I changed my Weeping Demon WD7 for a Dunlop 105Q last year and really like the relative simplicity. The WD7 did too much. All I wanted was a wah. The 105Q does just that.

IMHO it's getting better by the month but I still don't understand why in a country with a great many fine luthiers making custom basses the Woodshed series has featured a couple of US based ones. Leave them to Bass Player and show of the Great British Luthiers, I reckon.

Want me to add in some exciting "facts"? -
Sounded Like they don't have parts. Are you expecting them to just play the right thing in the right places without a plan? That's tough for hornies to do. Unlike guitarists and bass players Horn players usually learn to play in ensembles where someone tells them exactly what to play. Sounds like your people need to sit down and work out the notes, runs and harmonies to do, in that song at least.

I never bought a case and had several email exchanges with them so I guess you take the risk. I think Rondo have the SX market in the US sewn up. They must sell thousands of the things and probably buy at very good prices from the manufacturer. I can't see them selling all of their basses at cost price, and for years, somehow. Anyway if the Rondo SX's I've had (and played) are anything to go by, the Pirate would be well worth it. Pop on a Gotoh 201 or 203 (which I did with mine) and it will be even better. [edit: The Pirate has a chunky bridge rather than a bent tin one so probably don't need to do this mod] Easily as good as the normal Squiers. Not sure about the VM's. I've not played any. Resale value would be dire though Beware the headstock shape changes though. Very old = Fender shape, medium old = Lakland hook shape, new = very smoth, a bit like a Peavey.
So, deal agreed Sunday. Bass arrived 7.40 am Tuesday. Should have the wrapping undone by Friday(that's a lie, but to damage this bass in transit would have been bordering on impossible) AMAZING. I love the bass, it is better than described, did I say I love the bass? Simon, I simply cannot praise you enough, superb, easy transaction. I am immensely grateful to you for providing me with a Precision with a slimmer neck, that I can play. Did I say I love the bass? Now, where's that stupid grin removal cream? TOP,TOP guy. Many thanks, Karl.
Gosh! Thanks Karl.
Original price of the bass is: £86.16 W/postage to the UK, price goes up to: £140.89. Plus 17.5%VAT, 3.5% duty, and £15 "handling charge", price goes up to: £185.48 delivered. That's using current exchange rates. It's likely that a buyer's card (or other payment method) will not calculate the exchange rate so favourably, and the price will go up a bit. On top of that, you have: Let's say that it's $60 for a suitable case. I'm not sure whether Rondo will ship in a soft case which will be cheaper, but this is a typical hard case price from the Rondo site. The price paid to Rondo goes up to: £196.15. Add in VAT, duty, and "handling charge", and you get a full price of approximately £252.34.
Sure. Having bought three SX basses from Rondo I'd say you don't need a case as they know how to wrap and ship safely. Waltons in Dublin are asking 250 Euro, plus shipping and tax, duty and handling (on top of Eu250!) http://waltons.ie/Product/View.aspx?id=11072 So yes, it will cost you about £180 from Rondo. Odd that Rondo can sell it for £90 in the US and Waltons charge nearly £250 in Ireland. I assume Waltons get them from a direct importer, same as Rondo. I did see one on eBay a few years ago so they may be around. There's an SX scorpion jazz bass on t'bay right now for a tenner with 6 days to go. Not as cool (and they may assume you are a Scorpions fan)

Guitarist tunes between numbers - what to do?
Guitarists inane widdling and tuning up between songs, is what finally made me leave the band I was with for a few years. It's unbearable when one guitarist does it, but in that particular band there were five of them.............it was HELL.
5 well behaved guitarists woud be tough enough -

The recurrent theme here is that just about everyone but the guitarist knows he should take responsibility for his tuning without disrupting the flow of the gigs. How do we get through to them? -
I do agree that you can get your parts down at home and use the rehearsal to iron out these things..patches at volumes might need more tweaking than at home. We have a good bunch of lads who know what they are doing and can get the parts down quickly, the rehearsal is enough to get it working so the music comes together really quickly..one rehearsal for the more basic structured songs without masses of BV's and then we play it in on the gig. The bands lacks time together which is where we fall down...to our mind..the audience doesn't seem to notice, thankfully. In an ideal world we would have more time but we just don't....plus a screwed intro is something we can laugh at. We will stop the song and start again... That takes any tension out of things. We can play well enough to not be maimed by things like that... We might want to be slick but also don't want to dissapear up our backsides... I can't knock our gigs upto now....but these little things are the things that get left to last... We are talking about pubs/clubs here, though.
Sounds like you have the right attitude for what you are doing - good enough plus tweaks as you go along. That works well enough. My suggestions are general, really. I've seen too many bads fall down on these bits when their playing is pretty good overall. Too many people think the playing is the only important bit. -
you are joking... it is hard enough to get to a rehearsal as it is. We just don't get the time collectively Anyway, I don't think things need to that contrived.... it shouldn't be a problem and we have had nothing but positive reviews. It is just an issue that the band members notice. I probably wish it wasn't so but with all the things that we could have as issues as band , this doesn't rate very highly. We'll talk about it but if we relax into the gig a bit more, then this will just fade away. We aren't going to have a bad gig just because of this aspect.. but in an ideal world....??
Yeah, it's a part of my "how to be a really good live band really fast" strategy. Rather than learn how to do all the non-playng bits of a stage show infront of an audience, do as much as possible in private beforehand. However I think a lot of bands expect people to be able to do things like work out amp setings, vocal harmonies, footpedal and patch settings etc on the fly and fast in a general rehearsal where the priority is something else. This can breed resentment from those standing about doing nothing whilst people twiddle and test etc. I've heard "why can't he work out his pedal patches at home?". Well you can get close but the final changes you need the whole band, volume and show situation to check things and resolve clashes. If the rehearsal (or a section of it) is designated for that then the on stage results should be a lot better. -
