1.
Yeah count me in! Be interested to hear about that I haven't played any of the recent DOOM games but I was weaned on the original back in the '90s, which had a really great soundtrack (co-produced by Nine Inch Nails if I remember correctly... or was that Quake?).
Here you go: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/308471-i-built-my-own-doom-array/
 2. I was watching Mick Gordon's video on sound design for the latest DOOM game a while ago. http://gdcvault.com/play/1024068/-DOOM-Behind-the Around 17 minutes in he describes the effects array that he built to get the sounds for the soundtrack. So I had a go at making one myself in Reaper. We have four channels of effects: DOOM 1, DOOM 2, DOOM 3, and Final DOOM. The audio source is routed into DOOM 1, DOOM 2, DOOM 3 and Final DOOM. Each of these is routed out to the Amp channel which in turn is routed out to the Comp (compressor) channel. Additionally, DOOM 1 is routed out as a sidechain to compressors on DOOM 2 and DOOM 3. The Amp channel is intended to create a feedback loop by routing a small amount of its own output back into the Amp channel. I've been genuinely afraid to turn off the feedback loop protection in Reaper so this part hasn't been activated yet. The Output channel accepts a send from the DOOM 1, DOOM 2, DOOM 3, Final DOOM and Source channels. All of these sat in a folder under DOOM Array 2 which has Neutron on with an EQ, compressor and limiter. Here's the effects chain for each channel: DOOM 1

Rammfire Amp Head
Ferric TDS Saturator
Big Fuzz
DOOM 2

Tantra (Lofi and Distortion units activated)
Rammfire Amp Head
Supercharger GT compressor (accepting the sidechain input with heavy saturation)
Neutron (acting as a limiter only)
DOOM 3

Replika XT
Supercharger GT (accepting the sidechain)
Supercharger GT (massive saturation)
Neutron (EQ, compressor and exciter)
Spring Reverb
Supercharger GT (fuzz)
Tape Echo
ReaGate (to cut back on the background noise from Replika XT)
Amp No effects at the moment as this was intended to be the feedback loop. Comp

Supercharger GT
Output

Supercharger GT (set as a sidechain although I've noticed I'm not sending anything to it)
Neutron (EQ and compressor)
Here's a soundfile of Alicia's Keys piano playing a low C note through it. https://www.dropbox.com/s/t8y9rgy6nfb1rif/DOOM%20Array.mp3?dl=0 This is a work in progress and I have several versions of it that I've been tweaking. It's quite fun, makes a lot of noise and throws up weird things sometimes.

