1.
Why so long between detection and banning?
I wanted to make totally sure of the facts first, and that took a little time to do for various reasons. Once I managed to plough through the detail, it was easy and done in a matter of seconds. Something that did come to light during this was that the person in question had been sending offensive PM's to at least one person. If anyone got one of these then just delete it, he won't be replying.
 2.
How can you wade in to a forum discussion?
Slowly and with much deliberation.
 3.
It's a bit annoying when seasoned members criticise someone for posting about something that may have been talked about many times in the past. Short of trawling through every thread to check, how are newer members to know, it's been talked about? Forums need new blood and if someone wants to ask which strings you prefer, I will partake in that discussion because they are looking for feedback. I'm not going to tell them to go and look at such and such a thread because it's all been done before. Let's have more understanding that not everyone knows what's been posted before
+1 I'm still answering questions about impedance that have been asked, and subsequently answered, hundreds of times before. It takes me two seconds to answer, or I can spend five minutes hunting down the previous time it was answered, copying and pasting the link and coming up with a sarcastic retort. I'd rather spend the two seconds and help. Things move on as well. The 'right answer' three years ago might have been superseded by a much better answer today. At one point, the 'best setup for metal' would have been a Hofner violin bass, flatwound strings and a Vox amp.
 4.
He mentioned it once, but I think he got away with it ...
I think he probably whispered it.
 5.
Ha ha. I got banned for calling someone a moron. I got one warning before that, for posting "aggressively" though I was never told what in particular I posted. It took a more of concerted effort to stick to "moron" to be honest.
I didn't know that, but it was about four years ago. You're still here, it's never been mentioned since and that's great.
 6.
Apologies for duplicating any previous questions but: 4ohm cab + 4ohm cab driven by a single 4ohm amp. How do I do it?
With difficulty. Two 4Ω speakers sat on the back of an amp will present a 2Ω load - not good. The only way of doing it will be to have an adaptor lead made up that'll put the two 4Ω cabinets in series. That'll give you an 8Ω load (if it's a valve amp then you might need to set it to 8Ω, if it's a transistor amp then it doesn't matter). The downside is that you're going to get far less volume as the amp is expecting to run into a 4Ω load and you'll probably not gain very much as a consequence.
 7.
I don't think they do standard 3-ply types, but they focus on single ply special designs, afair.
Ah. It was a long time ago and you're talking to a man who can't remember what he had for dinner last night.
 8.
If nobody else thinks this is odd, I'll get back to polishing my tinfoil hat.
Leave it crumpled for a little while until I check this out for you.
 9.
"Could you get a price on shipping to Germany please. And give me a €uro price, as I'll be doing an IBAN transfer in Euro. Thanks." Same user as modulus, but on a sadowsky...
Andy, bear with me a second and I'll PM you.
 10. IBAN is an acronym for International Bank Account Number. All it does is add a few extra digits to the sort code and account number to ensure the transfer goes to a bank in the right country, they're pretty standard in foreign transfers these days.
 11. The other solution, albeit not very elegant, is to click on the little 'lightswitch' icon on the typing field toolbar and then hit 'Quote'. Firefox isn't Government security favoured as it's open source - it's a bit too easy to 'look under the bonnet'.
 12. Lets see if I can cover some of these points without crossing the confidentiality line. The list of 'missing posters' I keep seeing contains hardly any 'banned' members. They are, with a couple of exceptions, simply members who have decided to move on and are welcome to return any time they like - they're not banned and their accounts are still working. As for 'banning', the vast majority of posters never need warning. It takes a real concerted effort to get banned here and, with the number of clear warnings along the way, claims of 'surprise', 'shock' and 'horror' when it happens can best be described as a little disingenuous. Mods 'saying nothing' about moderated members has always been the standard here. A private conversation between a moderated member and one, or more, mods will always be treated as confidential. On the subject of 'aggressive' posts in OT, it's almost a cyclical thing. OT becomes a testosterone powered cesspit and it leaves the Mods in a lovely position where if we do nothing... we get slated, and if we do something... we get slated. So we have to strike a balance and put up with the criticism until it settles down again, usually when the weather gets warmer. Personally, I blame tight fitting underwear.
 13.
I didn't know there was a rule or aspersions would be cast for opening a post "just after midnight, on a Saturday morning." Of course, that's my mistake, I should have realized that the time the post was made was really the time the giant metal Donkey Harness over the Ric's bridge pickup is supposed to be praised as a work of art worthy of being exhibited in the Louvre.
I can't quite decide if that's humour of some description or sarcasm.
 14.
Do you think it is better than Spotted Dick?
That'd depend if you've got an allergy to penicillin or not...
 15.
I write under my own name.
You sound awfully familiar, have you ever been to England? EDIT: Oh, and the Iranian IP address you're using isn't a particularly good disguise.
 16. First thing I'd do is change the battery in my bass (if it's an active). Next up would be to beg\borrow another amp and see if that does the same thing. Once those are out of the way then you'll have a much clearer idea of where the problem is.
 17. How about... http://basschat.co.uk/topic/247112-scratch-it-original-scratchplates-pickguards-to-your-design/
 18. One band I play with is primarily a functions band so we only do a handful of pub gigs each year, usually at the same pub. They put up posters, have flyers on the bar, do the chalkboard thing and put it on their facebook page weeks before we're due to play and the place is packed all night. Those gigs give us an opportunity to 'market' ourselves to prospective clients and we often see previous clients in the audience long after we've played their function, which is always nice. The other band is more of a pub band and not as well known locally. Some pubs put the effort in and fill the place, others don't do as much and reap less from the experience. When we get one like that we work with them on follow up gigs and that little bit of handholding turns an 'OK' night into something far more profitable for all concerned. No, we shouldn't have to advise businesspeople how to run their business, but sometimes they need a little nudge to set them on the right course.
 19. When I look back at the rehearsal rooms we used to frequent when I was a youngster, certain things have improved. Cigarette burns in the carpet, freezing cold in winter, boiling hot in the summer and toilets that'd cause raised eyebrows at Porton Down have (generally) been eradicated now. The one 'constant' is that the gear is often well past it's prime and, if it's not, it'll generally be faulty. Unfortunately, in the same way that you don't have to stop a hire car before putting it in reverse, equipment is mistreated. We just hire a room now and take our own equipment.
 20. An SR505 comes in at just over 7lb which is about as light as you can get. I don't generally worry too much about weight, but I really notice that difference if I change to a Fender JB during the set.
 21. Most people seem to start on a 4 and then progress to a 5 which they'll either love or hate. If you've already gone down the 5 route for the extended scale it offers and the only problem you are having is neck width then I'd echo MattP and recommend looking at an SR505 - super skinny neck and a pretty ridiculous price, even more so if you can find a used one.
 22. As long as the lights in the factory unit don't dim when you switch your rack on there's no problem.
 23.
I'm not good enough to play a lot of the stuff I actually want to play and/or write. I'd say that for someoen who has been playing for the same length of time as me (just under 5 years) I'm about average...
If it's any consolation, I can remember trying to play a particular piece of music when I was a relative newbie to bass and gave it up as impossible. A few years later I found the cassette (remember those? ) and tried again - nailed it on the second play. I didn't think much had changed in those intervening years, but it had - slowly and surely without consciously realising it.
