I love my 2 band Ray MattM, Bass on full and use the treble pot as a tone control...
Yep, same here.
I've been toying with the idea of a Sub Sterling (Jazz neck lover, y'see). Any views on how it compares soundwise to the Ray-type Sub?
I don't know much about them except there's no series / parallel switch. I guess it would sound close to a 3eq 'ray.
Me and EBS freak nearly ruined my (brand new at the time) EBS pre amp that's in my Jazz! It's a bit battle scarred but we managed to get onto a bit of something and taped it over, phew! Sounds ace too there's always a risk when fiddling with delicate stuff but it's fun.
Haha totally. It's an adrenaline rush. EXTREME SOLDERING
Remember I'm more clued up getting power to the soldering iron than what you use one for!
Yep that's the tricky bit. I'm sure you'll agree that not everyone would be capable of such fine work. Also don't assume I've not done it either Pete. I've got a few repaired pup jobs under my belt now.
Looks like a bit of wire and a few blobs of solder to me?
It does doesn't it.
Just to beat mcnash and ou7shined to their glory it appears a sub 4 is series wired and a sub 5 is parallel hence sub 5's sounding more like a real Ray if you like. From their photos in the calling all Sub owners thread it wouldn't take more than 20 minutes to convert your own sub pup to parallel instead of series and see how you get on with it after, this will cost you 0 pence to try. If you like it you could even put a series/parallel switch in somewhere to keep both sets of tones.
You'd think. Try this at your peril... or get someone who knows what they are doing to do it for you. It's a very tricky solder job. Personally I wouldn't bother. My 'ray's original pup is locked away safe and sound. I've been using a '03 SUB pup in my 'ray for some time now. I've A/B'ed my 'ray with a few others and it raises a smile when I explain how my phatt sounding "all original MM" kick their asses. Ah well that's the cat out of the bag. You'll all be doing it now.
Ha, I just pipped you two with your super knowledge by suggesting the op in the replacement sub active pup thread just re-solder the stock pup to make it sound more like a proper ( ) Ray should! I totally stole your wisdom
It's easier said than done though Pete.
You guys are top fiddlers! (and smiley code masters) I wonder if anyone has an SR4 with a sub 4 pup slipped in by accident?
I know someone.... but it wasn't by accident.
-
...I'm of a sceptical and suspicious nature... and I would say that for the SUBs they may have used anything and everything they had available. The goal was to build a cheaper ($1000) version of the Stingray. The cheapest pickup is the one you have spares of, extra stock not needed, etc... Maybe. The thing is... was there any MM bass that used an alnico pickup wired in series exclusively?
It was the same bloke making the SUB pups as did the 'ray ones.... Can't remember his name right now (I'm watching Memento which is hard enough to concentrate on without one eye on me laptop. ) Have a look here it might answer your question.

That is a Stingray pup. Looks like we may have uncovered the reason why the SUB 5 sounds like a 'ray and not a SUB.
-
Not sure about the SUBs, unless mine was unsual. My SUB5 came with a replacement pickup on, and I was given the original also. It only had 2 wires, so can't play with parallel/series combinations, but it measured just over 2Kohm so I assumed it was wired in parallel. Just checked my file (I write down silly stuff like that): 2.07 Kohm. Exactly the same as the alnico Seymour Duncan replacement, it turns out.
Here's a pic I took myself Jose. One is a SUB pup the other is a Stingray one. It's fairly easy to work out which is which just by looking.

So my brand new battery cover plopped onto my door mat. I used the standard email address of the dunlop uk site but changed the title to "tech support". The next day a nice guy/girl from Strings and Things called Alex got emailed me wanting to see a pic of the specific type of battery cover. 15 minutes later he/she confirmed they had that type in stock and would send it out to me FOC. Well done guys. I wish I done this years ago when my 105Q cover died instead of making my own one.
These have come up before and people seemed to think he was alright. He's a one man business based in Bath I believe Sorry, I don't get it. Is that good or bad? A scale length for a 4003 bass is 84.5 cm (33 1/4'') anyway.
Ah my bad Tim. I didn't know they were ss.
Scale length:845mm (33.27 inches)
Just in case you didn't notice.

Looks like those cream covers and/or pickguard don't sit too well together - they're just jammed together. -

Exciting. Looking forward to seeing the surprise paint finish.
nah lol just wondering which is better lol i have heard good things about CV basses
I've not played a CV but I dare say the rave reviews of the neck are based on comfort and feel rather than tone.

Is this a wind up?
Reminds me of some chap that came to look at a jazz I was selling last year. He came in, bashed the hell out of it and then decided he was really after a ray. Took plenty of restraint not to insert the aforementioned jazz where the pope don't rollerskate!
In the rectory?
Something about that smiley just made me laugh like a complete snorting twat. Love it!
It's the little things in life that matter. I hope the "snorting twat" is meant as an adjective, or maybe a noun... god forbid it's a verb.

Well it looks like I've found a bass vid that BC won't slate. I didn't actually know it was tuition vid, I just came across it by accident. I'm glad you guys liked it too.
