Anybody going to the 'DB Bash' who is playing all gut strings? I have yet to hear gut 'live' as would like to try. ----temped to buy---but the £££££'s!--------
Many thanks gentlemen for your input to my question. I have a GK MB150 & an Acoustic Image Coda 3 combo. I find--to my ears anyway--that the GK does have a bit of a boxy sound compared to the AI--the GK having a bit more 'umph' (A rounder sound). To get the same sound on the AI--without the 'boxy'nes'---the bass knob is turned right up and the treble knob turned right down. The choice between the two amps would be the type of band you are playing in.
I play in the hot rhythmic jazz style of the likes of Freddie Green & Gypsy Jazz. Into: Swing / Dixieland / Gypsy Jazz / Mainstream jazz. Based in the High Peak area (Derbyshire). Looking for the right band and gigs. Will travel.

I use a GK MB150 with my DB fitted with Ehrlund Pickup. Good sound.
Could that be bettered by using a separate amp. & speaker cab? (To perhaps get a fuller sound.) Do separates deliver that?
If so what do you use? and did you change from a combo? What have you tried?
Gigs I do are mainly medium / large rooms. (No Glastonbury or Hyde Park gigs in the book!)
Thanks Daf for the trial of the 'Super Silvers'. Wanting more of that 'Old School' sound I thought I would give them a try. Yes, I liked them-so much so I ordered 2 sets--one for my 3/4 19th century German bass and a set for my Eminence EUB--they suited me well on both instruments. Good volume & tone across the board--not to loose and not high tension--in my opinion a well matched set. Gets me closer to that 'Old School' sound.
Hi Clarky
I have a 3/4 late 19th century German bass. My '2 cents worth' :
I am a pizz. player Tried many different sets of strings over the years. Have finely settled on Super Silvers. Regarding Innovation I have tried Silver Slaps---found them to 'loose'---tried Honeys---found them excellent but wanted more of that old school sound. I was recomended to try Super Silvers---and yes found them to be nearer the sound I was after. They seem to be a slighter tension than the Silver Slaps and do not have that metalic 'twang' of metal strings.
But for the moment Super Silvers suit me--but have yet to try gut---------------------one problem-----£££££££££££'s!!
Jazzer. Into Mainstream / Gypsy Jazz / Bluegrass styles. I also play Gypsy Jazz style Rhythm Guitar. Anybody need me? North Derbyshire based--and beyond. If so send me a PM.
The Derbyshire area would suit me fine--not a million miles away for me---but on the 5th October I have something in the diary. Murphy's Law! Would love to meet all you fellow Basschat'ers.
'Life begins 'norf of Watford gap'.
I have tried the 'mystery' G &D strings described above. I have a late 19th century German bass a set of Innovation Honeys which I like--sound & feel good. Always wanted to try a gut G & D though. These came my way to try. I replaced the Honeys G & D with the G & D presumably gut. They sound and feel very good, less tension of course than steel strings. Very smooth and easy to play. I have noticed that the Honeys A & E have slightly have more 'body' and sustain that the G & D so called gut. They do not have tension and feel of nylon which I have tried in the past. The Honey A & E are fairly new so in time they could wear in and become more compatible.
Anyone tried Innovation 'Braided' A & E--verdict?
I have not tried them yet---hope to within the next couple of days. Not tried them as yet as wanting plain gut. As Rabbie posted: 'Bottom line,do they sound good?
Will keep you posted.
Many thanks Jeff for your reply. Each end of each string is wound with black silk/cotton type thread--quite a few inches in length, The tailpiece end is looped-very hard-will not bend--appears like metal. (Does old gut go very hard?) Where the loop joins the string there is a white thread showing under the black thread.
Gut seems 'To be going out of the window'?--so to speak.
Great replies gentlemen. Many thanks.
Acoustic Image combo amp. 'Coda R Series III --- Model: 511AA . Padded Gig Case. Send me a PM with your email address & I can forward photo's. To try & collection in north Derbyshire area.
Sorry gentleman--could not post pic.--due to resizing issue.
Anyway--yes they really are that old as came from a good reliable source. The plain G & D look like a taped string. They seem to have a translucent winding--the winding being uniform. My gut feeling (Definitely no pun intended!) is they are not gut. Thank you for your good knowledge.
I am new to the gut string. I have been given a set to try what I am told are a gut strings.
Should old plain gut strings (Approx. 50 years old) show bad 'frayed' windings? I have a plain G & D which are smooth all the way down--not a 'hair' (If it is hair) out of place. The seem to be uniformaly wound--like a taped string--copper in colour. Would that be gut?The A & E appear to be metal--I am not sure if it has a core.
Should used gut strings show signs of wear on the strings?--that is frayed strings in need of maintenance.
Your expertise most welcome.
