For standard pickup designs it usually requires a whacking great trench to be taken out of the middle of the bass to let the pickup move. Unless someone can build a very flat profile (ie shallow) pickup, the only other way is to put a pickup on both sides of the string which is what happened with the Ovation etc. referred to earlier. I wonder if it could be achieved with an optical pickup though?
Sliding Pickup? No problem. 3.
Hey there! That's a beautiful bass, and if i do remember correctly i was going to buy that very bass and i would've done if i hadn't already bought one from sound control in newcastle that very day! Playing well? I should think so! I really should've looked in RockBox before i went through to newcastle, but there you go! Rich
I have a feeling he probably doesn't play it much any more
bass_ferret wants a 7 string deep inside
I think if he gets too close to some of the debaters here he may well get that experience
 12.
absolutely, I've had no reply to my 'I'm interested, tell me more' PM and decided against sending a 'we're wise to your little game, sunshine' as it'd be pointless.
You might get a "sale fell through, are you still interested" note later ..

 14. We can do nothing but be glad we are part of a community like this .. Sadly as long as there are people who will bid on something like this without doing the basic checks the scammers will continue to do it. I was playing with a similar rip-off seller for a few weeks just to see what excuses he could come up with for avoiding the normal stuff - more pictures, cash on pick up, seeing it first, that sort of things, but it got boring.
 15. This explains Floating Thumb pretty well. I think lots of "5 and up" players use it rather than pickup or bottom string anchoring. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPVMBPmrblU I'm in the process of learning floating thumb as well as alternating finger technique after many years of using a technique I call "making it up as I go along" .. I can't say I've noticed a huge improvement yet but I see it as foundation building for better playing. Never too late but it is pretty hard to undo muscle memory. Starting out I'd certainly make sure I nailed these two techniques early on. As it says on the Warwick linked above: "Q: You are teaching us a two-finger technique, where you always alternate fingers. Yet, I see many famous players who use one finger, or they don't always alternate. Which way is right? A: There really is no "right" way. Some amazing bassists play perfectly well using a wide variety of techniques. I am reminded about a conversation I had with a known player who had a rather erratic right hand style. I asked him if he thought his technique was the best way. He said, "No way! It took me over 20 years to get to where I could play quickly and smoothly. Kids that learn the right way to do it can get there in a matter of months." That really gave me food for thought. " I think that's the point ..
 16.
With Jon's work it easy to get carried away - they are all pretty special, but some just 'glow' - and I think you have got one of those ones OG - at least looking at the phot's anyway. Well done!
Thanks BeLow, I think so too It's a tad difficult to be objective, of course, but I think both my bass babies are beautiful. What was a real surprise is how great the headstock looks. As Rich said it's almost worth the price alone ... Jon's new chrome signature is a very nice touch too.
 17.
Did they play 'When the boat comes in' ?
I think they did some cool tunes like Ice Ice baby, Night swimming, maybe? Float on, Don't rock teh boat baby,
 18.
Looks like Jon has worked his magic again, cracking bass!, am i right in thinking this one was completed rather quickly......... for a change
No it was a long slow build but that was agreed from the start. I had to save up I didn't start the build diary until a long way into the build time That was fine by me. I already had a stonkin' bass at home
 19.
Looks just like that one he has available to buy from stock on his site, looks good! More photos would be cool though.
Ah yes you mean this one - yes the top on that was certainly instrumental in my choice of top wood. I'd already decided on a very light dotless fingerboard It's not obvious but the body is subtly different as a result of the 21 frets vs 24, which means teh distance between the bridge and the end of the neck is longer, therefor ethe body is longer from strap lock to heel .. It's also wider across the base as it has more forearm wood as I like the "width" you get in a P bass.
 20.
Mate. That is disgracefully lovely. I knew it was 'the big day', so I got off the blower a bit quick!! Love the Singlecut pic too..
Thanks mate it's lovely I was very worried about it when I saw it with no finish .. It looked really really plain Mighty thoughtful of you to let Jon off the phone .. we still didn't have enough time We had a fine time .. Lot some very nice basses at Jons, plus Poptart had a W&T and Nordy along for the ride, plus Rich's Shuker, both mine and, by far the most notable bass there by far, my heavily mojo'd white Fender P Lyte Saw some possible fingerboard woods for your project Got some pics here if you wannnnnnem ...
