1. Hi Fraser, If you had the signal cutting out and then got it back by wiggling the volume pot then something in there is loose - I'd guess a fractured or poor quality solder joint. The more you wiggle something that's not making contact properly, the looser it's going to get and eventually the chances are that even wiggling it with a club hammer isn't going to make the contact. It would be worth getting someone to at least look at the amp before giving up on it.
 2.
Play whilst your neighbours are having a BBQ then they ask if you can let them know in advance so they can organise their mates around to coincide with practice. Atleast thats what happened the first time we had a practice at my dads. Legally though there is not they can do is there or has that changed?? We used to alternate living rooms and only had the rozzers out once and that was only to ask for my MOT because they couldn't believe the car was legal It was them that told us until 11:30pm there was nothing anyone could do.
It's 11:00pm here. In my 'ideal world' though, it's far easier to get along with the neighbours than put them in a position where they're getting on the phone to the council all the time. I soundproofed a room at the last place I lived at and got the neighbours on either side involved in a game of "can you hear it yet?" that generated a lot of good will and laughter.
 3. Aha! You'll get a significant drop if they're both SDs. If you mix SDs with non SDs you need to reverse the polarity of the SD pickup - your white wire needs to be treated as an earth and your black wire needs to be treated as a live.
 4.
For Xmas and to my great surprise my young son and daughter bought me a bass guitar ( my daughter probably got sick and tired of me nicking her six string school acoustic to pick out old punk numbers . It was cheap obviously as I wouldn't have wanted them to spend any money on the old man but the guitar they picked seemed nice enough. An acoustic/electric Lindo bass. Thing is I am getting a lot of unwanted sound from the strings as I pull my fingers off the fret. It seems to me that the height of the frets are quite high which means I have to press hard to make the string come into contact with the fret board and when I move my fingers from a note played it seems to make unwanted additional noises. Thus far I haven't plugged into an amp and used the active pick ups will this help iron out the sound? Also is this a problem with Lindos? I have heard a few people say the frets seem a mm or two too high.
It's perhaps a mixture of things. Part of it might be technique - controlling a bass string can be a little awkward to begin with, partly due to it's thickness compared to a guitar string - that'll come naturally given enough practice though. If you are struggling to fret the strings then it may pay you to get someone to take a look at the neck for you - bass guitars 'out of the box' often need a little tweak to get them into good 'playing shape'.
 5. Matresses seem a popular choice Not sure how you guys setup, but if your bass rig is facing the offending wall then it might be worth shifting stuff around so that it's facing a wall that doesn't matter. Don't know what rig you have but it might help if you could raise the height of your cab - you'll need less volume to hear yourself if the cab is at ear height.
 6.
Duly noted, I'll get my meter out.
You could get dead posh and try mounting a little preset in the end of your jack plug - you'd be able to do some tweaks as well that way...
 7.
Hi, I`ve just restarted my METAL band, and decided to use an Ibanez SR300 I`ve had kicking around as a spare, as I don`t want to use the Fender, and my old Washburn 5 string is in a bad way (!), but I`ve strung it BEAD as I need the low notes. The problem is that when trying to set the intonation on the low B the string,it is still coming up sharp ( on the 12th fret ) even though the saddle is all the way back, there is no more room to move ! Is there any solution to this, I`m using new rotosounds and the B is .130 gauge, would different string size help,or should I just forget it and play the higher notes...>!!!!!!!
String diameter can shift intonation. Low note intonation can be a problem - try a heavier gauge than a 130 - that'll at least move you in the right direction...
 8.
Oh that's right. He apologised about the smiley after I made the trolling comment. I'm sorry my lack of time machine is distressing you. No he didn't say I was a rabid fanboy. He said I sound like one. That's ok then. That's not an insult is it? Sounding like rabid fanboy is positively a compliment. To be honest you sound like a complete tool. I am not saying you are one. You just sound like one.
Suit yourself.
 9.
Nope. I'm saying people who use phrases like this are... "Meanwhile, back in the real world." "Unsubstantiated rabid fanboy."
"Meanwhile, back in the real world." - he missed the smiley off the end, he stated that quite a bit back. "Unsubstantiated rabid fanboy." - from a totally different poster to the first comment you took offense to. The very next sentence was "I'm not calling you a rabid fanboy, by the way". IMHO you are taking offense where none was intended mate.
 10.
Don't apologise, it's nothing you have done. It's a Basschat phenomenon where a few trolls have decided to have a pop for no reason. In this one they have decided that electricity doesn't exist. In another thread they will deny wood has any effect. It's sad really but it does go on here a lot.
One of the big strengths of BassChat is that people from diverse musical backgrounds, experience and interests can come here and talk openly and freely about various musical subjects. So, lots of different opinions from lots of different people with lots of different takes on the subject under discussion. Are you saying that anyone who has an opinion that is different to yours is a troll?
 11.
we could very nearly do an accurate cover
I found it hard enough to remember everyones names in a 7 piece band - most of them were called "Erm..?". Only way I'd stand a chance in your band would be to have them all barcoded!
dream band to play with - guitars, vibraphone, drums, bass, choir, string quartet, brass quintet. reality - guitars, vibraphone, drums, bass string quartet, brass quintet. all we're missing is a choir
"...Tubular Bells..."
 13.
love that track with the theremin. isnt it just a shame that as a bass player, one must play bass all the time - i mean, in bands where i was playing something in the upper register, one can swap much more easily ie. play a uke instead of guitar, a harmoica, ... there are certainly many bass players who in fact are multi-instrumentalists. or is there anyone here who would swap bass with somebody else in the band during a set?
I used to play in a band that swapped instruments during a song. It was a seven strong folk band and it took longer to choreograph that bit than it did to learn the damn tune in the first place. Great fun to do though.

