  1. I saw Supertramp on that tour in Hull. Same reaction as you too! Joan Armatrading okay but didn’t last long when Supertramp came on.
  2. Has been a few, but the main one that springs to mind was Black Sabbath at Hammersmith Odeon, probably 1977/8. My girlfriend had got us tickets, for some reason thinking I may like it. Truly dreadful noise, vocals just so bad as well as being way too loud and badly mixed. That and also being under the balcony and seeing it moving due to the nutters upstairs. We lasted maybe 3 numbers, and ended up in a pub round the corner where we saw a great RnB band for free.
  3. I had a Precision type bass a while ago which had a ply body and it was ace. (For complete disclosure though, I own and love a Danelectro Longhorn which is made using a pine frame covered in hardboard). There is also a belief that ply can be quite good for some acoustic instruments, particularly those with built in piezo type electrics. Apparently the rigidity of the ply helps with controlling feedback.
  4. I’ve always loved the Layla outro but realise I’m in a very small minority. Duane Allman and EC sound great to these ears, whether ‘in tune’ or not. I remember the album being released and listening to it all the way through in awe. Seem to remember hearing some other versions from the sessions which were far more shall we say ‘interesting’. Will post if I can find them, if only to annoy the BC faithful. 😂
  5. Know what you mean, but by then the main riff is getting a bit much IMHO, and the middle bit breaks it up nicely. Great guitar solo too...😀
  6. 'Scenes from an Italian restaurant' - Billy Joel 'Take me out' - Franz Ferdinand 'Spirit of radio' - Rush 'Diamonds on the soles of her shoes' - Paul Simon 'Don't fear the reaper' - Blue oyster Cult.
  7. Plenty of stuff kicking around in the 1970's when i was a teenager. I remember thinking these were dreadful even back then - Some girls will, some girls won't Some girls need a lot of lovin' and some girls don't Well, I know I've got the fever but I don't know why Some say they will and some girls lie. Even worse, this one - Can't believe anyone ever thought these lyrics were okay, even in 1974/75. Girls I like them fat, I like them tall Some skinny, some small I got to get to know them all Girls love the things they know Love the things they show Have to be where they go Pretty girls the sunshine in the air The perfume that they wear Girls are everywhere I like to be on an island With five or six of them fine ones With one to be in good looking And one to do best cooking Give me one with a lot of money Give me two with a lots of honey Give me three to do freaky things Give me four or five more that like to swing
  8. Absolutely. I always try to buy stuff that holds or even increases in value over the years for that very reason, although sometimes get it wrong! I bought a red Gibson 335 a couple of years ago, after wanting one for years. Prices on them do seem to be on the up so if push comes to shove that’s where I’ll start. It’s not too much of a wrench, as I don’t need it and to be honest am a very average guitarist at best so it doesn’t earn it’s keep either! Already parted with some bass stuff, mainly pedals and a Fender rig that weren’t in danger of being used any time soon so again no biggie. My old Precision however is going nowhere.
  9. Thanks - didn’t want to kill the thread, it just made me realise that my GAS is currently in a negative state! Hope I get it back soon though.
  10. Back in the USSR - Beatles.
  11. My list unfortunately will soon be one made up of stuff I’ll need to sell rather than acquire. Hoping it doesn’t come to that but must admit I’ve been looking in my music room mentally noting what would be first to go if the gig situation doesn’t turn around soon. Fingers crossed.
  12. Wow Chris, you played with 3 of my favourites - Micky Waller, Henry Spinetti and Kenney Jones? - respect! I'll add Charlie Watts and Max Weinberg (E-Street Band) too.
  13. I'm also a 3 - bass, guitar and piano. I have a mandolin though god knows why as I can barely get a few chords out of it - must get round to selling it I think.
  14. Not tried your model Ibanez, but on a couple of the short scale basses I’ve had I always use D’Addario EXL170S strings. Nickel wound with a nice even tone, and the 45-100 gauge suits me fine.
  15. Frank Skinner plays ukulele banjo, and once guested on a Fairport Convention album. Also one of the best stand ups I’ve ever seen.
  16. I’ve only been in a glider once from Pocklington, probably 30 years ago. A winch take off was quite ‘interesting’ but once up I had a great 30 min flight over the wolds on a clear sunny day. Great stuff.
  17. Quite a number of small / medium sized businesses located on the Pocklington Trading estate, ( next to the airfield ) which runs along the A1079. I think that's where PJD are based. Nice area round there, we looked at moving to the town not long ago.
  18. I don’t know much more, other than I believe they were / are made in Pocklington, East Yorkshire ( not far from me). I was doing a small gig in Scarborough a couple of years ago and got chatting to a nice guy inbetween sets, who turned out to be the owner of Guitar Galleries in the town. He was enthusing about this new small luthier who was making great instruments named PJD and they had just signed him up for an exclusive distribution deal IIRC. Guitar Galleries then opened a larger store in Beverley, and when I went in last year they had a number of PJD instruments in, but I haven’t seen any evidence of any basses yet. Great to see British makers doing well.
  19. We often play La Bamba on function gigs, and it always goes down well. If the dance floor is full then we (perhaps predictably...) segue into Twist and shout, works well. (that bit not in Spanish though...)
  20. Yup, this ^^^ Made in Indonesia, not overly loud and an average 12” speaker IIRC, but if it’s only for home use and is cheap then why not?
  21. This is me too. I’ve always (perhaps wrongly) viewed playing bass as being part of a group, and without other people readily on hand I just don’t get the same feeling about jamming along with tracks and on line stuff. I think for me it’s always been about playing live, and currently without the whole touring / band environment it all just feels a bit uninspiring. I have been having the odd hour or two with my Yamaha session cake headphone amp ( about the only good thing I’ve gained from lockdown) , and will need to ramp this up once I find out when our gigs look like recommencing. Bit worried my fingers will need some getting used to bass strings again too.
  22. Maybe a bit obvs with these, but certainly massive floor fillers IMHO. Get Lucky - Daft Punk Uptown Funk - Mark Ronson / Bruno Mars Happy - Pharrell Williams
  23. Amusingly there are now pics of the Hohner Arbor neckplate, and the price has rocketed! Fantastic.
  24. Thought you'd like this Douglas!
  25. ....or at least that's what Keith looks like he's been doing recently.😆
