  6. Arco bass for sale - see DB/EUB for sale forum 21.7.2011 SOLD SOLD SOLD I probably put this in the wrong place as the instrument is supposed to be a transition between an acoustic bass guitar and the double bass.. If you want to have double bass tone without double bass hand stretch and transport issues please condsider this Arco Bass. Welcome to visit sunny S Devon (Plymouth) and try out .... sound samples/history/cnstruction - please check out luthiers website "Toby Chennell" Hand made acoustic instrument at a very decent price - open to sensible offers. Cheers fretless
  7. Having a turn out of old music stuff to fund new instrument.. I have set of bassist mags - some 69 issues ( one issue seems to have gone astray ) from when it started (oct 1994) to when it ended some 5 yrs later. obviously weigh quite a lot but cover loads of gear reviews and lots of interviews . music, etc. will not split but consider offers over £120 PLUS carriage if you cannot collect. am in plymouth
  8. Halfpenny worth on carbon/wood Check out details of my iceni zoot bass (basschat - bass for sale - 7.3.2011 " zoot fretless" ) This bass designed to offer tone/feel of real wood fretboard (nice piece of ebony) and stability + even tone of carbon neck, no horrid dead spots and excellent intonation with great tuning stability. My experience is that if the bass is subject to significant temp/humidity changes(playing on outside(hopefully covered) stage in glorious british summer weather ie hacking down with rain),the tuning does "go out" but is rarely more than a 1/4 tone and is always "out"by the same amount across all the strings. I know Mike Walsh (maker of Iceni Zoot custom basses) sent quite a few carbon neck basses abroard where players were having to contend with major heat/humidity issues which made "normal" wooden necked basses a nightmare to play/maintain. Interesting comment earlier in this topic re impossibility of combining wood fretboard with carbon neck ... on my bass there has never been any evidence of the fingerboard / neck join coming apart ...however there is a cosmetic issue with the varnish finish across the edge of the carbon neck and edge of the ebony fretboard - caused by the natural expansion /contraction of the ebony board whereas the carbon neck does not move at all. I believe Mike designed later basses with a very slight overlap on the ebony fingerboard relative to the neck and then took the varnish up to the overlap - don't know if this stopped the varnish finish "cracking" or not. Anyhow, an entirely cosmetic issue and you still have the feel of a proper wood fretboard rather than the "phrenolic or whatever alternatives... I tend to agree with previous comments about sound ie strings/playing style/pick-ups/amp and even playing environment are likely to have more influence on the tone you produce than the construction - especially if you are playing a bass with a decent electronics. I went down the carbon neck route to avoid deadspots, get long sustain and good neck stability - attributes of carbon which seem generally acknowledged by most posts here. you know what they say - there's only one bass player in most bands for a reason !!!@@
  9. SORRY, SORRY, SORRY am resident in plymouth (devon not USA)
  10. arco 5 string (e to high c) bass for sale SOLD SOLD SOLD supplied and made by luthier Toby Chennell and owned/played by me since last year bass has proved very helpful in making the transition from bass guitar to double bass as the Arco scale length is the same as bass guitar scale length but the sound is probably as close as you are going to get to a DB without playing a "full sized" instrument - plus the arco can be bowed just like a full sized version. The reduced body size also helps transport issues. I have gigged the Arco for swing band work and concert band work - I have fitted a fishman full circle pickup and the amplified sound retains the acoustic nature of the unamplified instrument. please see Toby's website (enter Toby Chennell into search engine)for full details of these basses and sound samples bass has soft cover and will include fishman pickup or reduce price by £200 if you do not want this pickup. looking for £1200 with pickup or £1000 without pickup towards my next double bass ! prefer collection - but happy to travel reasonable distance to facilitate same.

HISTORY I am the original owner, ordered and delivered summer 1998, used continuously to end of 2009. Purchased to provide a quality fretless instrument on which to become reasonable proficient; hence 1/4 fretlines and side dots which visually aid correct playing intonation. Totally reliable, very stable re tuning, no discernible "dead"spots on neck....Body condition excellent but for light wear to the varnish on rear face which will "t cut" out. For the last 15 months I have been concentrating on playing an upright and the Zoot is now surplus to my requirements. Neck condition good - very light wear to ebony fretboard as I have always used ground wound strings, varnish to edges of fretloard has lifted slightly, particularly around the 1/4 size fret position markers. These are light wood fillets inset in the ebony and, over time they have contracted/expanded sufficiently differently to the ebony so that the varnish finish has moved. I had the varnish to the edges re-finished about 6 years ago and they were cosmetically fine for a couple of years before "lifting" the varnish again. This blemish is entirely cosmetic and makes no difference whatsoever to the sound and playability of the instrument. Note the neck does not have a truss rod since the carbon graphite does not move. Looking to clear £850 + delivery - I imagine this sort of spec would be heading up to around £2000 today. Am in Plymouth and welcome to view/play by mutual arrangement.
