  1. Give it a go, you'd love it! 🤣
  2. I think you're pretty much spot on. Most of my basses now (reluctantly) fall into the 'light' category, which rules out ever finding a Stingray I can use I think. I use Fender Precision Lytes for my main gig, which are around 7lbs and ideal for me. The weight thing does seem to polarise opinions on here, with mainly the younger members not too worried about using medium/heavy instruments. Back in the day I think we just accepted basses were going to be quite heavy, but as players have got older manufacturers have begun to realise weight is more of an issue.
  3. Looks like a Fender neck on there too 😕, and some very un-Dano bridges (and he's taken a fair old chunk of wood off the lower horn !)
  4. Not sure about the original Mart, but the TOTP appearance definitely had Dano content. (with apologies for J. Saville intro) You know, the one where the drummer jumps over the kit at the end.....
  5. Great pics / write up / thread! Really enjoyed following the progress of the event, as well as your great contribution. Brilliant job sir, hope you'll be doing the same at the next one.
  6. Mmm, thanks Paul but could use it before then really. Let me have a think , cheers.
  7. New locations for meeting up added type bump.
  8. Don't suppose you're having one of your road trips North any time soon Paul? ( I'm not down your way till July! )
  9. I use these, work very well although not on short cables (bit loose) or large diameter cables as mentioned above.
  10. Absolutely. I generally like stuff that sounds 'live' and prioritises feel over perfection, which is mainly why the more recent SD stuff ain't for me. Realise I'm probably in a minority though, most musicians I know love SD.
  11. Only the early SD stuff for me really (Reeling ITY etc) - when they started getting too clever and 11th chords everywhere then I got bored. Playing so good but oh so sterile IMHO. ( And please don't mention 'The Nightfly' or I'll really lose it....)
  12. Yup, correct! Been my sole source of income for a long time now, so somehow I don't think the big time is beckoning me any time soon...😆
  13. Masonite ( hardboard over here ) is a composite wood and is still used in their construction I believe, with the front and back panels being attached to a pine frame. Apparently it also makes a great wobble board. 😄 My Dano sounds a lot better than some traditional wood bodied basses I've heard too...
  14. I always aspired to being a wealthy faceless musician - someone who could walk down the street / go on holiday / put the bins out without worrying any of the paparazzi. I've already had a lifetime of studying for this, so just need the dosh and I'll be happy..
  15. Tamla Motown - got me introduced to how important bass was/is as well as great vocal performances and music that makes you want to dance. The Beatles - Blueprint for bands who write and play their own songs, along with choosing great covers early on in their career. The Stones - As above, but also led me into a lifelong appreciation of rhythm and blues and guitar based rock music. Made some of my favourite records ever.
  16. Honky tonk women - Stones Signed sealed delivered - Stevie Wonder Born to run - Bruce Springsteen. ( Could almost add most Top 30 stuff from the late 60’s to late 70’s too TBH - including glam, country, disco and punk/new wave! )
  17. For many years I was usually the youngest in bands I was in. Very fortunate in getting to play with some people who were better players with more gigging experience than myself which helped me enormously, both musically and socially. Now it’s a different situation - my main band are all in their mid 50’s to mid 60’s, and although there are maybe 10 years between some of us, the gap seems less as you all get older. The really odd part is that we also have two cellists who are in their early twenties, and even the massive age gap there doesn’t cause any problems. After over 45 years of gigging, I’m very lucky to be working with such great people.
  18. We did that. Ex local health authority Transit ambulance with twin wheel rear axle and a 3 litre V6 motor - you could almost see the fuel gauge going down! Every time we broke down whilst waiting for the AA to arrive we used to open a book taking bets on what it was this time. Finally died on the M18 and we reverted to using our own cars to get to gigs.
  19. Phil Lynott was a famous user of the DA version, along with Jack Bruce IIRC. Also think Bill Wyman may have used one, he certainly used the wooden body DA basses (as he liked their short scale length I believe.) Cracking bass, GLWTS.
  20. Mine was (I think) an earlier model. Two power amps, giving 250 watts each into 4 ohms. On the back panel there were rocker switches on each amplifier's output designated 'electronic crossover' - upper one was either 'full range' / 'high pass', lower one 'full range' /'low pass'. Both channels had a level control knob, and speaker jack output and XLR output. No way of bridging it, but TBH didn't really need to!! Loud as hell.
  21. Also Big Mama Thornton, who recorded 'Hound Dog' a few years before Elvis. Sister Rosetta was a force to be reckoned with, and did not receive recognition early enough. The clip above is ace! Re Chuck Berry, one of his main influences was T-Bone Walker who Chuck openly admitted he borrowed a lot of stuff from. Interesting little video here to demonstrate!
  22. Thought it was okay - great voice although can't be doing with all that waving the arms around stuff.... Still, better than the George Michael attempt, IMHO opinion of course. As Chris says above, the definitive version of this song is the Bonnie Raitt one, featuring Bruce Hornsby on piano. Apparently she recorded it in one take, saying she couldn't capture the emotion again.
  23. The guy with Robert Vincent was using a recent Trace head into the SWR cab, and a 70's looking Fender Precision. Little or no PA support in a small venue, sounded fantastic. Am guessing the cabs are heavy then Nik?
  24. Heard one of these last Friday being used by the bassist with Robert Vincent. Sounded ace! Enjoy.
  25. I think I've seen more fights at weddings and functions than I have in pubs over the last 40 odd years! Seen a lot of coked up hooray henrys being silly, and always found I could keep them off the stage with the well placed neck of my Precision. One of the worst I remember was during a function at a Park Lane hotel in London, where the wife of a well known soap opera star allegedly tried to glass someone in the ladies loos. Made the front page of the red tops the next day too. Maybe it was just our band that incited such antics....🤣
