1. Guitarist--doubling Double Bass---well versed into Django / Gypsy Swing style seeking fellow minded musicians. All instruments. Northumberland area. Send me a PM.
2. Hi 3below Thanks for the reply. The EUB in question is a quality instrument--an Eminence. Being well versed with banjo's & guitars these instruments do not seem to have such curvature as the Eminence bass neck, they have neck relief (very slight curvature near the nut end of the neck which is different to a warped neck). The EUB has the deepest part of the curvature at the octave G on the G string. The strings I have used vary from steel to synthetic. On double bass I have a pretty high action so the curvature does not really bother me--but I wondered if the bass neck works on the same principle as banjo's and guitars--wondering if the bass does have a warped F/B. Just for the record should all string instrument fingerboards--guitars/banjo's/violin's/cello's etc.---work on the same principle of slight neck relief near the nut end?---or are they all different 'breeds' ?
3. Your advice most welcome. My EUB I suspect--though not sure---has a warped F/B. 2 photos are attached. A straight edge is placed on to F/B from the nut to the end of the F/B. A curve is seen--with no strings attached. With strings under tension I would suspect even more of a curve. Time to re-shoot the F/B? Am I correct in thinking that with strings under tension there should be a very slight curve?
4. My '2 cents' worth--if this helps. I have played for many years D/B---Guitar and Banjo. I have spent a lot of time experimenting with action / bridges / tailpieces and strings. All 3 instruments have the same conclusion--the lower the action the less volume and tone. Having said that every instrument has it's 'sweet spot'--not to high and not to low--spend time & experiment! Also comes into the equation the type of music you wish to play--the sound your after--more experimenting-----------------------------------
5. I have had a GK MB150S for many years--great sound--never let me down yet. But again depends on pickup / size of band. Used on the 'jazzier' style of bands.
6. One of the best: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFTqVHEJZ0A

8. I agree with Bilbo, excellent post Hector. Well put & plenty 'to go at'. Thanks everybody for your great input to my question--much appreciated.
9. Many thanks 'tinyd' for the Chris Fitzgerald video link. Chris Fitzgerald is a great teacher--comes over extremely well--easy to understand. Every jazz bassist should have his book.
10. Thanks Dad3353 for your very useful info. Much appreciated. How much do you think the rest of the band listen to the bass player-say-% wise: a) Notes Keeping good time c) Intonation d) 'Feel' for the band
11. When improvising over a chord sequence--either backing the front line or taking a solo--one has a vast amount of notes to choose from--what with chord tones / passing notes / chromatic lines / endless scales. I realise that one has to keep whithin the confinements of the chord being played. But with all the choices of above is it common to go out of the bounderies of the chord?--to play an ear pleasing phrase--using any note as long as it has the basic frame work of the chord?--notes that do not belong to that chord? Hope the question makes sense. On really fast tempo tunes--such as early bebop--can the bass lines make sense to the front line or even to the bass player him or herself? (If they can keep up!) And take a chorus or two!
12. Hi invicta Many thanks for your reply. Yes--the Risley bass 'do' was great last year--highly recommended if on this year --nice to hear the basses with all the different set-up's and to meet you all--a lot to take in. Will be trying 'Innovation' on my EUB. Have tried them on my acoustic basses and liked them. Just wondered how they would react on an EUB.
13. Thank you fellow Basschat'ers for your replies. Much appreciated. Synthetic strings seems the way to go if one wants to get more of a softer sound as opposed to the more harsher sound of the metal string.
14. Anybody tried synthetic strings on their EUB?---example 'Innovation'. Or other make of synthetic string. Did they work for you? Good sound?
15. Hi Paul The edition I do not know--purchased from a fellow Basschatter. The clamp looks plastic--the loop is smooth plastic--the playing surface is a rough textured surface. The E string is pretty thick. Hope this helps.
