!
5. I've not watched this week's Samplecast yet but I'll check those out. Been looking at string and brass libraries recently. I got the Rhapsody Colours bundle when it was on offer but I've been debating whether I should just take the plunge on Albion One. Bit pricey though!
6. What are the drivers and latency like on the Audients?
7. Finally. After a month of battling with this one I've got my entry. I didn't think I was going to make it so I'm pleased to offer it up in its current state. https://soundcloud.com/mornats/the-withered
8. I actually had better results going through the DI on my Markbass 121P into my interface (Focusrite Forte) than plugging direct into the Forte. I got a much cleaner, better balanced sound. You can always use an amp/cab emulator (Amplitube, Guitar Rig etc.) to get something like the cab sound if you wanted.
9. I've got a Focusrite Forte which they stopped supporting a few years ago so no more driver updates. Lag and general stability are the main issues (although I can't rule out other factors causing instability). So anyway, I've been thinking about the Scarlett gen2 as they seem to have pretty nice latency and shouldn't get dropped shortly after release by Focusrite. The Forte does sound beautiful though.
10. I might scrape through and make this one. This bout of flu going round has been sticking with me for three weeks now and I've been making slow progress. Hopefully I should get it tweaked and mixed this weekend have something in time for the deadline. Good to have you back Douglas
11.
I hear galloping riffs and foreboding sunsets. In 7/8 of course.
Surely in 3/4 if the horse only has 3 legs?
12. I live in a converted Victorian terrace house and the guy above me is a drummer. He practices hand drums and I can hear them fairly clearly but I don't mind at all. He's really good at playing, doesn't play them long or at excessive volumes and plays them at very reasonable hours. When he moved in we had a chat and I said I played bass and mixed music at home and said to let me know if it ever disturbed him. He was really cool and said just go ahead and do what I want. Still, I be as reasonable as possible and tend to mix on speakers when I think they're out. It makes the world of difference when you have understanding neighbours. It's nice knowing that either one of us will mention any excess noise to the other and we'd both be happy to sort it out. Also, it's hard to find a good drummer these days and I have one right near me now! I must be the only person I know who was pleased to find out that a drummer had moved in above him!
13.
I've always been slightly uncomfortable about the MOBO awards. Is there a MOWO awards?
I believe this is because all of the other awards are deemed to be biased towards white artists, hence the need to focus on music of black origin to address the balance. ** Edit ** I posted at the same time as Cato who seems to be a lot more correct than I was
14. I get back home today so will be listening and voting soon (which means at least one non-entrant has voted)
15. Some cool gifts have been mentioned already. The C64 sounds great and I may get myself one of those Cthulu for younger readers books I bought myself a Maschine Jam to compliment my Maschine mkII and Komplete Kontrol keyboard
16. It's actually a MIM standard P bass with a gold pickup on but it does look like a 50s reissue now (minus the ash trays and thumb rest).
17. I can see it on desktop but it's not supported on mobile (the plugin probably uses Flash).
18. I bought my P bass a little early Christmas present (look after the ones you love right?) It's a nice bling gold pickguard Looks the biz I reckon.
19. It would be Nirvana's "Territorial Pissings" for me!
20.
Does it count if I use the original vocals (with their permission of course), but everything else by me or is that too much like a remix rather than a cover?
I obviously don't make the rules but that should be ok in my book. What I love about the composition challenge is that it's about hearing some very different interpretations of the picture. I can't see why interpreting what is classed as a cover is much different to the philosophy behind that.
21. I got a pair of Audio Technica M50x heaphones. They're not flat but I've been able to mix with them quite well. My Yamaha HS7 monitors pair up nicely with them. The Yamahas give that flatish response and exposure of all the horrible frequencies and the headphones help check the mix with a more hi-fi sound. I know the headphones really well now which helps massively. Before the M50x, I used a couple of Superlux headphones - the closed back 662F and the open back 668B. The 668Bs are a fantastic set of headphones for the £25 I paid for them although I have to say for general music listening the Audio Technicas top them.
22. Anyway, I've posted mine now: https://soundcloud.com/mornats/a-cover It's not quite a proper cover but should be recognisable once it kicks in. Let's take a look at the audio wizardry that went into this: Percussion ----------- Heavyocity Damage Maschine - Halcyon Sky Old Photos kit Maschine - Hexagon Highway SFX Hitech kit NI Rise and Hit Synths and sounds ----------------- Photosynthesis Vol 1 - Sphere NI Massive - The World preset from Massive Polaris NI Absynth - Antromendor preset from Memento Mori Choirs and vocals ----------------- Impact Soundworks Vocalisa slavic choir Soundiron Olympus Elements choir Strezov Sampling Storm Choir Real instruments ---------------- Fender precision bass Effects ------- Izotope Neutron NI Replika Guitar Rig 5 Pro NI RC 48 reverb Put together in Reaper.
23. Just a thought, are we allowed to upload covers to Soundcloud? Their policy says not: https://soundcloud.com/pages/copyright
24.
http://hoppolestudio...close-audio.jpg Found it
Cheers! If it happens again I'll check that option. Interestingly, it's ticked for me but I can still switch applications and have audio playing. Like I said in my original post, that's handy as my Focusrite Forte control panel (volume control etc.) is a separate app and I need to switch to that whilst audio is playing.
