1. I took the in out bits off the board when I built my own to fit n a flight case I got for free. They are a handy feature.
2. Ok, ok, stop turning the thumbscrews I've just ordered one!
3. I do! I'm not at home but I'll measure when I get back. I modded the hell out of mine with one of those hobby tools. I fitted a big power supply in the top right of the board and wired it to a kettle lead plug. I removed the cable tidy bar to in the end to make way for more pedals. In the end I had 5 boss stomps, g50 wireless and an expression pedal. I kept the foam padding in the bottom to route the cables under. Why did I get rid? Those clips at the front are rubbish and I ended up shortening a bungee cord hook thingy and looping it through the padlock holes. However, that didn't even work in the end and it opened up and spilled my pedals. My Boss pedals shrugged it off, would your B3 with its LCD screens?
4. That sounds pretty nifty through my iPad.
5. Im after consolidating some bits on my board and I reckon I'm gonna pull the plug and go for a B3. However, when ever I come to checkout I consider adding on the behringer bdi and then questioning whether the BDI effect in the zoom is as good. Anybody got any experience or comparison? Also, anyone with a B3 go on and buy the expression pedal, it doesn't seem great on the b2.1u and I'm wondering if I can plug in my passive exp. pedal I have lying around at home? Thanks in advance, CM
6. G50 for me. Better construction IMO than the g30- its metal over plastic if I remember correctly, greater range so I know I won't exceed it's limits. I've been to a few festivals now where there has been quite a few wireless devices around and never had any interference problems. I choose a random channel to stop me crossing over with people who probably just leave it on channel 1 or the highest channel. Cabletone is a nice touch too as it does stop your sound being overly bright, I roll on for a 10m cable.
7. I use either a USB interface into my mac and use GarageBand or amplitube. If I'm away from home I use an irig into amplitube on either m iPhone or iPad. There are free practice apps too, I think one is a GK app. A pair of closed-back headphones provides enough quality- I find cheap earbuds cut too many frequencies.
8. The best thing is to have a play. I tend to put modulation after OD/FUZZ/Distortion, however I like putting an octave pedal before the OD and give it the cleanest signal for tracking. Tuners can go at the beginning for the end, my wireless has a tuner out so that runs my tuner signal. The consensus used to be that the tuner is best at the front for the cleanest signal but a recent debate showed people had put them all over the place with no problem. What effects are using the MFX for?
9. I totally understand where you are coming from. I currently prefer playing my Squire VM Jazz over my MIA Custom P at the mo. Next pay packet it is then, especially as I'm looking at a hefty promotion on Friday. Thanks for the advice!
10. On second thoughts - forget the comment about the K&K... the DB is more important at the minute!
11. Wow, thanks for the responses. Having bought many guitars, of all types, in the past I have one that is just sweet so I am willing to invest time into research and my impatience is partly due to my eagerness to getting going. I've played on a couple when I've done the sound for a beer fests (as recent as Baldock Beer Fest this weekend past). I got told that the only pickup to go for is a K&K - any truth in this? I googled it and there are a range of models so think it was a very general comment.
12. Thanks for the advice Gareth. I can wait/ sell some kit and get £1000 together. I'll add your advice to the top post.
13. Hi all, I've been trawling this section of BassChat for a while now as I am desperately after pushing myself to buy a double bass. Something that surprised me is that there is no sticky for beginners' buying advice. There is clearly a whole load of knowledge on here, from the insanely detailed to general advice. I'm not a beginner to music - but I am to buying a DB in fact, the school I teach at has just started cello and violin lessons and I keep grabbing the tiny cellos and having a go - the sound is addictive so, I WANT IN! I'm after adding the DB to my arsenal of instruments (guitars/ BG/ drums etc.) and have a few questions. Firstly, where am I going to use it? I'm in a rock/pop covers band at the moment but the DB could really add a twist on stuff. Love a bit of jazz/ blues etc. Do I go for a 3/4 or 4/4? I understand there are different shapes too. I've seen on gear4music and Thomann that for under £500 you could get DB, case, pup - is this too good to be true? That is round about my starting budget. Any advice will be gratefully received, I hope that the resulting posts will supply enough info to get a sticky together to help people like me who have caught the bug. Advice I've picked up so far:

I understand that cheaper (read poorer quality) instruments (in general) don't have the sustain/ 'voice' etc. that a expensive (read higher quality) instrument has however I am not going to be in the position of being a session DB player in the studio. So, do I really need that level of quality when it probably isn't going to be heard?
