He was playing that when I saw them at the Cornwall Coliseum in about 1979-my first ever gig!

A couple of the shops around here are selling Adam Black Precision basses-very good for the money-about £70 I think in one shop-I'd be tempted myself if I was in the market for a backup. Try and get a decent amp-the Roland Cubes are pretty good, as are some of the smaller Ashdowns.

Why's there a big mushroom in the middle?

John Otway, the man's a genius. I have a Shure PG58-basically a budget SM58. The chap in the shop where I bought it told me that to most people's ears there's very little difference in the sound, it's in the longevity that the difference lies-he reckoned an SM58 ought to be good for 15-20 years' use, whereas a PG58 will probably only last 7 or 8. How much of that is true I don't know. The PG was about £50 ish packaged with a lead, although not a particularly long one. I see GAK do them on their own for £34, and you need to get a lead for it. The SM58 with a lead is £80, the Beta (which I understand is excellent) is £120ish. I have no complaints with mine-obviously I'd like a more expensive one, but it does the job fine.

Or pick up a cheap one and see if fretless suits you. I've toyed with the idea for a while (that's how I found that site). There's been a few fretlesses in the For Sale section here for less than £100. I was tempted, but I've gone off the idea now. At the moment I'm having similar thoughts about 5-strings.

Yep, the Aerodynes are all Japanese-in fact that one is a Japan-only version with a pickguard-the export versions don't have them. Lovely basses, but the bound edge, as noted, can be a bit uncomfortable over time. The carved top can cause problems if you want to change the bridge too, but it's not insurmountable. If none of that bothers you, go for it. I see the same seller has a black one too.

Our local FOPP (Truro) closed down, much to my disgust! I recently downloaded a couple of albums from The Hold Steady. A cross between Springsteen and Husker Du-Good stuff.

I met Les once backstage at the York Festival. Very pleasant chap he was too. Did some cracking stuff with the Bunnymen, who should have been huge, but seem to be almost forgotten now. I remember his blue Jazz too, and I have a mental picture of him playing a natural wood finish bass too, but that could be the old brain playing tricks.

Wire brush ought to do it! Seriously, I'd have thought that if it would come off easily, the seller would have done it. I wonder if T-Cut or Brasso or the like would make a difference? In any case, as you say, it's a beautiful bass, and the marks aren't in a noticeable place.

Don't like it. Looks quite dated to my eyes. What's that extra hole in the neck plate?

Just got off the phone from our guitarist-he's like a dog with two appendages-he's just found out he won a USA Strat in the Fender prize draw! Result! (Why couldn't he have won a Precision??)

In the 80's, it was Phil Mitchell (no not him out of Eastenders!) Nowadays Wilko's bass player is of course-Norman Watt-Roy!

If Fenders do it for you, I understand the Squier Vintage Modifieds are excellent. Also keep your eye on the Sale page here, you can get a lot of bass for not too much second hand-I paid £265 for a MIM Precision with Wizard Thumpers in it a while ago. Failing that you can't go wrong with Ibanez, or Yamaha. I think I'm right in saying that J&D thing may well be based on an Ibanez-you're better off buying a real one.

Our guitarist went, not spoken to him directly, only by text, but he seems to have enjoyed himself, and was blown away by Joe Bonamassa, as I thought he would be. Hopefully he will come back inspired!

Lovely looking basses-Ibanez were making some really nice body shapes back then.

Does look nice-I bet it won't be cheap. I see they're still using those silly slider/rotary EQ's.

This thread reminds me of a cartoon I saw years ago in one of the music papers-can't remember which one. It dated from when Brix was married to Mark E., and entailed her being chatted up by Pete Murphy of Bauhaus. Mark E. arrives on the scene, and proceeds to say something along the lines of 'Ah, thirties horrorstar, ah, Peel on balustrade, ah, I will go out there, ah, John H.Stracey in laundromat scam, ah!' At which point Brix tells Pete that Mark says to f*ck off or he'll tear his head off and sh*t down his neck. It brought a smile to my face, anyway. There was also a cartoon in a fairly recent Viz about a girl who sees the Fall on TV, and asks her Mum how she can be in a band like that. Mark E.Smith sticks his head through the window and proceeds to tell her all about buying an instrument and learning to play it and joining a band, and then invites her to join the Fall, at which point he then says he's bored of her now and sacks her.

Another Fall fan here-I've seen them a couple of times, last time was in 1994 in Penzance. Bloody superb stuff-if you want to elicit howls of outrage from your average listener-in-the street, put some Fall on. When they were on Jools a few years ago, after Hanley had left, their bass player had a very tasteful black/black/maple Precision not unlike my own.

I use one as an extension cab for my Trace 1X15 combo, and I think it's great. I got mine slightly by accident, I bought a bass I didn't get on with, took it back to exchange for something else, and to cut a long story short, ended up with one of these. It's light, looks good and does what I want it to. There are those that will tell you that they're not as good as other Hartke cabs-I can't comment as I've not used any others, but I have no complaints.
