1. I'm not 100% sure about this but shouldn't the serial be on the jack plate?
2. Damn it I was going to say Sabre this afternoon. The thing is you take the Sabre to it's logical conclusion and what do you get?.... G&L L-2000.
3. What does it matter? If you keep on bashing it about like that it'll be matchwood in no time. Seriously though it does kinda look like it? Where did you buy it? Does it look like plywood at all on the bashed bit on the side?
4.
I see a bit of a trend forming here,Fender,sunburst,rosewood,mojo..........................it must mean only one thing.
I'd have a '66 Stingray or G&L if there were such a thing.
5.
Glad I'm not the only one who thinks it looks better the "wrong" way round. Got grief for that when I sold my 51 RI....
Haha I had some tins out the other day for a certain P bass project and tried the 51 bridge cover on upside-down because it naturally flows that way then put them back again as I could be arsed with the "you're not doing it right" backlash.
6.
I thought this one summed up 1973 pretty well
Why, did they all put their ashtrays on upside-down that year? edit : ah ok not the first to spot it.
7. I'm not knocking those ready built looms per se. They are great for a novice tinkerer to fit if the only alternative is taking it to a tech to be repaired. But every time someone extols the notion that cloth covered wire and fat pots sound better than plastic sleeved and skinny pots a wee bit of our credibility as a good knowledge base dies.
8. 1966 P. The blanket would come in handy during the winter too... for me lumbago.
9. I've been pretty underwhelmed by every Fender bass I've owned. You read so much about how fecking brilliant they are on forums then get sucked in. Ok there is some basis to what they say but then I learned to face the fact that opinions expressed by those with different needs and tastes to mine need not necessarily be solid fact but more of a point in the right direction. And my Fenders never seemed to live up to the hype. I like the Fender aesthetics (most of my builds are based on that look) which probably explains why I'm so impressed by G&L who kept the look but took the Fender tone to the next level.
10.
....That's a contencious point. There are those who seem convinced that changing a few scraps of wire, two pots and a capacitor is going to turn any old bass into a hi-tech masterpiece. On the other side of the scale there are those who reckon it's all just a pile of old cack and a bit of stripped down flex off of a discarded toaster will do the exact same job...
Very diplomatically put. I know which side guys like you and me who have a better handle on these things would come down on.
11.
Did you like it? I could take pint glasses off tables with the open E. If only Gibson could have found a body shape that matched the headstock, or vice versa.
I could well imagine that. I thought it was ok, (ignoring some uneven action across the strings) it felt very playable and the dusty end became especially inviting. The hog bod was a proper let down though, I actually remarked at the time that it looked homemade - the pup routs were crazy outta line and there were unusual choices at rounding the edges off around the "difficult bits" in the horn cutouts. The sound (as you said) was on the whumpy side but not totally saggy with it. A great rocking/blues bass. I didn't mind the '80's "sword and sorcerer" styling (wouldn't look out of place on Discworld ) but the in-line controls seem out of place with it's otherwise organic looks. Here endeth my bijou mini-review-ette.
12. Bumperoo Couple of yt vids demo this guy's in the zone
13.
I had a Gibson IV which had an ebony fretboard. It looked really smooth and dark and felt great to play. Like others here, I think any contribution it made to the tone was overwhelmed by the all-mahogany set neck construction and TB pickups.
It was a gibby iv that I was on about too.
14. I played one the other night (a twin bucker gibson) the overall basic tone of the bass was "bassy". Havng no reference point, I don't know if a maple board would have zingyed it up any... so my post isn't any help other than to say "yes" to the title. I'll get my coat.
15. If you go into the original thread and type "bump" (or anything really) as a new reply, it will go to the top of the page and you won't need to start any more spurious threads.
16. Go with what you've heard.
17.
That will be the ou7shined Pingray then I think the P pup has to be pushed nearer the neck to keep the MM sweet spot? Calling Rich....
That's right Pete, the two pups occupy some of each other's space so the best solution (and to retain the most authenticity) is to reverse the P keeping the the E/A side in it's original spot. It actually seems a better solution to me (scientifically as well as tonally) as you can ping a nice harmonic over each pole piece in the reversed P but it is discordant over the D/G part in the original position. The result is quite literally 2 distinct basses in one. This is the reasining behind why I suggested the Sandberg earlier (to get the 2 bass tones from one bass)... although their emphasis seems to have been with keeping the P in the original position and placing the MM pup where it looks nice.
18. Sandberg Cali PM? The MM pup is about an inch out to give real MM goodness, although some owners claim it can do a Stingray... the one I tried didn't... but then I'm dead anal about the Stingray sound.
19. G&L L-2000 = versatility personified. (pic added) classic styling too
20. I bought an SX body off Phil. Deal went sweet as a nut. Arrived by courier all bubble wrapped up to the nines in a posh Cambridge Audio box no less. Great fella to deal with. Cheers mate. Rich.
21. Like I said make a day of if. Go and have a chin wag with one of our bass-maker gods and have a gander a some of the basses he's working on. You'll likely get your bass back there and then too if he's expecting you. I don't want to cast aspersions on your local luthier either but "raised frets" from the 12th fret up would suggest to me a tweak of the tr is all that's needed. But hey I'm 500 miles away and he's had it in his hands.
22. Dude I cannot imagine for one minute that Jon would let a bass go without a fret dress. I know you're a bit away from him but as you are prepared to pay for someone else to do remedial work why not jump in the car and head over to Jon who will sort all your woes for free. Make a day if it.
23. This is the best I can do given the constraints. Still, it does the job.
24.
Too big for avatar
Hang on I'll try reduce the frame rate.
