Help - need something small, light, and loud!
lukeward2004 replied to lukeward2004's topic in Amps and Cabs
Well on thier own, I find them too lacking in definition, too thuddy, and just generally "missing" something - hard to describe but my ears just prefer a 2 or 3 speaker setup. I would use a 1x15 coupled with a 4x10 or similar for large gigs, that would sound brilliant, but sadly I need something small and portable for the type of things do now. -
^THIS What is important is the overall sound, not an individual sound. I always trusted my soundman/men, and they made my old function band sound fabulous because of it!

Thanks DiMarco, The Streamer is definately "the one" - Ive had it for nearly 6 years now and shes my go to bass for all things. Just feels like a natural extension of me, fits perfectly in both my playing style and love the sound, tons of growl when I need to cut through with a band! The BassPod is actually pretty decent, if given the time to spend adjusting and playing with it. Out of the box it was a pile of sh1te, but after the first few months playing with the setups and sounds I have a set of patches now for the SS2 that just work for me. Plus it makes my amp rack a recording setup as much as a live setup in one box!

Personally, I have always favoured 10" speakers having previously owned a 4x10, and now with my current cab, 3x10 (Epi UL310). My first cab was a 1x15 and although it was plenty loud, it was too bassy for my liking - not enough definition in the mids and highs, great for reggae and big, round thumping basslines but rubbish for anything else. I think the whole speaker size thing is totally dependant on other factors - such as the amp quality (if its in a combo), does the cabinet have a front or rear ported design, how well the cab is manufactured, is it a neo or traditional magnet, are they aluminium coned, does the cabinet have a tweeter and how sensitive is it etc etc etc.... Ultimately, only one thing matters (as with anything in this world) - does it sound good to your ears?

Hey guys, Im looking for a set of monitors for use at home, mostly when rehearsing but also possibly to run off the flat screen in the spare room. Space is limited in there so looking for a decent set of active speakers with a decent bass response. So far Ive come across the M Audio AV40's, any others worth considering? WIll be used with my MacBook Pro for rehearsing, predominantly, I liked the fact the M Audio has multiple inputs so could use it with the TV via Phono.

Thanks Guys - im still leaning heavily towards the GK MB212-II, hopefully my local music store has or can get one for me to try out. Either way I wont be selling on the big rig.... -
Warwick Owners, which strings and why?
lukeward2004 replied to Pinball's topic in Accessories and Misc
I use a Streamer Stage 2 and Streamer LX, both 5 'ers, with Elixir Nanowebs. Have done for years, the strings last AGES and sound fantastic, even after heavy use. TO give you an idea, I last changed my strings 4 years ago, only just changed them today Sounds good to my ears too -

Never been that impressed with MarkBass or Ashdown gear, FYI, when ive tried it. Maybe things have changed but as you say the punchy mids and singing treble just wasnt there last time I used them! -
Oh, go on then, here's my main setup...

Hey folks, Im considering getting a new amp for practises and small gigs, requirements are that it must be lightweight, preferably with neo speakers, and enough grunt to handle both home jams and rehearsals/gigs with a loud drummer. The reason ive been considering this is purely down to convenience - my current amp/cab setup is just a tad bit bulky, to fit into my car (BMW 520D saloon). The rack case I have with my POD/Poweramp etc in isnt too much of an issue, but the cab (Epifani UL310) is just an awkward shape and takes up tons of space in the rear of my car. Now Im looking at the Gallien Krueger MB212-II, im not a huge fan of single speaker cabs and want something that has the right balance between low, mids and clear trebles. Anyone got any experience with these cabs? Also anyone use Warwick basses with them, do they "fit" well together?

Hey folks, Havent been on here for a while, used to frequent these forums quite a bit - havent been active for a while however! Ive had a bit of a break away from the bass and gigging for the last 2 years, after the demise of my function band, but am now back at it with a vengeance since being asked to perform as part of a live band for a young and upcoming artist named Tara Deane. A bit about me - been an out and out bassist for almost 15 years, have done gigs all over the place both big and small, and I love anything with a groove. Generally speaking I am a fingerstyle player, and I play by ear. I can learn anything I put my mind to, although I am a little rusty on things so im spending what little free time I have getting my chops back (including going through various slap exersises I used to nail in Stuart Claytons guidebook). The past two years Ive been a competitive powerlifter, away from music, and generally just doing family things. Having seen many of my idols live, I am now ready to get stuck into something meaty, and am working with Tara Deane on her live act. I am also working with Rob Thom on some more originals stuff, but im predominantly playing and he is writing. Some recent stuff: Bear in mind I havent played for a while so im really sloppy!!! For the gearheads out there - I play Warwick basses, my main axe being a Streamer Stage 2 5 string. Also have a Streamer LX5 as a backup, all through a Bass Pod XT Pro > Aphex Aural Exciter>QSC poweramp and out through an Epifani UL310 cab. Looking forward to picking your collective brains and being part of this great community again!

FT: MTD Kingston Heir 5 String Bass NOW GONE

Hi Guys, Im really not playing this bass anymore, as I seem to be all set with my Warwick Streamer Stage 2 5er, so Ive decided to put this up for trade - Ideally looking for a small, lightweight but powerful cab (smaller than my Epifani UL310 but as loud as possible) or open to offers for anyone with interesting basses (prefer 5 string warwicks or a nice 4 string Jazz). Pics (hijacked from previous owner's thread): Strung with a new set of Elixir Nanowebs and a nice low action, its a great bass and doesnt deserve to sit on a stand not getting played. Its predominantly been my backup bass but my Warwick has never failed me with gigs so hasnt ever been used in anger. Specs can be found here: http://www.mtdkingston.com/basses/heir.htm Let me know, Cheers Luke
+1 love to play in a disco/funk band aswell as the one im in already. Cant seem to get one started though
Thanks for the comments - its nice to know we are doing something right, I run the band and I must say we are really struggling to get bookings at the moment. I guess the issue is how much we charge, half the band are professional musicians that wont go out for less than £150 a night, so it bumps our price up and thus folks cant afford to hire us. Equally the guys have to make a living - catch 22 situation! -

Thanks for the good words guys! Fretmeister - String Spacing wise, its actually fully adjustable to suit your taste (with obvious consideration to the neck profile etc), however I find that as it stands, its not too tight for a bit of slapping but also not so wide your fingers are stretching all over the place when you play fingerstyle. I have got the custom specifications somewhere, just need to dig them out and Ill see if I can get them scanned in, you have a PM anyway!
