1.
Thats gorgeous! good purchase
Thanks dude!
  2. Thanks mate, it's one of those marmite things, but this one might turn a few folks. (P.S. I hate marmite...) Eude
  3. The low B on this bass is silly considering the scale length?! The string gauges are 130 110 90 70 50 36 I think the higher 5 strings could be a shade lighter, maybe 130 105 85 65 45 30 They're custom wound by Netwtone strings for the shorter scale. Weight wise, it's sub 9 lbs, so VERY light for a 6 string, even with the weight ETS hardware on it. Eude
  4.
Nice! Intrigued to hear how that short scale works with a 6 string. Detailed review please
Well with excellent design and construction, strung with custom wound strings with heavier cores the string tension is pretty much the same as it is on my 33" basses. A more detailed review, as requested, will come in time, along with some sound samples, just a quick note though, it sounds like a rhinoceros sized modern jazz bass off the bat, enormous, crispy and punchy Eude
  5. Wow, I'm a lucky sod! I took delivery of another ACG bass today. A Salace E Type 6 String Headless Shortscale - that's a mouthful! Designed to be lightweight and superbly ergonomic without going down the weird shaped ergo guitar route. Not got much time just now, but here's the brief spec... 6 String tuned B to C 31.5" Scale Koa Top Spruce Core Mahogany Back 3 piece Ash Neck Cocobolo Fingerboard ETS Bridge Unit with 16.5mm spacing ACG Custom Headpiece ACH FB Pickups East Uni-Pre preamp So far I don't think I could be more impressed! Have a look... QUICK UPDATE! Here's some rough sound samples I've uploaded to Soundcloud. https://soundcloud.com/eudeboy/sets/acg-salace-sc-e-type-samples The bass is still amazing, by the way Eude
  6.
"more expensive basses have been built with better attention to detail, which is why string tension can be better" Nope sorry Eude can't agree with this generalisation, many expensive basses use pretty standard parts from Schaller, Hipshot etc etc. Their break angle being no different from an inexpensive bass.
OK, well the well cut and set up nut still stands, no? To be fair when I said "cheaper bass", I mean really cheap, an inexpensive instrument without branded hardware from Schaller, Hipshot etcs.
  7.
Does the string break angle over the nut (and therefore also at the bridge) have any effect on string tension? I have basses with headstocks at various angles but I don't know why there is such a range of difference between them.
Yup, break angle on the bridge saddle and at the nut makes a massive difference to how a string sounds and even feels in some cases. In my experience, more expensive basses have been built with better attention to detail, which is why string tension can be better. There's no reason why you couldn't buy a cheaper bass and strike it lucky though, or even take a duffer and have it tweaked and set up properly by someone who knows what they're doing and end up with a belter. Eude
  8. You could pop this into any bass and see if the ACG filter pre might be for you? http://basschat.co.uk/topic/271257-acg-dual-pickup-filter-pre-amp/page__p__2886357 That's the simpler SEQ version, but its still very flexible and would give you a taster of how the full thing works... Eude
  9.
I am in ... sputnik :-)
Very nice, is it a 32" model? Eude
  10. You know what, there's a fair bit of mid range adjustment available with the Standard Series preamp, you can get quite a wah like sweep. I'll try and get a quick recording to illustrate it this week. It obviously won't be nearly as wide a sweep as with an DFM filter preamp, and you can't effect the pickups independently, but it might peak your interest. You could always buy a Standard Series bass now and add a filter preamp once you've saved up a little, plus I'm fairly sure the Standard Series basses take a little less time to make than the Customs, especially if you pick a body from stock... Eude
  11. Congrats mate, that really is a beautiful bass! The EQ set up on these basses is a real eye opener, I have the same in my 4 string ACG and you can get a massive variety in passive using just the pickup selector. The active controls are really powerful too. Enjoy the bass, I know I would! Eude
  12.
In fairness I advised you to take this route many months ago in another thread...yet you still continue to resist.
Yup, me too...
  13.
I think this is what i'm looking for!!! is that available as a standard though, i doubt it is, so it means big bucks but still prolly worth it!!
The filter preamps aren't available in the Standard Series basses, but you could go for a Standard and an EQ01 separately, either direct from ACG, or if you can find a second hand one for sale somewhere, they do pop up every now and again. Eude
  14.
Custom is an option I'm considering. The SR1206 I tried was ok regarding the string spacing but the neck was a little bit to thick. It sounded very nice though.
