Yep-it eliminates the connection between you, the mic, and your backline. After dying onstage a few years back (and luckily being brought back by a Doc in the audience) I went wireless, and haven't used a lead since.
I've died on stage a few times ...

Wireless for 20 years too.. Currently I use a Sennheiser EW172. Thousands of different frequencies available (most of them illegal now) and no drop off of signal or quality. The OP bands were probably all using legal licence free systems. (hey, I'm more punk than them ) We have 4 Sennheiser cheapo vocal mics and a bug guitar system that use those frequencies too. We can't use all 5 at once as the legal frequency band is so narrow something always messes with something else.... Why use them at all? Well we mix with the audience, I sound check and deliver our trademark Jelly Baby awards to the punters and I go walk about on the stage for off mic chats with the other front man ... even on small stages ... He;s down in teh punters a lot with his instruments and vocal mic .. We just couldn't do it the same way if we all had to stay on the stage.... It takes no time to set up as it's in my rack and all wired in anyway. In fact using a cable is more time consuming cos I have to remember how to do it and then to plug into my foot pedal string. And it gets under my feet, and I go walking off stage an take my rig with me ... Dave (OBBM) makes the finest short cables for bass to transmitter though Having said all that in my upright gig I use a wonderful and nostalgic Vox curly lead cos I do none of the above, I just stand there and play
Last night I went to see Walter Trout in Cardiff. It was an excellent show as WT is a quality guitarist. What made it for me, but then I am biased of course, was the really tight rhythm section of Michael Leasure and Rick Knapp. There was nothing really fancy on the bass lines - just quality timing, phrasing and a lovely tone from his Lakland and Mesa amp. It is great to see someone playing just 4 strings! (Never felt the need for more but I'm old-fashioned). After the concert, as we left the Globe, I managed to have a chat to Rick and I am really pleased to say what a nice guy he is. A great night.
Aaaah I probably passed you in the queue to get in on my run to the [s]off licence[/s] gym .. Sadly I couldn't go to the concert So, Newbie in SE Wales, Can we tempt you to the SE Wales bass bash (see link below) or to support the Globe in their fight to stay open?
It was suggested that I attempt some backing vox to try and bring me out my shell. Not entirely convinced I can do it but will set up a mic at practice so I can give it a go. Its all well and good attempting it in my living room but put me on the spot and its sink or swim. Nothing to lose after all it is just practice.
Just make sure your vocals are right - ie they are more important than your bass at that point. I know that's difficult for a bass player to agree with but the general public will hear bad (and good) vocals every time but won't notice bass unless it's really bad .. Sort out your monitoring so you can clearly hear yourself and the stuff you are supposed to be singing harmony against. When you are singing keep your head up and look at the back wall above the heads of the crowd. Don't try to sing and look at your frets or shoes at the same time 'cos it's just not practical and you'll end up singing off mic ... Simplify the bass part under the vox to it's absolute minimum whilst you get the hang of it, then gradually bring any complexity back in, if there is any ~ Practice all of this in the rehearsal studio - including the staring at the back wall when singing ... You want to make your errors and develop your skill in private, not in public. BV's are really good at enhancing a band's sound, much more than guitar solos. Everyone should recognise that and give you enough rehearsal time time to get it right.
Does anyone think it's worth having my Barefaced cabs reviewed by BGM? I've contacted them a few times of late but they appear to be ignoring me... Alex
I'd suggest you first get your website sorted out with your new design and incorporating all the updates and changes suggested on here first. When was that? 6 months ago? You wouldn't want to waste all the resultant traffic with a relatively poor first impression. The other thing to do is to create a section of brilliant images and stats and quotes and history for journo's to use.. like Ashdown do in their press area: http://www.ashdownmusic.com/press/index.asp Makes it all a lot easier for the press and that is always a good idea.. All the HQ pictures are there to use in print, quotes, stats etc... I suspect that's one reason why Ashdown get reviewed so much ...
