Hello, Thanks very much for the reply, I didnt realise you were a member otherwise I would have sent you a PM. I will most definately be taking you up on the offer to pop in, in that case. I cant afford a Nordy or W&T just yet but always need bits and bobs. Castle and Basses it is this friday then (weather permitting). Many thanks Mark. Nathan
BassDirect is a BC affilate .. Here's the link but you may not want to go there http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showforum=46

He's very friendly and exerts no pressure at all. You can play whatever you want and just walk away ... He can do that because he knows his stuff creates a huge build up of GAS in even the most resistant shopper and you may well be back for Nordy in 5 months time
Hmm, I might be able to make this. If I do I might bring my Barefaced Big One and Hartke LH1000....
Aha! The S Wales Barefaced cabs emerge, blinking, into the light .. Bring your for sale stuff too?
Thanks for that, OG. Got the idea now! I'll probably bring my Mag head if only to get some idea of how it compares to the other things that people try. Tag Team bass playing. The mind boggles Could be really handy late in a gig when nature calls...
Yeah I am sure people will let you have a go on some severe GAS inducing micro light head things ... Actually if a Barefaced makes a mag sound better it's going to be woth the price alone (OK Ok people, I know! "YMMV" and all that with Ashdown but they don't work for me ...)
In another thread OldGit asked if one of the Compact cabs that are currently in circulation would be available for the bash. I think they will have gone east by then, but I should have one available to bring if it would be useful (along with any of the pretty standard kit below!). Thing is, I've never been to one of these bass-fests. Could someone kindly spell out to me what I do with anything I bring please? Do I end up having to stand by it all day to look after it? And is there any point bringing a cab without an amp? Sorry, these are probably really thick questions for everyone who's been to one of these events!
Fair questions indeed. In the 2 rooms without the luthier and/or drummer there will be gear in stacks all over the place, if previous bashes are anything to go by. people set up their stacks and bass racks and then everyone wanders around and talks to the owner about their stuff and has a go. People plug their basses into other's stacks and heads and cabs and other people's basses into their stacks. That's the idea, really. That and putting faces to the names. I don't know if anyone has ever had anything stolen from a bash. We will do what we can to make sure that only "basschat" people go into our rooms but it is an open rehearsal place and Geeps could conceivibly walk in off the street, as well as other musicians using the rest of the rooms. Having said that it's way away from any passing traffic so I'm not very worried. We will give out big obvious name stckers as people sign in so it should be pretty clear who the BC bashers are. If you are worried about it you may want to stay in the room with it or tag team with someone else. If you bring a Barefaced cab I suspect there will be a queue to try it with people's amps and basses so you'll probably not need to bring a head Alex is looking at the possibility of sending a cab over too so we may have two...
Why? What will YOU be wearing?!?
oh something stupid I suspect Feel free to point at me and laugh too At my age it's usually whatever is on top of the washed pile. Hopefully it will be mine and not hers or the lads.. knee crotch board shorts are hard to walk in, I find. Stripes plus plaid plus spots, bit of purple (natch), odd socks, odd shoes sometimes I am told (can't see them pass my gut so I don't always notice, or care... and a Rabbit Hat as my wife always suggest that when I say I'm going out to the Globe,. Well, actually she shouts "Wear the fox hat" as I leave... No idea why as I don't have a fox hat. I wear the rabbit one instead and hope she doesn't notice... Actually its VERY, VERY hot in there so shorts are deriguer,
yeah mate, you've got a point. Ignore my previous post as I obviously talk a load of crap!
Ha ha, sorry, I didn't mean that.. Even the brilliant solos you hear top bands play are worked out to a certain extent. I heard an interview with some "top guitarist" years ago. I can't remember who but before then I used to think they just did it effortlessly and instinctively, knowing what notes to use over the chords etc. and that was what made them different to us normal humans. Anyway this guy said he had to go back to all his old records to make sure he didn't just re-run one of his old solos accidentally. Then he sat down with the chords on a tape and went round and round and round until the muse appeared and the solo came out. Sometimes it was months. Then he had to get everyone to hear it and to say if they recognised anything ... So yeah I think Peter's man needs some time to learn a solo but he should be doing as much as possible at home with a recording of the bit he has to solo over, as someone mentioned before..

