1. Been round this one a few times so you'll not be surprised to hear me go on again. It's a performance. You have to be entertaining. Yes, you, the bass player. Not just the front person and lead guitarist.. You have to entertain the people or they won't come and see your band. The people here commenting about no audience may like to try performing a bit more. If the audience is not looking at your band your front person is probably not doing their job and nor are you. Playing the right notes is about 40% of your job. Looking cool, 20%; Looking like you are having a good time and communicating that to the audience 50% and performing is 100% How many times do punters go home and tell their mates "hey this band I saw last night were really moody and introspective but all of the bass notes were right" and how many times do they tell their mates "hey this band I saw last night were great. Really entertaining! Come and see them next time." So ..... Lift up your head. Practice 'til you can play a lot of your set with your eyes closed (but for goodness sake don't do that on stage) then rehearse playing without looking at your neck. Yup, rehearse that, in a rehearsal studio, just like your rehearse the lead breaks. It's MORE important than the lead breaks. No, really, it is. If you guitarist/lead vocals complains tell him/her you need to rehearse this bit to support him... That should do it. 5 people entertaining the audience is a lot better than one doing it. Work out routines if you need to. Hints and tips: look at something just above the head of the punters. "Exit sign gazing" is a well warn phrase but it works. Don't stare at the telly or the ceiling. You'll look stupid Find a friendly person and smile at them a bit - don't overdo it unless you know them. A boyfriend's fist in the face can often offend ... Look at no one and smile at them a bit. Everyone else in teh room will think you know someone and - goodness, someone came back to see them again! See Robbie Williams do that last week on teh Electric proms? Did you see anyone he was smiling at? No but you imagine that person don't you. Scan the tops of the audience's heads. They will feel it is like eye contact (which is what works best) even though it's not. Also stick your bass neck out towards the audience. Then you can just raise your eyes a little to see the audience's faces.. Always perform to the audience and not your drummer (you can do this a bit but only once you've mastered performing to the audience skillz) And slowly the word will get around that you are an entertaining band.......

Actually Alex's life is a bit like that right now but we all want him to succeed so I'm just being the nagging Devil's advocate for a bit Don't tell him though ..
 9.
After losing out on a MIJ (Salmon Pink) '62 Jazz Bass on eBay last night (probably to one of you evil people) due to being caught out by £1 in the last five seconds, I've decided I really need one in my life. Would anyone be willing to sell one, or know anyone who wants to sell one, or even any local stores* that are selling one? *Preferably NOT to be imported in from the US, or Far East - because I haven't yet got the balls and confidence to buy from abroad. If anyone can help me with my new lust, it would be much appreciated. Thanks!!
Just sold a white one .. Don't suppose you fancy a Fender JV P bass 62RI from 1982? It's not pink It's no hassle to import a used one from Japan. Just needs a few extra quid for postage and tax ..
 10.
I had a thread about this last year. My experience has been that the larger the band, the less opportunity/need there is for pedals. My band has two guitarists and a keyboard player - there's only room for an effect or two on the occasional song. Most of the time the pedals are there ... but in true bypass mode. I really must start up a three-piece band as a side project.
bass > Senheisser wireless > Wah > Zoom 2.1 multi > 2 channel amp with SVT setting on one and full on reggae phatness on the other. It depends on what is happening, whether my band is the full 5 of us or if we have 4, and then if it's the guy who plays simple guitar or the other one that plays guitar +GT10 effects + mandolin + banjo and 2 keyboards (the professor...) I use octave, funkwah, distortion but mostly for added fun and punter teasing (and winding up the guitarist) As Jack says, the more other things going on the less notes and effects I do but the wah-wah wars are fun sometimes Depping for a rock band I just plug straight in and depping on upright I just plug straight in too .. Not even a tuner

 12.
It would be nice if that was currently an option! Alex
Ha ha yeah .. Get off Bass chat for a start .. There's the time to swap one image ... I was wondering where the other speaker went in that cab. maybe like the Orange cab, I thought.. Stay off BC for 30 mins and there's a few typos changed ... Get up 30 mins earlier, don't practice your bass 'til you've done it Sorry, life coach APP got activated
 13. I'd say it's worth scheduling two Barefaced days right now this week to sort your site. You need it to be as accurate as possible whilst we're all promoting the site all over and it's a quick fix relative, and then goes on working for you , rather than looking like you don't do that ol' attention to detail stuff ....
 14. Typo on the Vintage page: "And because this amp is one for all the valve amp lovers we're going for a vintage look with silver Fender-style grill cloth and metal corners."
 15.
Just to be a pedantic bugger - the text in your FAQ about wait times is still referring to things being ready in May, might want to do something to bring that up to date. Your page about availability kind of renders that question obsolete, so you could replace the current answer with a link to that page Looks the business though, a huge improvement. Nice one!!
Looking good... Take out any dates and things that need updating .. so for example don't say "we've been building cabs for 4 years" but "we've been building cabs since 2005" that sort of thing. Also take the date off the copyright statement. It will be out of date come 2010. If you update it every year you'll like you are a new company which raises questions about longevity. You don't need it anyway. Just have "© Barefaced" +1 on pictures .. also as we said before, with a bass / head for scale.