 4. That's what everyone at work did when I told them about it!
 5. Haha indeed! If anyone's interested in how my DOOM Array is sounding let me know and I'll pop a thread up about it.
 6. Last night I build my DOOM Array* in Reaper and really want to use it on a track but it's absolutely not suitable for that pic! * You're asking what's that? check out Mick Gordon's video where he talks about the effects rig he set up to make the sounds for the DOOM 2016 soundtrack. http://gdcvault.com/play/1024068/-DOOM-Behind-the - he talks about the rig around 17 mins in but the entire thing is well worth watching if you're even remotely interested in sound design.
 7. I immediately thought of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RahUzSykaiw
 8. Just managed to have a listen and get my vote in!
 9.
Voted. I did like Mornat's, even though I thought the choirs at the end were a little ott for this picture Another good one to fit the picture from Mr. Shot, again.
I agree with you about the choirs but you know, new library and all that
 10. I've had a prolific month. I've managed to knock out two more since I did the one for this month's comp. (Here if anyone's interested - also these are NOT entries for the challenge! https://soundcloud.com/mornats/insurrection and https://soundcloud.com/mornats/dark-forest). Insurrection features my new plugin - Tantra along with Replika XT taking a fairly decent orchestral drum pattern that was played through a Maschine kit and twisting it a tad. Dark Forest was an extended playabout with some Massive synth presets and Ethera. I also grabbed 4 of Mike Verta's masterclasses on sale. Two on composition and two on orchestration and they're proving to be inspirational.
 11. Can't believe I've not mentioned this before. If you buy the latest issue of Computer Music magazine (and can get over the content that constantly focuses on phat beats and killer lead lines for EDM) then you get a whole bunch of plugins (instruments and effects) for free. Here's the list http://www.musicradar.com/computermusic/cm-plugins-full-list-of-our-exclusive-free-vst-au-plugin-instruments-and-effects-571808
 12. Thanks I recently updated my Replika to Replika XT (delay plugin) and made judicious use of it especially on the drums and piano. Also the piano playing comes from some EZKeys midi which is turning out to be a fantastic tool as well. I don't rate their piano sounds but for composing, transposing and getting some good piano licks it's unbeatable. I just drag the midi out into a better sounding piano - Alicia's Keys and The Giant in this instance.
 13.
May have to tone it down or sweeten it before I play it to anyone.
Nah, I don't tone anything down Go for it!
 14. Why is that piano playing itself? https://soundcloud.com/mornats/broken-keys
 15. I have a few pianos... Alicia's Keys City Piano Evolve R2 Ivy Audio - Piano in 162 Plastic Ghost Piano Rain Piano MkII Retro Machines Mk2 Library Scarbee Mark I Scarbee Vintage Keys Library Spitfire Labs - Plucked Grand Piano Spitfire LABS Felt Piano Spitfire Orchestral Grand library The Gentleman The Giant The Grandeur The Maverick Addictive Keys Grand A whole bunch in Sampletank Plus any synth pianos. I don't have a real one though - lucky you! And I got the half price upgrade from Replika to Replika XT which is amazeballs. And I've been playing with some dark grinding organic dirty sounding cinematic underscore synths. Oh my.
 16. Native Instruments have their summer half price update/upgrade sale on. As a result there are several ways to grab Kontakt for cheap (cheaper than normal anyway). https://www.native-instruments.com/en/specials/komplete/summer-of-sound-2017/ If you own a qualifying Kontakt library instrument you can grab the full Kontakt 5 for £104.50. If you fancy some of their hardware (I have the S61 keyboard, Maschine MkII and Maschine Jam and love them all) then you get a special price on a bundle. Cheapest way to get Kontakt here is buying the Maschine Mikro and paying £159 for the upgrade to Komplete 11 - this gives you WAY more stuff than just Kontakt. I'm currently on Komplete 10 Ultimate and since my purchase of Albion One I'm no longer looking at the Symphony Series otherwise it would have been a no-brainer bargain update for me. As it stands, I'm interested in the upgrade to Replika XT and maybe Form as that looks interesting. Not worth the update price right now for me due though. So I may just grab the Replika XT upgrade.
 17. Gah, I had a 4-way tie! Nice work everyone.
 18. Things are a bit chaotic at the moment so I saw the chaos that carved the canyon: https://soundcloud.com/mornats/chaotic
 19. Do you have any third party Kontakt libraries? You can get Kontakt on a crossgrade for £209. Just log in to your Native Instruments account, click buy on Kontakt and see whether you have a qualifying product. Another way to do it is to get the Komplete bundle. If you're in the market for one of their keyboards or a Maschine then you get Komplete Select with it which can be upgraded to Komplete (which includes Kontakt and a lot more products) for I think £319 (hard to tell as I own Komplete Ultimate 10 so it offers me the update primarily). They sometimes have sales where the upgrade is cheaper, sometimes up to half price. I worked my way from the keyboard with a cut-price upgrade to Komplete 10 which I then upgraded to Komplete Ultimate in a half price upgrade sale. I worked out this was the cheapest possible way I could ever have bought KU10. I was after the keyboard anyway so it worked out well
 20. A lot of the cheaper libraries require the full version of Kontakt to run. It's a shame as there's a load of top quality fairly cheap libraries out there. There's a cost to developers to get their instrument to work in the free Kontakt player and I heard it was around the £50k mark (per instrument) so it rules out a lot of the smaller developers and their cheaper libraries.
 21. You should definitely check out this thread compiled by Skol: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/248509-beginners-guide-to-home-recording/ lots of recommendations on how to get started. I started off recording my bass playing on a Macbook Pro using a (now discontinued) Guitar Rig Session interface from Native Instruments. I progressed to adding EZDrummer to add in drums to play along to. EZDrummer comes with drum samples and drum midi files so you can either create your own beats or use and tweak the midi (or use third-party midi too). A basic M-audio 49 key midi keyboard followed and then it all escalated from there for me! I now use a Native Instruments S61 keyboard, Maschine Mk II, Maschine Jam, dedicated monitor speakers and headphones and have SSDs full of premium sample libraries (Komplete Ultimate, full orchestral libraries etc.) Happy to answer any questions about what you may need to get going. For example, sometimes it may be worth skipping the entry level version of something if you think you'll use it extensively in the future, or plan to expand in a certain direction.
 22. JRRShop have Miroslav Philharmonik CE for $49.99. Apply the code "GROUP" to get it down to $41.99 (if it doesn't auto-apply it) - quite the bargain! https://www.jrrshop.com/ik-multimedia-miroslav-philharmonik-ce
 23. I've got a couple of sample libraries and instruments that would do a nice ambient track for this.
 24. Thanks lowdown, I'll check it out. By the way, I did post on another thread explaining the performance I'm getting out of my PC at the moment (http://basschat.co.uk/topic/303671-can-you-recommend-a-pclaptop-for-music/page__view__findpost__p__3290429). CPU seem alright at the moment and purging samples in Kontakt is almost halving my RAM usage. I'll still check out VE Pro though. I noticed there's a free edition but haven't looked hard enough to see if that would give me any benefit. Thanks again Si. By the way, I dropped a note to Focusrite support to say that the anti-virus swap worked a treat. I asked a little about any new driver updates for the Forte too to see what they say.
