1.
I was looking at the fender aerodyne jazz bass (a bit above the price range) as an upgrade if I cant find anything different that suits. note taking is a very good idea, cheers for the advice
Just a thought, but if you do like the idea of an aerodyne, perhaps get one of the Retrovibe Aero basses? http://www.probass.co.uk/Home.html they're pretty cheap, plus with the left over money you could slap in some CTS pots/switchcraft jack and upgrade the pups! I've only heard/read good reviews of them so far, main bad thing about them it seems is that the J pup is a bit weak, but of course with the money left over you can easily buy a nice Wizard 84 or something I'm thinking of doing this once if I manage to sell my 5 string, hopefully I'll have enough from that sale to fund it
2. What're the dimensions? I'm thinking perhaps I could fit 'em to my LTD...probably not, but you never know
3. Have you tried emailing Andy at wizard? I found him to be very helpful when I was trying to figure out if 64s or 84s would be better for my VMJ...I'd say your best bet is to email him, tell him the sound you're after, tell him the string spacing issue etc, the worse he can do is say he can't do it, which I doubt! I can't reccommend wizard pups enough, they've made my squire sound better than any USA jazz I've ever played! (Perhaps I've only played the duds?) It might cost you a little bit extra, I'm not sure as I only ordered 'stock' pickups...But I've no doubt that it'd be 100% worth the extra expense! At the end of the day, it can't hurt to ask! Good luck with the pup hunt
4. Damn this bass looks fine! I've been thinking about this course for a while, may have to dip into 'oh-sh*t-what-just-happened!?' funds! If I were you I'd be tempted to just have a piezo bridge and leave the pups out of it, it looks so damn nice without them I'm truly envious though, I'd love a bass with darkstars!
5.
Thanks. I'll have a look. It might be worth me getting a bass with a pickup right next to the neck..... but I'm not sure because I can cope just fine with basses that don't have this.
I'd be wary of this if I were you...playing up against the neck on say a Jazz bass sounds great in my opinion, not a good sound for every situation, but certainly has it's uses! But if you play near the neck on an SG bass with the neck pup only, well it's just sludge. Maybe you'd like that sound, someone's got too, otherwise they wouldn't keep the pickup there! Although honestly I can't think of anyone who owns an SG bass who doesn't just use the bridge pup. Basically, if you're loving the tone you get from where the pup is now, then stick with it I say...Of course it's always worth a quick try out in a shop on a bass with a different pup position
6.
Sure you can! They're all over the place...
I mean because it's got that open rout between the pup an the volume/tone, a clear guard might look a tad odd? I would've thought so anyway, although I guess if you're against odd you're not going to like this bass
7. Ooh, I like the look of that! If I were you I'd get a paisley pickguard! Shame you can't just get a clear one really...
8. I got some orange ones recently too, I really like them! They feel different than the black beauties I had before, I don't really know how to describe the feeling, perhaps they feel more coated? Feels a lot more like how I always thought a coated string would feel...They're not as harsh as the black beauties were when they were new, but I like that to be honest! Now i'm just waiting to see how long they last...Here's hoping they last at least a month before they start to really sound different!
9. I was wondering this earlier too, I've got a set of lovely wizard 64s on my VMJ, and I want new pots for it too! I can recall someone saying something about using a 500k for tone and 250k for the vol pots, is this a terribly bad idea? What would it do to my sound if I did this compared to if I had all 3 250k pots?
10. Bump + price drop! now actually a sensible price imo! Only just realised today how daft it was trying to sell it for 400! Many appologies
11.
Nice looking bass the Neons look great.. I take it they play just as well as they look... so what colour do I go for??
Only one way to know for sure! try to find single strings and jsut have each string be a different colour! I was thinking of doing this myself, and seeing as I can't find any single strings (not looked very hard though to be fair)...How long would the strings last in the packet? I would've thought pretty much indefinitely, but I'm sure little bits of dirt an such would get in there, do strings decay over time if they're left wrapped up in the packet?
12. thanks for the advice re-done the pictures again now! Hopefully that's better for you all!
13. The slim profile and thin nut is what seperates a jazz neck from a P neck. So yea, all jazz necks have a thin nut and slim profiles. Can't think of any stock fender jazz basses that have precision necks on them, so I guess all jazz basses have the same thin necks. I'm 99% certain that they haven't changed the profiles on jazz necks since they started making them.
14. I've never been a fan of white instruments...It looks great if the whole band plays whitei nstruments, but when it's just one person I don't like it :S That's oneo f the things that always sorta irritated me about the way fenders looked, the non-matching headstock! Guess that's why I've got a natural jazz
15. Well if your faker is still about then I'll be taking that for sure! But somehow I doubt it will, seems like too good a deal to be true really! haha.
16. With £200 you'll easily be able to get a secondhand VM squier! They're damn good if you get a nice one, I'd say you'd be best off hunting around for a second hand bass no matter what you do, but definitely a VMJ, can't recommend it enough!
17. HAH! A tempting offer! Aslong as you meant the singing guy...not the other one...If I get money from this then I might have to put it towards a tractor bass fund