I've seen the comments about going Euro over Chinese
To hold off and find a better secondhand one over a new poorer quality one - not ideal as I can't really wait/ have the time to collect.
Hybrid basses - ones that has a solid wood top with laminated back and sides, are a lot less problematic when it comes to amplifying onstage.
£500 budget (all in) is unrealistic for a DB that you want to progress with.
3/4 is the closest to a standard size for an adult that you will find, get a 3/4 if you're in any doubt. Don't worry about the shape.
About the Double Bass by Peter Tyler. You will find it very useful to give you a good understanding of the bass and you will be more knowledgeable in your search. It will cost £20 but that will be a very good investment. Send Peter an email at www.tylerbasses.co.uk
The Hybrid Thomann 22 has come recommended several times
14. I have a mag300 210 combo for sale - It's loud enough with a bit of PA support but with it being 8ohm you can bang another 210 underneath it. PM if you want to talk numbers - willing to let it go for a steal.
15. I prefer the bf2 to be honest. There was something about the bf3 that I just didn't like. It felt too 'digital' - don't ask me to quantify that but I like the sweep of the bf2 even though the bf3 has a dedicated bass input. My bf2 is unmodded btw.
16. G50 user here and have had no problems with mine apart from the supplied cable crapping out after 9 months. I played hell up with line 6 as it happened during a gig (when only drums and bass were currently playing an intro riff) and they refunded me the £25 I spent on a replacement (with uprated bits such as neutrik silent jack plug and a longer better quality cable - 54cm to 70cm)
17. I love mine had a few amps from Ashdown starting at the Evo blue, then the MAG and now I'm on the Klystron head with the Neo Classic cabs. Love the tone and it doesn't half move some air. For our set that goes from Led Zeppelin's 'Rock n Roll' to Duran Duran's 'Rio' it has everything I need. The footswitch allows me to punch in some grit, re shape the EQ, level stuff out with the very usable compressor and thicken the sound with the sub-octave. Granted you can get it with other systems but I've just found it so much easier to dial it all in. The only tweak I'd make would be to swap either the 210 or the 115 for the same cab to run 2x 115 or 2x 210. Can't decide which I like more on its own - keep taking the two to band practice and only play through one at a time to pick...
18. Apparently the build on the VM's is as good if not better than the MIMs.
19. That T40 looks nice but there is just something about it that doesn't click with me. Stoopid as that probably sounds to you!! That Yamaha seems an excellent piece of kit but is out of my price range. Saving for a wedding you see... I'm moving closer and closer to the Squier VM Jazz. I haven't read a bad review yet and for £238 it's yet to have a competitor! Gauntlet thrown?
20. Well my P has a P/J configuration so it's been interesting that people have brought up this as a factor. Lots of info to chew and research- thanks for all your responses. I will consider secondhand - my MIA P was secondhand and was a custom job by a sessionist up in Scotland. Plays beautifully. I am a guitarist as well being a bassist (hides for cover) I don't know whether that will set me in better stead for going to 5. The 4 string variety of the 70s J by squire will set me back £238 - I mean that is just silly! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UIuPs7hmAY This guy does a good job of an overview.
21. Is there that much of difference between 4 and 5 stringers? Obviously I'll go in to a shop and try etc. Got to admit in trying to keep things similar yet having something slightly different the VM range does seem to be calling. My MIA is very similar to that Matt Freeman model although mine has a P/J pick up config and Kahler bridge - a little too similar!
22. I see what you mean, maybe by back up, I actually mean another bass that I could use if my other one packs up...
23. I've got my MIA P Bass as my main and only bass! The other night whilst gigging it suddenly dawned on me, "What if I dropped it, broke it, swallowed it, lost it in another dimension..." It was an important gig where I would be unable to find a replacement quickly. I was going to buy a new watch (Stowa Flieger) but at £500+ notes I'll wait for the £ v Euro to be a bit better. Are there any gems out there that are good value for above money?

I want something different to a P-Bass I think as I already own one.
I don't want fretless, I'd love one but not as a backup bass having not really played one before.
I'm not impartial to trying more strings.
I don't want any awkward uncomfortable shapes that look amazing but are an effort to hold let alone play!
No need for a case as I have one
Could be active or passive. My P is active with EMGs.
So far I've considered: Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass 5 String - Andertons have it for £282 (I have £25 cash back and £10 in loyalty to collect) - I've heard they are really well made for the price.
