1. Chris, I believe Kiwi (the point of his reply) has been trying to obtain the correct sound for the piece of music that he has been asked to play........ That sound MAY have required a specific sound, or maybe the band required a specific sound or look, hence his post above....... I understand about "your own sound" and thats kinda what I'm after...... however I can understand the pressure to replicate a specific sound to appease, /please/ fit it with others in the band..... I should know I have a P bass because of that----- I'm not in love with it, but it does produce a sound that I cannot get from my PRSs and that is a sound my guitarist wants...... Him happy=Me happy!

Gosh!

Hummn theres a pretty good chance we'll have been there at the same time.... used to hang with a bunch of bikers that frequented it as well as The Flying Horse, the Trip, Tiffs (on a Monday 'rock night') and the one on Mansfield Road next to it the name of which escapes me ... The G'nor got converted into a flourescent bar in the 90s and attracted some of the more 'earthy' types that lived off Forest Fields.... My hair and taste in company changed in the mid 80s which probably kept me out of a lot of trouble..... Oh those heady days...
3.
It is a fantastic bass. I just wish someone could take 2 or 3 Ibs off it for me.
I'm fairly sure that if you remove the neck and strings that would account for the 3 lbs........
4. Not being a certified 'Fenderhead' I will bow to the far more experienced ramblings above....... I would have thought the best advice would still be...... if at all possible, to play 'em before you buy...... Unless you are absolutely sure about what it is you're buying????? £450 is a substantial investment and you want to be sure its what you want and need.... if its not EXACTLY right another will come along shortly.... sometimes you have to patient.......
5. Lovely Lovely Lovely bass...... One thing tho? why do they call it a P when it has a skinny J neck? Pah! Fender, a law unto themsleves!!!!!
6. BB..... Good point...... Is it good value? Not when you could get yourself this for £425..... (although its not Orange I grant you !) http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...=fender+highway

Gosh!

Good grief the G'vnor is a venue now? I spent many a happy hour there as a long haired miss-directed biker in my younger days!
8. In this day and age, the manufacturing methods are pretty similar, the materials will be similar and (now) the QC will be pretty closely scrutineered...... so apart from huge disparities in labour costs, (and no Custom shop in the other than the US), you will get a very good instrument (if its a genuine Fender) regardless of where it was made...... No if you want the orginal Mojo, or maybe some exotic non-sustainable selected woods or you are just need to have it MIA... then a US is the only option. If you want an excellent instrument but cannot afford to pay thru the nose, Genuine MIJ MIM will play just as well as a MIA. Or as Muppet states... Nail Head hit.......
9. I use a Thomann 'thebox' monitor for playing my drum machine thru. and also practice thru the Boss micro..... Mine is 2x5" and is very clear sound... Thomann do much bigger ones and they seem really good value.....
10.
Between J or P; for me it's a P. Maybe because the new hasn't worn off of it yet. My Jazz was my number one for years, but lately it's been the P. It's a 62 AVRI with flats on it and it gets the job done. I get more than one sound out of it with the tone knob.
What is it about a P with flats on that is soooo hard to reproduce with anything else???? I luuurve that sound........
11. Lush I'm 100% with Paul here..... if you sell that P you will regret it....... BTW "chunky neck?" they're wondeful! The other two are OK but IMHO would be better replaced by one P Highway One.... so you have a bestest and not quite so bestest but they both play similar and feel similar the Highway you can use and abuse and use etc....... If you didnt go for that option-- Then I'm 100% behind Paul- keep the P and put the money from the other 2 to the Rick that your obviously GASing for.
12. T'wud fit in well with John Mayalls Bluesbreakers..... I just wonder why?
13. Thanks S I was looking for ^^^^ that and couldnt remember where I'd read it!
14. WH...... You are right.... there is something definately fishy about this one..... 1stly shouldnt it have a certificate of authenticity, and 2ndly shouldnt the serial number be emebelished into the back of the neck? Me has a feelink that this is one of a run of 50th anni replicas they did in 2001....... Still a nice bass, but I'm not sure it is what its purported to be!
15. Mikey.... you rightly sound one happy bunny..... fancy doing a 'proper' review for the BC review thread? No Ibanez fretless in there! B.
16. SS, I cant tell you a comparison between an old one and the new crop.... but I can tell you that Stingrays are a fine instrument they play extremely well (I've played one but dont own one) and all the owners on here will pretty much swear by theirs!!!! Big Thumbs up from me! For what thats worth!
17. I realise this isnt the prettiest bass you'll ever see.... it would appear tho that you have a price brcket and you will be hard pushed to get a better made fretless for this amount...... 280126119242 on the 'bay of course...... Stagg? I'm afaid I have picked up a couple in shops and put them straight back down again..... They feel like they will fall apart in your hands........

19.
Keep the Fender. Swap out the cheap preamp in it and replace it with a Sadowsky or John East or Audere preamp and it will be a different beast. Hamster
Sound advice Hammy!! You could also check out the range of (slope of to a darkened room!) preamps and pupos from Seymour Duncan that are designed to fall stright into Fenders...... Yuuummmmyyyyyyyy........
20.
1 hour of solid technique practice with a metronome is enough for anybody on the bass in one day, and if you can manage that, you won't need a gripmaster. Remember as well that for those gripmasters to be effective, as in improve the strength in your fingers(not make you play better), you need to use it regularly, and I don't mean excessively, but if you just pick it up now and again, every other day, it won't do squat.
Spot on advice!

22. Now before you all shoot me down...... I do have a fairly sordid past in sport and have (trained and been trained by some very respected coaches)...... I would agree in the initial stages of learning to play one of these would be useful to build some directed strength, for your fretting fingers.... However once you have the ability to play without cramp or pain for say 30 mins... your time and effort would be best practising on an instrument or at least a neck (like the little fretty or whatever its called). as you need to build muscle memory ........ This is using the limbs in the discipline they are used for which develops joint ligamnets and muscle in a different way to the straight forward compression excersize that the Gripmaster would give........ If there are any sport scientists or Physios on here I'm sure they will back me up here....... Put simply if just anaerobic excersize alone produced the agilty that you need for everything, why arent ballet dancers built like doormen.. Dancers and gymnasts are pound for pound much stronger than a doorman, but lifting or pushing heavy wieghts would be much easier for teh doorman/body builder However would the body builder be able to do push ups in the handstand position? I think not..... Now does that make sense? If you want stronger fingers by all means use one. Using one on its own will not make you a better bass player.... If you used one for say 90secs of exercise before you started to pratice then 90 seconds after you practice followed by some stretches that would be highly likley to improve your digital dexterity.......
23. YOu didnt have long blonde permed hair did you...... we are partial to our sheep you know! Bet you were playing songs from "Deliverence" too
24. No probs bud.... My 40th is a NOS from the US I picked up a few months ago (if you ask me very nice I might give you the name of the shop as they seem to have a few old oddities they put up mostly Fenders so I know you'd love it!!!!) ..... its mint and No. 62 of 400 (62 being the year I was born so I luuuuurve it!) Wish I could stop it hummiong tho' Being good and popular (read- lots of sales) unfortunately do not go hand in hand, and what grips my **it, is that a magazine reviewer says someting is great and everyone goes goo goo... they say they dont like and everyone immmediatley thinks its poo....... and if we ever get to lie each side of SW we best let her decide..... (unless she fancies a 3 some......)
25. Just for your info folks I'm going to try to add this therad to the P bass one of Parkers as they relate to teh same shop and basses.....