 16.
Try soaking the chrome bits in a diet coke bath. My G-3 bridge went from this: Not perfect by any means, but a damn sight better than it was. Remember to rinse and dry thoroughly before putting it back together
...or wasps will chase you...

 18.
I'm still waiting for mine, and following all this talk of modding with interest. But since they're now collectors' items, I might keep it all original - I'm not as young as I used to be and need to start thinking about investing for my old age
FFS!
 19.
Is rust usually fairly easy to come off?
The heavily oxidised bits come off quite easily witha bit of elbow grease but you'll get 'pitting' left in its place. Ironically, what you'll end up with is the 'roadworn' look that many people complain they can't get on fresh chromed hardware...
 20.
Mrs Raggy got me one of them, seriously handy.
That's a seriously mistimed post directly after Iain's turd twister one...

 22. We are just talking about three pots, a jack socket and a few scraps of wire here right?
 23.
OK, here's the deal. I've just bought an EHX Memory boy, but the full amount of delay is only available with the expression plugged in, ut I want to keep that for the Boss SYB5. My idea is this, build a device that fakes the extra impedance delivered by the EV5, to 'fool' the MB into thinking I've still got it plugged in. I'm guessing a TRS jack and a fixed value resistor, any thoughts on what value works for this sort of application? Also would this actually work?
Having had a quick browse of the instruction manual it certainly sounds as though this would work. Best way of finding the correct value resistor would be to use the EV5 to get the appropriate level of delay, then unplug it and measure the resistance between the tip and (I'm guessing here) the sleeve of the EV5. The 'low tech way' would be to take the bottom off of the EV5 and take a punt on the value of the resistor needed based on pot value and how far round it's gone to give the effect you like.
 24.
Aye I'll find out this Sunday what's happening. Hopefully I'll be able to clean up the rust fine any suggestions on a best method??
The rust is probably through the chrome plate so you'll not have a huge amount of joy there I imagine. Something like Brasso perhaps?
 25.
I must have had 12 or more different Precisions over the years (hell, I still have 5 now!), and the one thing I've learnt is you can't generalise that all US P basses are great, or all MIM's are substandard. In my experience, it just doesn't work like that. I've had some dogs in my time (and that includes a 75 US P bass, and a US '62 Re-issue). I've also played some awful MIM and MIJ ones, too. You really do need to try before you buy... If you blindfolded someone and gave them a MIM, a MIJ, a US, and a Squire (and they were all well setup), I bet most people wouldn't be able to identify which was which...
+1 I think people tend to forget that Fender gear was all designed with mass production in mind (hence the bolt-on necks, modular electronics etc.) Anything mass produced is going to produce a few dogs along the way.
