I've just had my 1974 Hiwatt valve PA head serviced at Sound Superior in Lee on Solent, Hampshire. Really good service and did a great job on the amp which had not been used for 15+ years. [url="http://soundsuperior.co.uk/"]http://soundsuperior.co.uk/[/url] Jas

I bought this PA head 20 years ago from my neighbour, to use as a PA head in my first band (I was the singer). I didn't know what I was buying (and he didn't know what he was selling) and I just thought it was an old PA head with a couple of old speakers, but it got me gigging and I used it for a few years until I Joined other bands and didn't need it any longer. I put it in the loft and forgot about it until a few weeks ago when I stumbled across a thread in the for sale section of BC, Hiwatt custom 100 Bass head for sale £750!! So I did some homework and realised I had quite a nice guitar/bass valve amp in the loft. So I got it out and sent it off to the local tech guy to get it serviced. Got it back yesterday, and wow!! what a lovely smooth sound it makes with my Bass guitar. The amp has 6 inputs, so I used a junction box to plug in to 3 inputs on the amp and it just makes the nicest sound ever. I am so chuffed I used a Marshall 4x10 cab and then a Peavey 1x15 cab and its great. I can see why some people love the vintage gear. It has the original Partridge transformers, Bulgin Lead etc, and the tech guy said its in great condition. I have dated it to 1974 using the S/N, 2 years younger than me and its certainly wearing better than me!! My missus wants me to sell it, but now i've played it, I'm not so sure I tried it with my PRS 6 string, and again its a lovely amp with that too. I suppose its a kind of 'Barn Find' as in I had something pugged away that I didn't realise was reasonably rare and worth a few quid. First time thats ever happened to me Some pics Jas

I have the MB4410, same amp but 4 x 10". I think its a great amp for the money. There have been reliability issues with them but i had no issues sending mine back for replacement when the volume pot started to crackle. I still use mine for rehearsing and the odd gig now and then with no problems. Like Loz, I added a 1 x 15" extensiion for more depth and its plenty loud enough. TBH its plenty loud enough on its own. I like the 2 channels and the blend option, I find i can get all the sounds and tones I need (covers band). Jas

+1 for the Zoom H2, fantastic bit of kit for the money, nice and easy to use, not too expensive. Jas

I bought an MB4410 combo 15 months ago, it was great for about a month and then started to make crackling noises from the gain pot. I sent it back and now have a replacement one. This one has been great, not missed a beat and as mentioned before, it makes some great noises when you tinker with the settings. I use both channels for different songs (I'm in a covers band) and it also has a 'Blend' channel that blends both the classic and modern channels, which is great. The amp has clearly been made on a budget, but it has great sounds and is quite versatile. It is bloody heavey at 51kgs so would recommend the head and cab stack. Would I buy another? ............................... Yes I would, I love it and I always have my Peavey as a back up Jas

I bought the H2 a couple of months ago, bloody good piece of kit for the money. Really easy to set up and use, LCD display is a little small though. I just put it in the middle of the rehearsal room using the mic stand adapter that came with it and it pics up all instruments really well. Just play with the recording levels to suit the level of your band. The batteries last a 3 hour session no problem. Oggy You just turn it on, select what mic setup you want, and press record It is a really easy bit of kit to use, setting up the mic is just pressing a button to scroll through 4 settings. i use the '2ch' setting as it pics up sound from all directions. just place the H2 in the middle of the room with all amps facing it and away you go. I use the mic stand adapter to hold the H2. You can st the recording level to what ever you want, just follow the easy to use manual. The quality of the recording is great, not what you expect from such a cheap and small unit. HTH Jas

Get a Zoom H2 Its a great recorder and you don't need a lap top to record. It really is a great piece of kit and at around £140 ish its good value for money. i got one for recording rehearsals a few weeks back and i'm really impressed. Jas

A good purchase I have got the MB 4410, same but with 4 x 10's, its a really good amp. I love the classic channel, I didn't get on with the modern channel at first, but after a bit of playing with the settings, I have found quite a nice sound. The Blend switch is just genius Enjoy Jas

I try to visualise the patterns on most songs. I find I can remember things i see better than what I have read on a sheet. Our guitarist has a folder full of tab and chord and he struggles to give them up, he is quite dependant on them. i try to just read the tab and then throw it away and it forces me to remember. Jas

Keep a close eye on the classifieds on here, i just picked up a Peavey 300 Combo for £120. Loads of amp for not a lot of money. Its old, but is bullet proof. You just have to keep on looking and be patient................ Jas

Well I have listened to The Who for the last 20 years or so, got most of the commercially available albums and really enjoy listening to the music. I have always enjoyed listening to John playing the Bass, even though I have only been playing the Bass for the last year or so. The distinct sound of Johns bass enhanced the music of The Who and worked so well. He rarely just played root notes quietly just filling in the rhythm parts. I love his playing on 'my generation' it makes me smile when I listen to it. For me, that is good music and good playing. Personally, I don't think you need to be an outstandingly technical player to be in a good band, but of course it helps! All of this is just my opinion of course.................. Jas

Hi, new to the Bass and I have bought a new Marshall MB4410 combo. As I understand it, it has a valve pre amp. Do I need to let the Amp warm up at all? The reason I ask is because when I turn the amp on, all is not well. It is distinctly quieter and sounds awfull. It pops and farts when I try to turn it up, unless I wait for about 5 - 10 minutes and then all is fine. The amp is brand new, is it faulty? Thanks in advance Jas

Hi there My name is Jas and i picked up the Bass about 4 months ago. I have kind of played 6 string guitar for umpty ump years, in and out of bands and a bit of singing. I have to say though, I am really enjoying playing the Bass and wish I had picked it up earlier. It is such a cool instrument to play. I am still learning (teaching myself) but starting to get the hang of it now. I have joined a new band and will hopefully be looking to gig in the new year. I have only just come across this forum, but it looks to have loads of info and advice so I will be browsing and asking questions Jas
