Can you convert a car subwoofer and car amp into a bass rig?
Mr. Foxen replied to stefBclef's topic in Amps and Cabs
Ok so unless I find myself with a room in my house that is small and carpet covered, I shouldn't bother. And if that was the case, it would probably mean that I have a studio, which would mean I would probably have better gear by then. So what to do with it? Cash converters will give me a tenner for both and I doubt ebay will do much better, and I don't want to part with something that I know can produce a lot of bass! Hmmm, maybe I should find a small room to carpet.
Thing is it can't produce a lot of bass. It can fill a very small idealised space with quite a lot of midbass. -
Be careful with bookings on Interparcel this week....

Had a failed pickup through my courier, dunno who was handling that end, because they never showed. -
Is this because of the way the cabinet would have been designed or to do with the actual driver itself?
The driver is massively low sensitivity and relies on the car acting as a controlled listening environment. All funny shape an covered in padding inside sounds like one of those special rooms the use for sound, also its very small. Once you are outside, you don't have those advantages, and other gear is more relevant. -
Spent last night checking out the barefaced stuff and it sounds like I need a dubster and one other cab for highs... I am also playing with the idea of running a 1000w+ power amp, splitting signal via internal crossover.... Anyone else here done this before??
Work around the cab. If you can do 1000w and want highs, then the Big Twin is the one to go for, Dubster is about making a lot of less power and not needing highs. The Big Twin is to convert massive power into massive lows and has its own crossover to be full range. I think xgsjx is thinking of the Big Twin, the Super 12 is the middly aggressive rock cab (which is great for that, but isn't epic lows). Just to show this isn't one of those 'thou shalt have my rig' posts, here's my rig, which is basically what you described, Barefaced 2x15 for lows, and another cab for highs: Kind of different tonal goals, since the tone will effectively delete all of the rest of your band.

Seriously thinking of buying a head weighing 77lbs....
Mr. Foxen replied to franzbassist's topic in Amps and Cabs
Bear in mind you can't compare this to hybrids with a valve preamp and SS power. That ABM pre has a valve in anyway, which is as much as other hybrids have in the pre section. Going 'all valve' would jsut be removing stuff like the EQ, which you can't really do with valves, active valve EQ like on the MK4 Sound Citys isn't that well thought of. -
Which one?
Isn't one yet. I need to speak to them more after the weekend. But some people with money aside for it will put me in a better position to figure what can be done.

Has anyone got some money aside for a very special Matamp?

Like the pots at an angle, makes easier to get the servisol into the hole.

I tend to advise spending more on the cab, and cheaper on the amp. no-one takes the advice but it has good basis. Loads of amps at various levels are pretty much same components, same doesn't apply to cabs.
if i was right handed i'd have that right off you (see what i did there... )
But since you aren't, you left it alone? Fretless bass punk, hmm.
-
That will be because 8x10s can't do subs, sealed cabs aren't suited. You'll want a Bareface cab, a Dubster if you don't want any highs, or a Big Twin if you do, Big Twin will need more power. Alternatively, cheaper option is I have a Bill Fitzmaurice Omni 15 Tallboy, you can have a borrow and see if it works for you.

Hi. What don't you like about your tone at current then? Is it not enough valve amps? Its probably not enough valve amps.
Serial number too! That checks out on guitardater as pukka! Blatant rip off, how can these not be pulled like Ric's?
Some companies are aware the US law doesn't apply to the whole world.

Hit me up when you want the necessary dirty valve amp to make it sound right.

The dodge bit is claiming the item is in the UK, and it isn't. The Chinese exporters do tend make sincere an genuine effort to defraud the HMRC though, so there is a certain sort of honesty there. I think its the Hong Kong lot that are particularly adept, because they are a international trade hub so they know how it all works, and the colonial thing tends to go with a certain degree of sneakiness.
I certainly would if it all went tits up. Have you got the bass yet Oli?
Nah, wasn't far away so hadn't paid on the offchance he'd come through Bristol. Got his email so gonna go not via ebay.

Better getting one of the ones from here, known history etc. Need more info on this one, like if it has Partridge transformers, not all of them did. There are plenty of issues SC120 MKIV can have, easily fixed if you know what you are up to and have the time and parts, but buying those things is expensive, mostly the knowing what you are up to part. They sound very 'valvey' and the preamp is very flexible, which does mean a lot of 'wrong' 'tones', rather than the all the knobs don't really do much EQ on a lot of valve amps. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?app=core&module=search&do=search&fromMainBar=1 -
Bought a hipshot bridge. Easy peasy, fast delivery pretty much caught me unaware.
I've never been a big fan of their stuff anyway, but now? Not if it was the last bass on the planet.
+1 I've had to do a bunch of work to correct their pretty fundamental deficiencies, and usually not well paid work because I pity the people who have to deal with such poorly designed and made instruments so do so out of charity. When as small a 'manufacturer' (in the loosest sense, there's probably a better word, I make stuff in 10s) can produce significantly improved hardware to restore function, you have to think something is seriously wrong with a larger player to not be doing so.
Item location: cardiff, Cardiff, United Kingdom

It's coming to you directly from the factory
One of those guys.
Did you pull the trigger on one then? Pulling an auction is one thing, but withdrawing all support and protection once the auction is over is another thing altogether.
Yeah, only a Retrovibe with a fault, figured an easy fix and flip job.
