just npticed that FAL owned Roost. Now Roost was good kit iirc. FAL stuff was also rebadged as RSC. Anybodt else remember them ?
I vaguely remember Roost but I don't recall RSC. I do remember Linear though, and FAl and RSC seem to have derived from them - http://www.chambonino.com/work/linear/info1.html
Oh I remember the Ohm stuff too, I thought it was 80s though so I didn't mention it. My dad had an Ohm for a while he traded it in for a Polytone Minibrute 1! Weren't the ohm cabs concrete lined or something? - they were very heavy iirc...
I think they only just squeezed into the 70's (1978/1979?). As for the cab construction, I seem to recall the OHM rep enthusiasticaly telling me that they were built of a new material which they used a computerised cutting system to shape. Probably an early CNC setup and MDF.
Holy crap, you don't mean you're into... folk music, do you??
Well I don't look good in torn t-shirts and studded leather trousers... The serious point I was trying to make is that rhythm doesn't always need to be tied to particular drums - especially if there aren't any in the first place! In the absence of drums you have to latch onto 'something else' (that may or may not 'be there') and either play with it or against it. It's surprisingly difficult to try and quantify 'rhythm' in this medium - I can 'hear' what I mean in my head but am not too sure it translates well into written words...

I'm gonna have to go with the concensus (at the moment at least) and say the Beatles when it comes to the overall 'promotion' of Bass - they really made huge inroads into the music scene and pretty much put Britain 'on the map' on the worldwide music stage. I think Wings was probably a welcome departure from the routine of the Beatles and allowed him to both mature as a musician and have more creative control over songwriting.

Good luck Phil. When you say the problem appears to be with the 2.5mm socket, do you mean it's broken in some way or do you mean there's no output from the preamp at all?
DON'T f*** WITH ME, I'M VERY PISSED!
I play in three bands - only one of those bands involves drums.
I seem to remember OHM amps looking quite good, definitely around in the late 70's. Slightly off topic, my mate used a FAL 50w 4channel PA head through a homemade 18" cab for guitar! I can only wonder how bad that must have sounded!
The OHM stuff was pretty pokey for it's size and sat between Laney and Peavey pricewise. I can remember using one for a pub gig one night just to try it out and it was pretty reasonable, just not as good as the Peavey stuff. I'd forgotten all about FAL, not sure if that's old age creeping up or whether it was just a brand that really needed forgetting... That's a 'long gone' British company that's probably best glossed over. They were an extremely odd company, PA speakers, guitar amps and disco decks all featured in their product lineup - they just never really decided where to aim.
If the kick and the bass aren't working together properly, then you don't have a groove. That is all.
Or in my case, you don't always have a drummer.
Blimey, no wonder so many of you are still using Fender basses What is it with this inability to accept new technology and approaches?
Well apart from being a bit of a Luddite, I'd like to see the MK2 version of this go to market before I'd consider investing. It's just a little bit too radical a change for me to deal with in one go. -
before you rush out and by a new pre-amp have a look at the plugs and sockets that are connecting up the current preamp, you might have to fit new plugs to get it all hooked up, another option would be to swap out the transducer at the same time, that way it will all work beautifully from the outset. if you are buying from a bricks and mortar store take the old preamp in with you to compare, if it's online try and get some pictures and info about the connections.
That's something I hadn't actually considered. The Takamine's that I've looked at in the past have all used small MOLEX connectors - not the sort of thing you can retrofit without some expensive tools.
I sometimes find that the thing to lock onto is not even audible, it's the FEELING of pace and rhythm that the ensemble generates. When all the musicians feel it, it's the sound of unity. Nothing and everything is creating the pace and rhythm. It just flows. It's like leaves falling off trees and landing on the ground at the same time. Lovely when it happens.
Absolutely, but I kinda thought that advising someone to lock onto a 'nothing' rather than looking for a 'something', which is a comparative tangible, might be making things a tad more complex than was necessary. ...and having read that back I'm still not sure that statement is even understandable unless you already know what I'm trying to convey...
However an inexperienced musician probably needs something audible to lock onto. Gawd knows why so many bassists seem to think it's the kick drum though. It's really so far off beam, and I think it really shows how limited these bassists believe their compositional role is.
Ah. That'd be due to the genres of music that they've become accustomed to listening to perhaps?
Or could it be that the amp got too hot as the fans may have not had enough space behind the amp?
The Ashdown has a thermal cutout that automatically resets itself, so not leaving enough ventilation space around the back of the amp would definately be my first suspicion based on your description of events.
At the end of the day, if a cheap bass is very playable as some bits of wood and the hardware doesn't break, the most important thing is the pickups and some decent wiring backing it up. Everything else in terms of 'quality' is entirely in the mind of the owner.
Provided an 'item' is sensibly specified, I tend towards the 'you get what you pay for' adage. That 'item' could be anything from a car to a camera or, in this scenario, a musical instrument.
looks like everything's been mentioned. OHM anybody?
I was wondering about OHM but I couldn't be certain that they were they were about in the 70's. Quite dinky little boxes with a textured grey paint and 'OHM' carved into the foam speaker baffle? They seem to have diversified away instrument amplification these days, if it's the same company I've been looking at.
You have nothing to lock into? Don't just rely on the bass drum, listen to other parts of the kit...the hi hat or ride cymbal is a good choice,as is the snare. I don't buy the whole 'lock with the bass drum' thing. Instead lock in with the whole kit.
+1 I was trying to explain this in another thread recently, albeit without drums. There's always 'something' there to lock onto, you just need to be aware that some things work better than others when it comes to maintaining the overall 'feel' of the tune.

There are (not unusually) two schools of thought on this. Having said that there are two will now inevitably mean that a shopkeeper will appear from nowhere and offer a third option... I personally think that a £70 bass fitted with £100 worth of new hardware\electronics is just that - a £70 bass fitted with £100 worth of new hardware\electronics. The same category as the 'yoofs' with their £300 Ford Fiestas pimped with £1000 of accessories. But, as a way of experimenting in a quest to gain understanding of what makes things work 'under the bonnet', it's hard to beat. Others will insist that the 'final product' is a fully giggable instrument, possibly in an attempt to justify the time they have spent on it to themselves in some way. If that was the reality of course then manufacturers would never be able to sell an instrument costing over £170.
Thank you for the support, much appreciated. Gig went well. I even managed to scoff down a plate of steak and chips before our set. Thankfully I prepared more than the guitarist in the vid
I not gonna say 'told you so', but I'm reserving the right to wear a smug grin for a little while... -
You numpty!, hypothetically...

Those pots are pretty much standard - they should fit just fine.
-
Well that leaves you with three possibilities. 1) You've not raised the pickup enough. 2) You've got a duff E string. 3) You need to hit the E string marginally harder whilst playing. Got to say that IME it's usually just a case of tilting the pickup - don't forget you can raise the 'E' end and drop the 'G' end to level things out.
I think i put in a fair bit of practice, i mean, i will openly admit it hasn't been 4 solid years of playing, there have been a couple spells when i havent played much at all for whatever reason, but as of the last several months i've been going at it pretty hard everyday and sometimes the improvement feels limited. Evidently not enough practice i guess!
Four years of playing isn't a huge amount of time to be fair. I'm on year 32 now and still find things that I struggle with.
