Chatting to the lad in the phone shop this week he mentioned he may get a jazz band for his wedding next year. So we nattered about wedding music, etc and he mentioned his mate has a band that does all sorts. Of course being a local muso I asked who was in the band "Mark and his cousin who plays bass. His parents had that restaurant on North rd, Palladinos. I think his cousin has played with some famous people" Yes folks, Pino Palladino is playing his wedding Cheap too I explained who Pino had played with - like the Who at the Superbowl this year, Paul Young etc.. He was surprised but not that impressed Of course if you are 21 it's all ancient history ...
Thanks for the warning - the credit card will remain locked up safely at home!
But seriously bring your bass and try a few rigs. It ay give you an idea of what you may want to aim for or look out for used. As has been said before the quality difference between a £150 bass and a £500 bass (new prices) is huge. Up from there is largely marginal changes and taste. The W&T's are amazing but very little of the amaziness is actually necessary -

Yeah they had some great people on their records. I did have a laff recently though with the campaign to get the Monkees into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Sign here if you want to help three actors and a fairly good guitarist miming to covers to devalue the sacred portals http://www.petitiononline.com/Kretch07/petition.html -
Thanks OG. The desire to upgrade NOW is strong, but I should try some stuff first. Hopefully I'll be able to make it to the wood & tronics bash, and that will give me a better idea of how different kit sounds (and hopefully pick up some technique/style tips too).
ha ha yeah well that may present your credit card with some options too -
I keep (and update) a "book" of song titles that I'll take as starting points, then if I come up with an interesting melody idea/hook, I'll try matching with an appropriate lyrical idea. Keeps me focused...........ooooh look!... a fly.....
As I am permanently straight, I have noticed that I am much more creative at different times of day. Ideas seem to come along at these times. I've books of lyrics, song title ideas (well database files these days) and melody ideas recordings in voice memo files. Sometimes they coalesce into songs. However the songs that tend to work best are largely born fully formed and in a really fast time. A bit of editing later to tighten things up and they are fine. One day I'll make the album....

Gear upgrading & sound issues: where do I go from here?

Bit like Sarah's thread. 45 watts is a practice amp for most people, if you have drums to compete with. A good bass will probably struggle to sound Ok through an underpowered bass amp/combo turned up too loud where as a crap bass through an SVT and 8x10 will probably sound OK. So I'd say try a reasonable combo with about 300 watts and then see if you need to change your bass or parts of it. A rehearsal studio may have one you can try. 10, 12 or 15 inch speakers all sound Ok but different. That's down to taste and possibly back strength... -
usually when its a gig with a few bands on the bill, they tend to get one of the bands to supply their gear so they avoid having 4 or more bands worth of gear in the venue and also make changeovers much quicker. in these situations it is the promoters responsibility to ensure that the gear supplied is suitable for all the bands that are playing. most festivals supply a hired house backline for all but the headlining band, again to reduce changeover time etc. the promoter always pays for said hired backline. granted, if its just a couple of bands its not really the pomoters problem.
OK.
you can't make the earth shake with a POD tho let's face it.
Plugged into a 5K PA you can
-
just tell the promoter that you only have a very small practice amp and it would not be suitable for gigging. dont go wasting your money hiring anything either, as it is ultimatly the promoters responsibility to hire extra backline if it is required, he is already avoiding this cost by asking bands to share your gear as i assume your not getting paid for the hire.
Squse me but when is it the promotor's responsible for providing backline?
-
In general terms I like to have enough ampage to cope with the room even if there's no PA support for bass. Then if there is you can turn it down on stage and if there isn't you aren't stuffed. We're assuming you are on with other bands and thus lending your backline to others. is this the case or do all teh bands on bring backline? There's lots of threads on here about using other people's back line and lending yours. Plenty of views.
Had a ten minute slot in a Battle of the Bands at our rhythm guitarist's school. We played alright, got a good reaction, but didn't win (or even get 2nd or 3rd place) unfortunately...that said, of the bands that did get in the top three places, two of them played quite popular stuff (the winners playing Lady Gaga's 'Bad Romance', for example) and the others were quite young children, making me wonder if the judges were influenced by the genre of songs played or by the age of the participants. Sorry if that came across as sour grapes; I'm not denying that those three bands were very good (the young uns in particular were very good for their age; the fact that they played mostly AC/DC covers particularly enamoured me to them) but in my opinion there were several other bands there (not necessarily us) who should have been in the top 3.
Never act (or play BOTBs) with animals or children... Did they tell you the criteria for doing well, what the judges were looking for?
By all means upgrade your stuff but hang onto the Laney precisely for jobs like this. If the other bands hear 'yes there's backline but it's a POS 165W Laney' they might be more inclined to offer to bring their own gear!
I suspect they will hear the "yes there is a backline" and stop listening. Hence your amp will take a battering.
-
Well, he said backline but I know they already have a PA etc there so would just be amps and drums presumably.
Sarah You need to find out if the PA is just a vocal one or if the use it for the instruments as well. If so your Laney will be fine as a stage monitor for bass. Other than that I'd suggest that 300 watts is a working minimum for a band with drums wher ethe backline has to do the bulk of the work.

Mentioned this before but I found a 60's Ric 4001 in its case in the street after a guy had forgotten to load it into his car. I put a note through the house door, called the police and awaited a call from the guy. Anyway at about 6pm the guy called very very relieved. He'd been going to record their latest CD and his manager had picked him up at 7.30 am .. bit of a shock for him. Got to the studio and it was "dude, where's my bass?" followed by a trip to town to buy a new bass (a Ray for full retail ) and a day on the phone for the manager calling all the local places looking for it. Eventually the police gave them my details and they got in touch A very relived bloke.... I tried it and found out I don't fit Ric's any more. Oh and a mate once sent me a picture of a Smith 6 hanging in Crack Converters window for £125 inc case. He was third in the queue the next day and missed it. I suspect the lad that bought it didn't have it long though ....