 16.
If you do next day delivery with Parcelforce they increase the insurance to 200 but that seems the max they will do for a musical instrument. It's down to whoever buys it to decide if they want to take the risk. I recently sold an expensive bass and sent it parcelforce as the buyer was happy to take the risk. Arrived perfectly OK.
Where does it say they increase the musical instrument insrance up to £200 for next day? That could be handy in some cases. The £150 musical instrument insurance limitation is hidden well away on theiir website under "wrapping guidelines" and is only known to a select few PF employees, mostly in the claims department. You don't need to take any risk if you use Post Office Special Delivery. Tons of cover and the same price as parcelforce and they take it in at the post office too ..
 17.
If I could add a totally unhelpful post... learn to play with your eyes closed... no seriously! (says he with leds)
Ha ha, +1 with reservations .. I use my lovely Shuker LEDs to locate a starting fret in the dark and, especially, when jamming on stuff I don't know so well. Whipping up to the 14th fret in a hurry is easier if you can see the markers clearly..
 18. I'm a Stagg user. Not modified so I'll be interested to see what you do Mateybass. Iw as wondering if that was a 5 string Stagg in yoru avatar... I'd like to know about sorting the nut ... Meanwhile, it's a perfectly good first upright for people not sure. For about £250, used, you can work out if you are going to like playing that way. I've played the WAV and I find the stand a pain. I like to lean and move the Stagg around when I'm playing which I couldn't do with the WAV. I'd prefer something that looks a bit more like a scaled down double bass rather than a neck on a stand but apart from that it's fine.
 19. Fretlord Glowdotz http://fretlord.com/glowdotz.htm Used them for years to make the Fender side markers visible for these old eyes.. Just stick them over the orginals. They look ok and you can feel them, but only just. They cost about £15 shipped (remember to tick the box for European shipping) You get a sheet of glow in the dark stuff with big and little circles. Big ones are supposed to go on the front (ha ha, as if) In daylight the side ones are 3mm white dots.. Shine the little lamp they give you on them (it comes with a velcro sticky thing to stick it to the back of your headstock) and they glow for a bit. Not nearly as good as LEDs but better than tiny side markers, and £240 cheaper, at least....
 20.
I am not sure who I normally send my guitars with - I take them to the Royal mail depot... is that not parecleforce? So who do you all ship with?
Royal Mail Special Delivery 48 if I want to ship it from the post office. Other than that there's a whole thread on couriers with a scoring system, goodness and badness.. Here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?s=&sho...ost&p=58430
 21.
+100. If you read the small print, ParcelFarce insurance only covers musical instruments up to £150 maximum. They don't tell you this at the PO and are happy to take money off you for "enhanced insurance" that has absolutely no value. Lovely bass by the way - I'm guessing it's actually right-handed, not a lefty. Jon.
Yippie! I'm not the olnly one squawkin' about this now
 22. Yummie bass mate .. Don't actually use Parcelforce to ship it though
 23. Posh frocks then Please keep us informed of that, Pete
 24.
We had a similar thing when playing at a scout charity night. We usually do a Rory Gallagher-esque version of 'Messin with the Kid' But then we started getting silly and tried to think of tunes to play - the best of which was Ides of March and 'Vehicle' - 'I'm the friendly stranger in the black sedan, won't you come inside my car'.. any more suggestions?
Bit of a thread derail but... Young Girl by Gary Puckett and the Union Gap Kissing in the back row of the Movies - The Drifters "Evey night I pick you up from School" I suppose she could be a teacher ... and for those BOTB where the parents are along too "Mother's daughter" by Sanatana "Your mother ain't so bad, what happened to you?..."
 25.
Well we had the induction meeting yesterday (went with singer and drummer) everything panned out as per what we've gleaned about them online. We got to meet the other bands from the competition ( one of which is called Devil's Testicle ) and they all seemed as equally bemused as we were. The lead organiser explained that each band were expected to bring their own gear (drums will be provided) and also said that they expected a 5 minute turnaround between songs - I piped up about the likelihood of this happening but he stood firm and that hoped we would be able to stick to the plan. Right at the end of the "workshop" he added that on the night of the competition we will be asked to sign documentation that allows them to use all recorded/video material for promotional use.... drummer and singer turn to me and say "go on say it".... but I didn't, the smile on my face said it all. Seeing as our band seems committed to doing this I will have a bloody good look over the release forms and make sure that we are just allowing them to use the material and not own the rights to it. If it turns out to be the latter I will refuse to play regardless of what the other guys think.
Agree with your band that you will only go forward with this if you can get the documentation up front and go through it before deciding. On the night your band's judgement will be clouded by the whole thing of carting the gear there, getting psyched up to play and the adrenaline> I'd bet if they give you just 5 miniutes between bands you'll get 2 minutes to read the contract you are signing. It will be loads more difficult to walk away once you are there. Much better to read it through in the cold light of day. Oh, and didn't they say the backline was supplied, so now it's just drums?
