1.
I've never had a lesson but I think they would be a great idea. I started because I was in a band with 2 singing guitarists , one left and we had 2 gigs at the weekend. Snip
I'm singing a lot more now and it took me a while to find my "real voice". However I struggle to remember the words .. Any tips? I really don't want to use a music stand.
 2. Nice one Mark

 5.
If you're not organised, your life will fall apart. Your vocalist's life, however, is all worked out for him.
Once again Mr Funk has hit the nail on the head.
 6.
...but when you've paid for those pages, and they are increasingly irrelevant, then you're only choice is to cease to pay for those pages, no? I'm not trying to strike up social change, just explaining one of the main reasons I increasingly find BGM a very dull read.
Much as I dislike seeing Jonas Bleedin' Hellborg yet again all over my bass mag, and have no desire to ever own anything Warwick, I have to point out that they are the people who really pay for the pages you are reading.. Your fiver wouldn't keep it in production very long ...
 7. PS your myspace link from your sig doesn't work
 8. Ah .. Well, that's different ... That's not a playing problem that's a "on the verge of something big so it's time to shed the wasters" situation. Dump them both. You've given them good reason and chance to sort it out and they haven't. You've used up the nice options. I'll do your festivals. When can I audition for the sax job?
 9.
I'd agree with this as well. The lighting on both shows was wrong. On the first one the venue didn't turn on the stagelights until halfway through the set! On the second one the venue didn't turn down the houselights enough. The trouble is that we didn't have control over that at either venue. I wonder if there are still ways in which bands can take this into their own hands to an extent, even when playing on a packed bill of several bands.
Hum.. Sounds tricky. I can't see it being popular to get the broom handle out and take 10 minutes changing the position of the ceiling PAR cans before you start your set if you are band number 3 of 5... Pub bands should never, ever play without "stage" lights though. Wiki entry on lights.

 11.
What shop was it in and would they have a website? The only shop i know in Cardiff is Cranes and their site shows a couple of nice 70's Jazzes I am intrigued by these smaller bodied Fender Jazzes. BB
There's 4 decent bass/guitar/gear shops in Cardiff and this was in Cranes. They don't have much of their stock on their website. They had two that I could see (they have about 50 basses at any one time) One at about £999 and one at £1399 I think. Not sure why the difference,
 12. Any more views? Still good?
 13.
Haven't had a chance for a good look through yet (although I've had a good look at Melissa Auf der Maur, and I'm not usually one for ogling women... ), but it looks like there's plenty in there. Hooray! One niggle (it's becoming a monthly tradition for me ): I know Ms Auf der Maur has a lower-case "d" on "der"... but when it's set all-caps? Really? MELISSA AUF dER MAUR looks really, really odd on the cover. OK, that's major, major nit-picking, but it's the first thing I saw.
The first thing?
 14.
Yes, it looks like they're using the same bodies as the Am.Std this time. It's good business sense to delete the smaller body shape they used to use for the Deluxe model.
Ahh that explains it. I was in the guitar shop today and saw what I though was one of these new ones - Delux Natural Jazz bass, US, 22 frets, 4 knobs, including a stack. However the bodies were tiny, down sized headstock and the strap peg wasn't over the 12th fret .... Didn't try one but it looked, er, different. That must have been the older model.
 15. One of the members of one of the bands I play in and organise gigs for asked me to email him and his wife on regular basis re gig dates, status of un confirmed enquiries, etc because he had a problem keeping his work, personal, family and wife's diary all synced.... I suggested he get his own damn sheeeeeeeet together as, as far as I know, I am not his mother or PA... It worked but I do still make sure he has all the details of each gig a month and a week beforehand.
 16.
I'd agree with all the above. My only point of contention (if it could be called that) is with number 2. Its even better to have no dead air at all, just run straight from song to song, zero silence, zero talking other than an brief "Y'alright!" between say the third and forth song of the set... That's proper hard to do, and tbh I've only seen one local band manage it really well, but they just blew everyone else away whenever they played as a result, the audience energy would just lift with each intersong segue. Very very skilled at their craft they were....
Excellent thread, Mr Funk. I agree with the points made so far. I'd add that lighting is crucial. There's a Wiki on band lighting that makes a huge difference to how good you look in a pub. Basically for one pub gig fee you can get yourself a few lights that make you look 300% better and much more professional. Thanks, fellow 51m0n, for making one of my "cracked record" points about removing the dead air. Holding patterns and segues, planned and rehearsed talkie bits, training your front person to be a front person etc. So many bands decry segues but they really work and as a consequence the band looks so much more confident, professional and polished than one stopping between each tune. Anyone near Bristol/Bath/Cheltenham should go and see Rich's band The Soul Destroyers for an excellent example of how to do it... and the effect it has on what is basically a covers band but one which sells out 400 capacity venues and has a following. It works very well at battles of bands to lift your band above the rest as you look slick and rehearsed and entertaining. Filming your gigs is also great for finally convincing the guitarist that tuning up audibly between every number is not such a good idea. (see the other thread) However, film can't capture atmosphere and the vibe of the audience and you (the bass player) should not really worry overly that anyone in the audience is watching you and all you do. Well they won't be watching you as much as you are in the replay. So if you look a bit off the planet sometimes don't worry about it too much. Don't tell the rest of the band that, though, or they will never address their shortcomings
 17.
Ah, that's more like it. To just say 'nice'... would be an understatement!
Yeah. . Bigger pictures will be the norm after a revision in a month or so. It should have a lot more basses as they get the time upload them.

Everyone in the band put in a lot of work and we're pleased with how our first gig turned out! Snip the Vids Hope you enjoy them! Thanks for the encouragement so far. Craig
First gig? Wow! Very nice stuff. Great singer (and BV's) fab sound and then I discovered the HD version and it got even better... Great bass sound too. Thanks for that.
 23.
So where in Yorkshire is the biggest selection of basses? or the densest area of guitar shops? where I can get me mitts on some basses so i can narrow my choices down a bit. Or do I need to head south?
http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...shire+bass+bash Yorks area bassbash. Sadly, You'll need a TARDIS as it was last weekend! I'd suggest you invest the time and petrol to and take a day and visit Bass Direct near Warwick. There you will be able to see if a £3000 bass and a top rig are really worth it to you, try a good selection of well set up and papered new basses from £300 up to £way past stupid He also has loads of good used basses and amps. You get top quality attention and knowledge with no pressure, no shop floor shredders or "I'm just doing this to pay for my beer habit" staff and no "well we only do set up whe you've bought it" basses... No brainer, really.
 24.
... and back up AGAIN for £43,000!
I guess that just reflects the fluctuations in the price of Gold. ....
 25.
Si, looks like the site is down at the moment. I've been trying to get on for about the last 30 minutes. Hopefully a temporary server glitch or summat. Steve
Me too. They know and are working on it.
