  1. You just have to love the levels of support shown on Basschat, with Rob clearly willing to go above & beyond to help out where needed 😂
  2. The JMJ is quite a dark vintage sounding pickup so might work nicely, added advantage is not having to be worried about getting a knock on a pristine bass. The neck feels like a decent Precision size. I’ve no experience of the others but have been so knocked out by the JMJs that I’ll recommend them for ever!
  3. Black Stone Cherry at Islington Assembly Hall on Friday. It was the release day of their latest CD so beforehand there was a signing event (I didn’t do this). They’d decided they wanted to play smaller venues like when they started coming over here and in my opinion their sound suits these much more than the Wembley Arena size venues. They played just over an hour and a half, only downside for me was they didn’t play Things My Father Said which is one of my faves.
  4. I’ve just got in from a Black Stone Cherry gig. The guitarists used various guitars, Gretsch, PRS, Fender, Gibson, the bassist used Stingrays and various different types of Fenders. The band sounded pretty much the same throughout. So if a band sounds the same with different brands of instruments then yes, very unlikely that different bridges or pickups would be noticeable at that volume.
  5. Rotosound steel rounds for years, loved the sound of them when worn in. Warwick Red Label steel rounds, in my last band I needed the fresh new string sound and these kept that much better than the Rotos. Elixir steel rounds, play and feel great, out of the pack sound like steel rounds that have been played for a week or two and retain this for about a year.
  6. Decent amps, and a good price
  7. I’ve just picked up one of these - thanks @fretmeister - used it this evening at band practice and agree it really helps tame the low end. I’ve had a good few compressors but this one just seems to work for me, with hardly any compression on, just at 9 o’clock. From reading reviews this seems how most people tend to use it.
  8. In my opinion the extra outlay for the EVO IV 600 is well worth it, it has the same feel to the sound that you mention but due to the extra eq is more versatile and feels “sharper”, more precise.
  9. I`m primarily a pick player, occasionally at home play finger-style, when I do it`s the middle finger that does the most, if I can get away with just using one finger middle it will be as I find I have a steadier attack with that one, whereas I have a tendency to pluck too hard with the index finger. But overall it`s just for enjoyment, I`m very unlikely to ever play finger-style in a band.
  10. From the amps mentioned I`ve had the Markbass CMD121P and for such a little amp it had plenty of power, I used it in a band with drums, 2 basses, 3 gtrs, keyboards & 2 lead vox, it never lacked in regular pub-sized venues. Having heard the Fender Rumble 500 combo in use it`s an amp I`d also check out, very nice full rich sound.
  11. Only with one girl at work, she is a great singer though as she’s now married & got a daughter she no longer does anything music wise other than listen to Busted (and buy everything they put out). But she’s the only person I chat to who has some form of understanding.
  12. I was chatting to our producer last week about his machine gun guitar, which I remember from his appearance with Morrisey on The Jonathan Ross Show. I looked up the clips on Youtube and it had a great sound, how does the bass version compare?
  13. I like the black one
  14. I love my M80s but I’ve never worn them on my back, I just use them as a regular case, just one which is slightly smaller & lighter so more convenient.
  15. Fingers crossed they’ll be more reliable than the PFs, agree that the sounds are a bit un-inspiring but then I’ve often found that the Ampeg tone in isolation is just that, but once in the mix they just seem to work so well.
  16. I’m not sure about snobbery but from my experiences in gigging primarily punk & Oi (originals) I’ve seen far more violence in “regular cover venues” than on those scenes.
  17. When I’ve played in Europe every venue asked for a set list for these reasons. Same, in UK, never been asked for any set list details.
  18. My thoughts too, am very tempted by one of these.
  19. I think we’ll wait til we get the mixed/mastered copy through then decide on which track to put a video to, put that out to generate a bit of interest then look to release the album. We also included in the 12 tracks a song intended as a single so that may also come out before the album release.
  20. So just got back from recording our 2nd album (I wasn’t on the 1st). I’ve no tracks to put up hence putting here rather than in the other section. We were fortunate enough to do the recording in Portugal at Boz Boorers (of Polecats/Morrisey fame to name a couple of the many things he’s done). We didn’t take any instruments, just used what he had at the studio - for me a rather nice 1969 Fender Precision which played & sounded great. We set off Monday morning, got there early afternoon after Boz had picked us up and driven us to the studio which is at his place way up in the mountains. We set up the equipment and did one test track Monday evening to get the feel of the place. Work then commenced Tuesday at 11am and went through to 2:30am on Weds to break the back of the tracks, getting bass/drums/1 rhythm guitar down for all 12 songs. From there we completed the 12 songs by midday Friday, then headed to the airport for or flight home. Which was cancelled! So it was rescheduled for today and have just got home, exhausted but buzzing after such a great week. I can’t wait to hear the fully mixed & mastered album.
  21. I’ve been in many covers bands, to me they’re part of the entertainment business, if people didn’t want them they’d soon dry out.
  22. This looks very nice, quick question, when the Drive is selected is there an increase in volume or does it remain constant?
  23. I’ve just recorded a 12 song album this week. I used the D string for one note, didn’t use the G string. Which of course says more about my style of playing than number of strings needed. But for me it all comes back to the tools for the job thing. I’d have no problem using a 5 string bass if it were the best instrument for me (including the required ergonomics given my glass back) even if I didn’t use either the low B or the G.
  24. I never bothered with any of this until my last band, I have a piece of each bit of merch we did, plus a copy of the gig listings. I also have a tattoo of the bands logo, all the names of the countries we played (9) and the logo of the Rebellion Festival with the years we played it.
