1. As a drummer... Hitting drums less hard yields a different sound from them. There's no denying that fact. However, a good drummer should be able to get a usable sound at any "level". One band I play in are quiet, and also very dynamic, so I use light sticks and sometimes hot rods, and I play with a lighter touch. I can't get the same beautiful wack out of my snare as when I play hard rim shots all the time with my rock band, but who cares?! It still sounds good.
2. that looks like a sh*t load of fun!
3. i want to try some new strings. I play 6 strings and like to have a nice heavy B string, at least 135. That sounds pretty specific to me, so i'd like to narrow my search down on strings direct by "bass strings" and "6 string sets" and then "order by guage" or maybe order by price or whatever. The only sub categories on this site seem to be based on brands rather than actual requirements, and the sorting function doesn't work. I'm finding it extremely frustrating! Am I using the site in the wrong way or is it just crap?
4. If you're the type of guy to regularly subject himself to jam-nights, you probably do think your clip-on looks cool! Sorry, just joking Dave, whatever works for you
5.
I don't think a clip-on is as uncool as a strap-on!
well you could whip them off a lot quicker that's for sure
6.
Or a clip on tuner and a volume control on your bass *broken record*
I've not used a clip on tuner so I don't know about it's multitude of practical shortcomings, but I would imagine it makes your bass look less cool
7. yeh my (latest) bass will stay in tune for weeks of gentle practising, but as soon as I start really playing I will inevitably knock a string out. you need to be able to tune on mute at gigs, and that's why you need a tuner pedal!
8. he slammed the door on her hand?!? That's your mum! I would suggest several courses of action but this is a public section of the forum
9.
Ah feck. You're right. Well I'm trying to persuade her to let it go.
Well, good luck. If not 2nd hand Peavey PAs come up quite often
10.
I think having a mom with a PA is pretty cool.
Indeed! to be honest if this was me i'd have bought my mum a replacement by now! You don't really think you don't have anything to do with it? Even if you didn't realise it at the time, you kind of assured your mum it would be fine, which IMHO makes it your responsibility. Sorry!
11. I like to look at it from a production/mix point of view. When you're in the studio, you might use layers of guitars to add or subtract depth and dynamics. Also in the studio your bass would normally be compressed and the level automated (boost for chorus or heavy riff or whatever). I try to replicate my approach in the studio using effects. So, instead of having to have a 2nd guitarist, I create a "thickening" effect with distortion, some modulation, and some EQ. Instead of hiring a soundman to learn all of our songs, I can use pedals to boost the low end where it's needed in the sounds, and likewise to compress the bass and automate the levels if needed. On top of all that I love to create weird noises. Some of the music I play is a bit atmospheric, and while a low end drone can be very nice, it gets a bit boring after a while. My whammy and feedback loop help me enter much higher registers. Much like the high C on my 6 string basses, I feel it gives me extra room to play and be melodic in these atmospheric situations.
12. It sounds like a great opportunity for some experience and networking. Why not just do it for fun? It's a shame if you thought you were creatively involved, and obviously that's going to sting at first, but i'd just try to move on and take the opportunity you have.
13.
No you don't.
Well, not if you're not gigging. I tune up by ear at home but that's no good if my guitarist is tuned slightly out with me. EDIT: Sorry, I shall stop posting in here!
14.
I like a tiny bit of octabass on a fretless, haven't felt the need for much else.
go on, try a bit of dirt, you'll never go back!
15. lol, how many times will people ask this. What is "need" in music anyway? You need a pedal to tune up. Then you need a pedal to reign in any very harsh peaks. A pedal to bring out those glorious high mids and one to boost your booming lows. Another couple of pedals for your funk, fuzz, filter, phaser, flanger... Of course you need some imagination as well otherwise you'll be standing behing a bunch of great bass tones and thinking "I only wanted one good sound"
16. I would use the amp which has your favorite pre-amp. Take the effects send from that amp to the input of the effects unit. Then one output of the effects unit goes to the effects return on your favorite amp. Another output of the effects unit goes to the effects return on your 2nd amp (bypassing this pre-amp). Simple?
17. Well I've made my first attempt at a sale on here recently and although there are no takers it's going quite well. I've had advice on pricing without drama, i've found out some more about my bass and some very friendly discussions with interested parties. Absolutely no low-ball offers even though i've been trying to encourage it. What's going on?!?
18. Yeh I would say option 1. You will want to play with the order of your wah/filter/dirt until you find what works, but having these at the start of your chain is probably the best option.
19.
Finding a good room where you can let rip is (that you can afford) is a complete swine.
Sorry, yes, I forget how lucky I am!
20. I've been using real reverb from my room on vocals recently and it sounds so much better! If you have a "roomy room" it's probably cheaper than any hardware. But obviously there are free plug-ins such as 5i's recommendation
21. I'm not sure if I can do any test or anything. I could do sound samples but my pre-amps are probably rubbish and obviously the sound source is subjective etc. I saw them recommended in Tape Op and decided they were too cheap to not try
22. yeh the matched pair of bullets is what I have. I've been using them as overheads and they're great. I actually prefer them to the condensors in the Red Audio drum set.
23.
check out karma mics http://www.karmamics...bon-Microphone/ Also if you can get hold of a SM7, I know people how use that for loads of different things.
I was trying to remember their name yesterday. I have a pair of the bullet mics and they really are amazing for the money IMO
24.
Wait till you need a decent multicore and patchbay....
I make do with my cheap sh*te! Although I did get a decent multi-core/loom on wheels from basschat. As I don't have sound proofing, the only way to disconnect the mics from the noise of my computer is with metres of cables!
25. I'm actually quite interested in the box as a whole. Why not make a sale thread "three pedals in one, will split if needs be"?
