I had a quick (unamplified) play and, apart from the god knows how old strings and uncomfortably high action, all seemed well. Pots were smooth and tuners also. It was reassuringly heavy and all seemed well. Hardware and frets were pretty manky, but appeared functional. I'm reluctant to divulge the price at present, as it was what [i]I[/i] would get it for... More than the £50 I had on me is all I can say..!

Just back from a local car boot sale. Only thing of interest was a P Bass; cherry sunburst, maple neck, in fairly good nick bearing in mind it appears to be a late 70's/early 80's. Serial number (S907*** on the headstock) suggests 79-81, CBS-era Fullerton (if various webpages are to be believed). Didn't get a pic, but I noticed body end truss rod access, screw in the middle of the scratchplate beneath the pickup, neck plate had a rubber 'grommet' beneath and only has a Fender script 'F' stamped on it. Guy is a regular at the car boot sale so I've got to know him over the last year or so, having bought stuff from him & even looking after his stall occasionally, and the price he quoted was what he would charge [i]me[/i] but I'm curious as to what one of these is 'worth'..?

Jon.[/quote] No haggling; my dad reminds me that he hadn't confirmed it as a Stage Series when he first called, so I had told him to just take on the off chance it was a Tradition Series. Of course, this is when I still thought it was a Telecaster... It was kinda late in the day, and I was astonished that it hadn't already been snapped up. Makes a nice change from folk asking full price for the usual Westfields and Nevadas, eh..?

My dad calls me from the local car boot sale this morning to tell me he's found a "Vester Stage Series Guitar", "red and white with 2 pickups". Sounds like a Telecaster so I tell him to snag it there and then. Meet up with him later to be presented with this - A quick tune up tells me it's working OK-ish. I'll order a set of the Legacy strings I've read so much about and give Mark/7String a call, see what he can make of it.

Andy Taylor hasn't been in the picture for years, pity that Warren Cuccurullo isn't likely to ever be involved again. Watching on the ITV+1 thing right now. Strikes me there must have been a whole lot of babysitting going on that nite...

Our eldest told us he wants to be a guitarist when he grows up... He grew up listening to Blackmore, Schon and Tremonti, and is currently obsessed with Zakk Wylde/BLS.

He reckons it made perfect sense, and improved the resonance appreciably.

A group of us all started playing a year or so previously (most of us taking up guitar..!) so Graeme decided he would go with the bass, having sold his original Washburn G1-V to acquire a Westone (something). We struck out in Glasgow so, deciding to head further afield, we found ourselves at Magnum Sound in Wishaw, Lanarkshire. There were a couple of possibilities, including an old Ibanez (can't remember the model) however, as soon as we found the 'P', we all knew how it was gonna go. The guy was a lil' reluctant to accept our best offer, but having 4 teenagers lurking around his shop for the best part of 2 hours, waving hard cash about and making a nuisance of themselves on a saturday soon wore him down... Graeme's original intention was to pimp it in a pseudo Billy Sheehan stylee (Badass, J bridge pup, brass nut etc) however events overtook us very soon after. Over the years since, I've had work done whenever I've had some spare cash, getting Egypts in Glasgow to source and fit a Badass, rewire her and fit a new nut ([i]11 years ago[/i]). Next stage will be getting a J bridge pup, and she really needs some new tuners. Some of those ultralight things would be ideal, as she has a very light body and can be a lil' neck heavy. Oh, and what did the guy eventually accept..? £200.00 :o'[/font] Since then, I've learned more about what makes a guitar or bass good/bad, and have to admit that she was (originally) a bit of 70's dog... The work that was done over the years has improved things, but I'm torn between completing the work that my brother had planned and leaving her 'as is'... On the one hand, any further mods (J pup at bridge) would pretty much destroy any value she still has [i]but[/i], I'm never gonna sell her and she doesn't get used as often as she deserves. I'll reach for my Bass Collection or use my mates Mex J (modded with Badass and SD's) if we're recording at his place before I'd use the P. Hmm, you've got me thinking now... I'll be letting 7String work his magic on her in the next few weeks (going from 40-100 to 45-105 and getting a proper service at the same time) so I'll see what she's like after that.

With you 100% Chris. The story of mine is elsewhere on BC, but this is a bass I will never sell as it was inherited from my brother when he died in1990. His intention was to Sheehan-ise her; J bridge pup, H/B at neck, Badass etc. Thankfully, this one was not a particularly good example when he first acquired her; low output, neck heavy, cranky tuners etc (might help to explain why we got her for £200.00...) so ideal for modding. Work done since has improved her no end, and I'll be looking at some lightweight tuners when funds allow, though I'm hoping to get her to 7String in the next few weeks for a once-over in the meantime.

Did someone say Sunburst and Tort Plate..? Oh well, in that case - My '72, upgraded (who said ruined..!) with new nut, pots, jack and Badass. Still undecided about fully honouring the original owners wishes by fitting a J at the bridge...
