1.
I would have thought that stickers would peel off/look tatty after time.
Exactly. This is why I'm looking for advice regarding drilling the board and fitting clay dot inlays.
  2.
since they are going to be between the A 7 D strings I'd be more inclined to go with stickers on the surface. You'd probably still feel them a bit but they wouldn't get in the way of the strings and completely reversible should you want to return it to stock.
I'm planning to have them up the board at the usual places - 3, 5, 7, 9, two at 8ve, 15, 17 & 19 - so they'll be between all 4 strings and I've got no plans to revert it back to 'stock' at any point. I've come this far and I have absolutely no plans to sell it. If I was to do that it would be listed as a 'modified' fretless Vintage Modified Squier! Worst case scenario - I ruin the board by drilling holes in it.
  3. WITHDRAWN 23/05/11 Hi folks, Posting a bit of a feeler in respect of the above mentioned cab. It's a mid 80's Trace Elliot MKV 1518, 8ohms, 200 watts. The enclosure itself is sound but one of the plastic 1/4" input jacks has come loose and fell into the cab. Basically the voice coil has finally started to go and the driver produces an audible distortion/overdrive sound when played at any sort of volume. I've had a tech look at it and the upshot is the driver's finally given up the ghost so, instead of replacing the driver, I thought I'd see if there would be any interest out there in BC Land. I've really no idea what to put as a reasonable asking price but please feel free to make suggestions or an offer if you're interested. If there's no interest here I'll list it on e-bay/gumtree. I've added some pics of the front and the damaged input jack but if you need more feel free to ask. PLEASE NOTE: THE CAB IS LISTED AS SPARES/REPAIR EDIT 08/05/11 - It'a been mentioned that I should put an asking price otherwise the post will be pulled so in the spirit of not wanting to offend mods/admin lets say £70. Again I'm open to offers. Cheers, JDJ
  4. Hi BCers, I've been modding my Squier VM fretless and I'm looking for some info regarding drilling into an ebanol board as I want to add dot inlays. Basically my question is this - has anyone actually had the experience of drilling into an ebanol board? I realise the properties may be somewhat different to ebony or rosewood for example but can anyone offer first hand experience of this or perhaps offer some insight as to what problems, if any, might be encountered? Here's what I've done so far - I replaced the cheap crappy electrics with decent CTS & Switchcraft units, added an old .05 cap off a 50's Tele and went for a series/parallel push-pull set-up, fitted a Gotoh 301, added a fake grounding strip, tort pickguard, pull bar, Fender style JB knobs, bridge pup cover and, the most controversial item of all, a repro '62 Fender Jazz Bass headstock decal *ducks for cover* The only thing missing is the dot inlays on the face of the board, so this got me thinking about how it would actually look without going through the process of drilling the board and possibly hating the result (Or ruining the board!) As the saying goes, "Necessity is the Mother of Invention", so I came up with an idea - I got a bunch of paper circles from a hole punch at work and laid them on the face of the board and it looks pretty good! Fair enough they're really bright white but, as a rough indication of appearance, I think they work. I've added a "Before & After" comparison pic of the bass just to let you see what I've done. The "After" pic has the hole punch bits on the board so you can see what I mean. Thanks in advance for any and all info received. Cheers, JDJ
  5. Motorhead - Dog-Face Boy from 1995's Sacrifice. An epic driving track with a real sense of urgency about it. Just what's needed to drown out all the cackling 'hens' at work!
  6. BWAAAHAAHAAAAA! That's effing grotesque! He's also relisted it at £20 less than the last time with "JUST FOR SALE" added to the blurb. So it's "Just For Sale" as opposed to "Just For Laughing At"? 7. Bought mine brand new in 1986 and have never looked back. I still play through it to this day. Built like tanks but effing great big heavy things though! Fantastic! Have a bump on me :-) JDJ

    MEGAJAM!

Hi all. This is a fortnightly soire hosted by Ailsa Bates of Bullet VI/Misty Moon & The Hep Cats/Electric Avenue Band It's held in The Parlour Bar on Duke St in Leith and kicks off around 9pm. It can be a bit of a squeeze at times but it's good clean fun none the less! The backline is supplied so all you need is your instruments but if you're nice I'll let you play my bass. (assuming you're a bass player that is!) It's not a 'learn some songs then come jam them' situatiuon - this is by no means frowned upon but we do try and keep it all purely improvised. So far we've gathered a real eclectic mix of muso's covering everything from jazz through funk and rap to hard rock. We have a couple of fabulous guys on keys, some great horn players, fantastic guitarists, a whole host of drummers & percussionists and a plethora of vocalists Any and all musicians welcome - specially bass players! Hope to see some of you guys there tonite Cheers, Ian

  11.
I wanted to ask real players as well. Thats where talkbass.com comes in.
Talkbass.com?!! But this is Basschat! Only kidding! I almost bought a WAL in the mid 80's before I had Chris Larkin build my fretless Reacter (see my avatar) No regrets but if I had the money to spare I'd definately go for one of the old school WAL's. They just look and sound superb. Anyhoo, best of luck with your paper. JDJ
  12. I got in touch with Dave through the forum and, with his greatly appreciated assisatance, I ordered two cables Thursday night (14/04) and they arrived 11am this morning (16/04) Now that truly is awesome! My word, these cables are immense! I was recently looking in Guitar Guitar for speaker cables and they were asking a ridiculous amount for cables that couldn't hold a candle to OBBM's! Henceforth I shall only buy from and recommend Dave (and his cables!) to everyone I know! Thank you again Dave, Ian
  13. +1 for Pete Academy's Roland Micro Cube RX. I've had one for a while now and they're cracking little amps with loads of cool features and effects.

  15. Time to start a feedback thread methinks!
  16. Just this evening bought Pete's Trace Elliot Boxer 30 to go with it's big brother (I already have the Boxer 65 along with loads of other TE stuff. I'm just a sucker for Trace gear I guess!) and, as everyone has already said, he is indeed a great guy. Many thanks man, it was a totally painless and stress-free transaction and we hope to see you on Sat 9th at Parlour Bar for the jam session. Take care.
  17.
Should a GOTO bridge just fit into the Squire without any routing?
I recently fitted a GOTOH 203 bridge to my Squire VM Fretless with minimal work. The screws that come with the 203 are slightly thinner than the screws fitted to the stock Squier bridge so two toothpicks shoved firmly in each of the five holes in the body did the job and the screw holes matched up exactly with the holes already there. Another great thing with the 203 is that it has an extra two screws (7 mounting screws in total) at the leading edge giving it a more secure anchor and a larger area in contact with the body which (IMHO) increases sustain. You will of course have to drill these yourself. Cheers, JDJ

  20.
The very one! I bagged it on Evilbay and will be collecting on Saturday.
Nice one Plankspanker, I was watching the auction with interest. Just a pity I had no funds to bid with! Ah well, some day...