Another, cheaper option, might be to find a bass you like at the bridge end, like the SR1206 you found and have the neck modified, or even just just get a new neck made for the body? I know Shuker have built custom necks for various purposes in the past. Cheers, Eude
  15. My suggestion would be to speak to ACG. I had Alan make me a 33" 6 string custom made with a 50mm nut and 16.5mm spacing, it was VERY comfortable, I've never really understood why 6 string necks have such wide nuts. Your average 5 string bass has a 45mm nut, yet 6 string basses seem to be 55mm and up! Why add a whole 10mm for a skinny little C string!?... As far as sub 16.5mm bridge spacing, I think you'll have to go for monorail style things like on the GV bass, or perhaps the Kahler unit mentioned above, although ETS also custom make all their hardware, so they would likely be able to produce something to your liking too. Best of luck, but I'm fairly sure if you can't find an Ibanez GV bass, custom will be your only option. Cheers, Eude
  16. Some dealers outside of the UK are popping up, but to be honest, bar having a few basses to try out, the custom process is still buying blind, even through a dealer, which as you mention, would add a mark up. There's been several very happy customers on here, there's bound to be someone near you who might be willing to let you check their bass out? If you ordered something and weren't happy with it, as long as you hadn't gone mental with the custom options, I don't think you'd struggle to move it on in the classifieds... Eude
  17. Give Ashdown a shout, their customer service is amazing!

    Approved.
  19. Well that's more than a bit nice! Congratulations mate :-) Eude
  20.
Would you keep me posted too if this happens? I'm gassing for one of these badly I'm only a short way away in Sutton.
Will do matey, whether or not a Retro One10 will be there I'm not sure, I guess it depends if Merton can hold his resolve. There will be a some G3 Compacts though, possibly a Retro Two10 and a fair bit of Ashdown gear...
  21.
The Super Compact is certainly accurate within its design bandwidth (37Hz-4kHz) but it isn't hi-fi in the full-range studio monitor sense, like the Big Baby 2. And the Super Midget is a great alternative to the Big Baby 2 if you want that full-range accurate sound but need the smallest cab possible.
I was going to mention the midget. I've not tried one personally, although I did hear a G2 one a couple of years back and was very pleasantly surprised at how much it filled the fairly large room I was in, astonished is probably closer actually. Based on what I've heard of the G3 Compact, I imagine the new Midgets are most impressive! Eude
  22.
I've never actually made a BC bash so it's about time I managed to get to one... Let me know if and when you guys are organising it for and I'll hopefully be along
Well, it's not an 'official' bash, just two or three of us in a wee rehearsal space, the bigger bashes would let you meet a lot more folks and try a lot more gear out, but seeing as you have something quite specific, it's probably a very good opportunity for you if it'll fit. Eude
  23.
Sounds promissing with a more balanced sound... Let me know about the mini bash. Anywhere I can get to on a train easilly is doable
Well of we do do it in Surrey, I'll be driving from near Sanderstead train station, so if you can get to me, I can drive from there. Eude
  24.
The compact is a 12 isn't it? I was mostly tempted by these because of the tiny size... I appreciate there is always going to be a compromise and it's not going to sound like an 8x10, but I'm really looking for the lightest, smallest rig I can possibly get away with. I sold my excellent Purple Chili 112s and got a berg 210, which is easier to manoeuvre around on a trolly, but a pair of these would be even easier. I only really need a rig for rehearsals and as a monitor at gigs, but as it's my sole sound source at rehearsals I want it to sound good and full, with enough bottom end.
They are a 12, but they're not exactly huge, and they're incredibly light. I have a mini rig, 2 x 1x10 Ashdown Mi10's and a G3 Compact drawing 8 ohms from my amp was louder than the two little cabs together drawing 4 ohms. The newer G3 cabs don't have the barky abrasive sound I heard in the older stuff, much more balanced. Might be worth investigating... Merton and I will be having another mini-bash in darkest Surrey or possibly South Croydon again soon if you want to pop along to have a go/listen? Eude
  25.
Thanks for that, always good to get some first hand knowledge from people actually using the setup. I think I'm going to have to hear a set for myself... I worry a bit as a lot of barefaced users seem to be the P bass / valve amp type guys and I'm much more of a HiFi deep and bright tone kinda guy, no break up, very clean sound. I'm using Glockenklang / Bergantino currently. I know barefaced do an excellent trial period but I'd feel very cheeky sending stuff back they've made specifically to fullfil my order. I see from your location you're in kent... any gigs in london coming up I could pop along to and hear the rig for myself in a real band situation?
I heard both the Retro 210 and the G3 Compact recently, with an all valve Ashdown CTM-30 and an Ashdown RM-800. If you want HiFi, I reckon you should probably look to the G3 Compact. Eude
