'classic' stingray vs stingray - are they worth it?
Ou7shined replied to zero9's topic in Bass Guitars
Is there much of a price difference between a Pre-EB and a Classic at the moment? I know which I'd go for.
Me too, without question.
so translated... this bass will give you.... 1) something that might increase the sustain 2) something to stop the sustain 3) softer versions of maple less suitable for a bass neck than non figured 4) a shiney thing 5) a different sticker on it 6) another shiny thing 7) pretty colours. and 8) possibly a 5th string
-
Very happy with my natural oiled version.

Considering the unpredictable nature of flame maple, a pair of stiffening rods is a very good idea.

'classic' stingray vs stingray - are they worth it?
You turn the bass all they way up? I normally don't go beyond a quarter of its travel, or a bit more perhaps.
I roll exactly the same as Pete. -
I can admire/appreciate it when someone creates something out of some planks of wood, perhaps to a lesser degree when someone screws together some parts (I'm as guilty as the next guy on this count), but the whole 'My Shuker/ACG build' thing rubs me the wrong way. I have nothing against these luthiers, they do fine work, but surely anyone with a few bob to spare can get someone to build something for them, but the poster isn't the one getting splinters. P
Couldn't agree more. The build diary section should indeed be spilt in two. One for self builds and one for pro builds. Both would be equally as interesting but for fundamentally different reasons. And maybe a third section for minimal mods (my new pickguard, I screwed this neck to this body etc) which I'd most likely not subscribe to.
I feel you are holding back there Rich, say what you mean
You could be right Mike. I'm in one of my moods today (lot of pain) maybe I should pretend my internet is like my o2 sim card and switch it off today.

In a nutshell. Some people can hear the difference (and can remember the difference without having to refer to recordings), some can't. Sometimes a portion of the the latter group think they can hear it. I'm pretty sure that no one from the subset that can hear the difference will deny being able to do so. If you can't hear the difference, there's no point in saying that it doesn't exist.

The porn section is one of those I hardly ever check out.... because there is some real sh*t porn out there. How does replacing a pickguard on a stock bass make it porn? I'm just as "grumpy old man" with the build diary section too, where screwing a few components together somehow constitutes a build.
Maybe it has something to do with the fact that Buffalo Bill is modelling it .....
Haha. "It puts the Washburn around it's neck. It does this whenever it is told." "Mister... my family will pay cash. Whatever ransom you're askin' for, they pay it." "It puts the Washburn around it's neck. or else it gets the hose again."
... If I have the opportunity to test a given set of pickups through many different rigs, I'll probably have a more informed idea about the inherent sound of the pickups, but I'm keeping an open mind on this one.
That's so true. How many pups have been lucky enough to have been auditioned through a transparent sounding rig... how many have been rejected because of the amp or cabs characteristics being more dominant?
That's it, that's the phrase I was looking for to describe the fralin's on the Geddy
Yep Fralin's are a particularly good example.

It depends on your ears. I know bassists who can't tell the difference between makes of bass let alone the components used yet they will go ahead and tell you such and such sounds punchy or has more mids etc. etc.. When gauging this sort of thing you need to go into it with an open mind (in fact a fair degree of scepticism is advisable) and grip on reality. I am very pro "expensive" pups because time after time it has been proven to me that you can tell the difference... and that difference isn't as slight or subjective as tone woods or something either. What they always bring is an extra dimension or layer to the tone which those produced on the cheap can't. If you disagree with this fine, go stick a £10 set of pups off ebay in your bass and we'll say no more.
See the video above. It would make a very nice spare bass. They're very decent build quality made in the same factory in China the CV Squiers are made. I'd buy it but I already have two nice Jazzes.
Aye but the video above is for a Farida. -
I've noticed a lot of other Stingrays are getting replies yet this topic has been left untouched - is it a lack of pictures or because I have no posts? I can provide more pics or proof of genuineness if needs be. I'd really like to try and sell it this week.
Some more pics wouldn't harm your sale plus you started out with unrealistic expectations of the current market (check out those other threads for an idea of where the market is just now). Apart from that it's just a waiting game until the right buyer comes along mate. If you want a quick sale you'll have to pick a price that's too good to refuse.