+1 but goes for all venues IMO
+ It's 'cos it's all about being entertaining and not necessarily fabulously proficient on your instrument though you can do both ... People like to herd and audiences are no exception. If there's 20 people having a good time the instinct is to join in. So .. if the band are having a good time, so will the audience (in most normal, pub, drinking, covers band type gigs) If the band is The Haughty, Earnest and Worthy Band, the audience will probably be elsewhere enjoying a band enjoying themselves on stage and showing it. The best bands I've seen/been in in this type of gig go out with a very obvious "we're going to have a great time. You can join in if you like" approach..
Sounds fantastic! I will hopefully be at their next London show!
Stand close enough to infect them with some of The Famous Funk Sartorial Elegance will you? I personally found the worn denim aspect of the front persons/people a bit disappointing. It's classy music and I think that deserves a bit more attention to wardrobe. The women had done so and Pete had his customary Bass Player's Black get up on but it looked like half the band had left their stage clothes at home .......

Basschat Member Pete Academy in action on his Roscoe summut or other. Pete Academy and Nearly Dan graced us with a visit last week. Nearly Dan website WorkSurf Warning: It has automatic sound which starts as you arrive on the site! The Globe is a great 400 or so capacity venue in Cardiff with a good rep for biggish names (Walter Trout is there tonight and Johnnie Winter played here a while back, for example) local party bands and the better end of the tribute market. This is where Nearly Dan fit. Musically it was fabbo. I was pleased to find the band were not trying to be Steely Dan but were, instead, a great band that had chosen to play some terric tunes from an outstanding and varied catalogue. I liked the excursions from the well known album versions and the obvious freedom everyone has to not play it exactly like the record note for note.. I find that sort of band a tad sterile. Certainly not the case here. The playing of every one was outstanding but that of Rob the lead guitarist* was stunning. All those tricky Steely solos flying out of his new Gibson semi with fun added and some great interplay between him and Steve on lead vocals and really good guitar playing himself. Pete himself looked very comfortable with the tricky and challenging basslines varying easily between the shuffle of Black Monday and some of Chuck Rainey's finest jazz funk lines on Josie. One tune was introduced as "we're not sure about this one..." and they were right to be unsure. It must get a bit repetitious playing the same 20 or so greatest hits for decades, and it must be tempting to play the less well known tracks from the albums now and then. That would be fine as nothing Steely Dan do is bad as such. But if you do that then you have to do it with enthusiasm and commitment and preferably without pre-announcing your ambivalence... Aside from that the evening was very relaxed, more like a bunch of mates playing to another bunch of their mates. Some of that was true as the band attracts a following and there were people there from some distance away, Poole in one case. The local numbers were probably diminished by Tom Jones being on in the Stadium that night. He's still a big local hero. As a sax player I really appreciated how firkin' brilliant "The Musicians" on the alto and tenor saxes were. Really impressive, especially at such tender ages. As a baritone sax player myself I missed the featured big horn in My Old School though. The women singers, "the Babble-on Sisters", did a great job, lead vocals on Dirty Work and just generally as they were both dying from man flu The greatest hits were here (apart from Haitian Divorce - asked for after the last encore, along with All Right Now ) Pete's bass sound was great in the featured bits, especially the one bar slap solo in Josie but a bit low in the mix in general. Mind you I did have my earplugs in. His Roscoe looked fabulous as you can see in the picture. Apart from that the band was mixed well out front buy their sound engineer, however the lead singer was clearly suffering from an on /off monitor problem. I wondered if the band, and Pete, got bored playing the same tunes but it certainly didn't look like it. There were some big smiles and some obvious enjoyment in the band at playing, and listening to, the fine soloing and ensemble playing. The big gay choir in the balcony was funny.. They were singing along to the verses as well as the choruses and the room was full of musicians. I suspect this is normal for Nearly Dan gigs. They even had a really fanatical fan right down the front, shaking hands with any of the band who would go near him, doing that "aren't they just great" stuff to anyone nearby and going way over the top .. I guess it gets some people that way.... So, all in all a really enjoyable gig with some outstanding playing bringing the magic of Steely Dan to life - it's a cliche but that really was what it was like. * Rob is also a bass player in (one of the bands called) "The Barflys" where he plays yet another Roscoe The Barflys Website