Try raising the pickup so it is nearer the strings for the cheapest possible fix. Everything else (othe than technique) costs money... It may work
I wouldn't want to play with a guitarist who had to rehearse solo's. They should be 'in the moment' and spontaneous.
I disagree. A solo can be a spontaneous pice of brilliance but if you are not one of the very few people who can produce one of these every time then a certain amount of preparation is essential. If your soloist just does the same pentatonic scales evey time or does no building, adds no tension or a story then it's just so much bluster and widdle. I'd much rather someone worked out a solo they play more or less the same each time for some tunes. Peter's man is playing covers though so he'll have a solo to copy, I guess.
-
Just like to revise my view of your man Peter. He's a looser. His reason for playing is to get out of the house and strumm away. he sounds like the sort who will rehearse for ever .. Anyone who tunes up audibly and noodles between tunes at gigs needs a good talking to and a dose of reality. No excuse for it.
Thanks Jack, I like your plan. I will give that a go.
Be sure to say "nothing" in and "if you don't know, I'm not going to tell you" when they ask what's wrong .. Marriages eh? Oh sorry this is a band isn't it .... I forgot for a bit there .. Call a meeting, bring it all up and speak the truth. If they don't change, leave. The worst thing that can happen is that they will sack you or let you leave, then implement all the changes you've recommended and become successful, rich and famous. That may not happen though -
Steinberger Spirit Double Neck (Bass & Guitar)
OldGit replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
Hah, I was having a chat with a bass builder friend of mine and we cooked up an idea of getting two Hohner cricket bats, bass and guitar, and doing just that. I may consider this if I get nowhere with getting a stock double. It would be laughably easy to do! I really like the Hohners as well, I've had a Hohner headless bass and guitar before. They are so good for the money. Cheers.
Yeah I'd do that -
I'm no bass expert, consider myself a rank amateur really as I've never played live. I do like decent instruments though and I couldn't resist a custom shop Reggie Hamilton V that I nabbed off of eBay this year for around £1100. It is my favourite bass that I have ever laid my hands on and I really do feel that it is 100% the bass that I want to spend the rest of my life with, to have and to hold, in slickness and wealth, forever and ever ....etc etc. So yeah, I'm a fan of CS.
Goodness. I hope it works for you in a live gig situatio, if you ever do ...
Roger Taylor. Queen's weakest link. BOOM BASH BOOM BASH BOOM BASH BOOM BASH CRASH BOOM BASH BOOM BASH BOOM BASH BOOM BASH CRASH
+1 He really messed up the Free and Bad Co numbers they did in that covers act they did. How you play the bass drum in All Right Now different to the original beats me... Edit: Just realised this was the thread (ages ago) where I ranted about that before
-
Hummmmmm half and half. I think you can only do so much by yourself, espeicially for solos, Then it's best to hear what everyone else is doing to hone it and tie in with everything else.

Welcome! and welcome back to gigging.... There's a fair few light weight amping options and I'd certainly concur that a light head and light cab is the way to go, your budget may just be enough for used stuff if you can find it to buy. You may like to save a bit more or get a light cab and a heavy old style head to start with. Most available light heads are probably the various Markbass ones. A 500 watt one (ie 500 when you have a 4ohm speaker setup) woud give you loads of headroom in case you get louder. Something like Little Mark 2 (or "LMII" in shorthand) woud be great. £450 or so new, 250-300 used. Beware there's a Little Mark that is 250 watts and a bit underpowered fro what you'r talking about. There's various cabs around but you should certainly talk to our very own Alex on here who makes the Barefaced cabs http://www.barefacedbass.com Others can chip in with more stuff but for the sake of your back keep it light
Another one from Metasonix, makers of the 'f***ing f***er', the Butt Probe pedal. Even has such controls as; Fist, Ream & Screw
He's trying too hard, really. I like the bit in the video where the is upset 'cos no one at NAMM gives a flying foooooook about his daft name for his amp. 30 years after punk no one really cares. Mind you, If he could get the Jonas Brothers to use them that would be fun.
