1. I think I'm going to stick with the jazz bass though, it more what I'm going for in looks, an I've played many jazz basses, and I know that the pup configuration is what I'm after, I don't need much choice, an I'm going for simplicity...sort of. It also seems to be cheaper than the cort by about £200, I've not got tons of money, so that £200 is quite a selling point for me! Thanks all the same though, I think I might reserve the cort for a later date, maybe if I decide to get a new 6string...
2. Well, I sorted out the problem with my fuzzy strings...after I put new strings on them, they were still buzzing a bit (But not as much???), so I put some tiny bits of rizla packets inbetween the string and the nut, to raise the string up a little, an it's worked fine! Hasn't made the 1st frets that much harder to play either...I'm going to have to lower the D a bit though, cos I'm finding it a lot more difficult than usual to intonate it Loving the colour of that SDGR300 marvin!
3. oh really? cool, well in that case it's a definite maybe...I do prefer the shape of a jazz though, guess it'll probably come down to the cost....although it would be nice to have a light bass for once, I think all my basses so far have been mahogany bodies, which I'm pretty sure can't be the lightest of woods... On the Cort, would I be able to wire the slap switch to be a series/parallel for when I've got both coils in the 'bucker on? Maybe a series/parallel between the two pups? That would be pretty cool...or perhaps a killswitch? That would be pretty damn handy! Wire the 3 knobs so it's v/v/t, so it's always in passive...Hmm, I'm liking the sound of this bass more an more, it would take a lot of work though...Still, be a pretty good accomplishment for me if I manage to pull it off! If I don't I'm sure I can get my uncle to help me fix it up so it works, haha.
4. Hmm, I was more looking for a passive bass to be honest, kinda fed up with messing about with EQs on my bass, an passive seems to work nicer with some effects pedals (Maybe it's just the basses/pedals I've tried, I don't know, but the active basses all seem to make my chorus pedal distort a bit on the lower notes). Plus I'd have to re-wire that bass so it's vol/vol, seems like a bit of a pain tbh...Although I guess since I'm going to be doing some wiring anyway when I install new pickups, I may as well...I dunno, I'd have to try one first I guess. I'll look into them for sure, I can always make them passive I guess. also, just noticed that Hipshot do brass or aluminium bridges, what's the differences between the two? Is there any tonal difference? sustain etc? the brass ones are more expensive, but only by £10 or so, so I'd like to find out, I want this bass to be perfect!
5. hmm, I've never tried nordstrand pups, so I'm not sure if they'd really be what I'm looking for...Would they fit under the pickup cover thing? I wanna fit one of them onto the bass, should make playing a lot easier for me.
6. Excellent...an yea, I'm sure I'd survive the extra weight...I wanted to put in the SD 1/4 pounder pups, cos every bass I've played with them in has growled like hell, but with a really nice clear tone, I love it. I was thinking about the CV, but I really REALLY want the bound&blocked neck, as horrible as it is, I actually want my bass to look as good as it sounds, an I think they look just brilliant! They both cost the same amount from what I've seen, so I'll go with the VMJ for now...I think the Gallery might have one in stock, in on their site, so I'm going give em a ring tomorrow to ask 'em then pop down to try it out...Might ask them about possibly selling my 5string through them (After I put it up here...first dibs for the basschatters!) Also, am I right in thinking that the maple body of the VMJ would give it more or a snappy attack? Because I'd like to get the sort of attack you get with a pick, but...using my fingers. Anyone know what size hipshot I'd need to buy to install in the VMJ? And if they come in black? and again, thanks for the advice!
7. Dammit, it's a brilliant idea, but I won't be in town on the 27th, I'll be in Brighton that weekend.
8. Hi, so I'm primarily a 5-6string player...Moved away from a 4 ages ago because I wanted the extra range...I've since come to realise that for my current band, I only need a 4string, a hipshot d-tuner wouldn't hurt of course, but that's all part of the plan... So yes, I wanted to get your advice! Because I know diddly-squat about basses, even less about anything remotely fender related...Basically, there's a few aesthetic requirements, I know what pups/bridge/tuners I want (I was also looking at those warwick just-a-nut I's, the brass ones, they looked pretty cool!)...So basically, I want either a nice Ash body (not sure how much this'd cost me) for a natural finish, or I could settle for a basswood finish an paint it yellow an get all black hardware. I also want a block&bound neck, cos it looks killer! I guess I would prefer a 5string, string it E-C, but I'm going to settle for a 4string for this band, it's all I need after all...It'll take some getting used to again! I was thinking of buying a vintage modified squier jazz, replacing the pups etc, seems the cheapest route to get what I really want...Is this wise? Or is shelling out the extra 300 worth it to get a '70s fender? Is the difference between the two just the hardware? I'm probably going to change everything, from the tuners to the electronics... What's the QC on the squier? would I be safe ordering one online? Or is it really a try-before-you-buy sorta thing? Anyone around London willing to let a young'un have a quick go on their vintage modified squier? I'd rather try at least one to make sure the neck is definitely ok...I doubt I'll have much trouble, it's a jazz bass, an I'm used to playing an ibby 6, so it's not like the neck will be too wide for me! Thanks for any/all advice!
9. Don't suppose you'd be interested in a trade for my LTD F405-FM? http://www.espguitars.com/esp2007/basses_f.html second one down.
10. Damn, if only you'd be interested in my LTD F405-FM...Curse it's rosewood board! Still, damn fine looking bass, whoever gets this is one lucky son of a...
11. Is this your first time trying to adjust to another neck profile? Because when I changed to my first 5, I couldn't stand it for about 8 months, but I persevered an now I play an Ibby 6, the transition from my 5 o my 6 was, well, virtually non-existent! Maybe it's because the ibby is a thinner neck profile though... If nothing else, maybe you could order a fretless jazz neck from warmoth or something? Sure it won't have the fender name on it, but when/ if you have to sell the fretless P, just stick the old neck back on so it's all original? That's what I'd do at least...Either way, good luck with it all!
12. I love my Ibby SR506 so far! First 6string, got it about a month ago from The Gallery. I was looking at maybe buying the Tim Landers sig Peavey they had, but I thought I may as well try it, thinking "Well if it's near as good, then I'll buy this, save myself £250 or so" boy was I shocked to hear an feel just how superior it was, lol. So yea, 100% Ibby fan now! I used to bitch about Ibanez cos my first practice amp's an Ibanez, an it was/still is the worse practice amp I've ever heard! Anywho, there was a couple of questions I wanted to ask you basschatters about, an I figure here's best since there's bound to be a fair few who own the same bass as me! Ok, so basically, I'm finding that whenever I play, the strings I'm not playing seem to cause a fair bit of noise....sympathizing frequencies? I'm not sure what the technical term is...Either way, I heard that the mono-rail bridges can help sort this problem out. I know it's probably mainly my technique that needs improving, but I'd really rather work on other things like getting 3finger plucking and tapping. Also, my G buzzes like crazy when I play it open, from the 1st up it's fine, so clearly it's hitting the 1st fret...Is this a nut problem? Cos if buzzes a LOT more than the C or D, which do buzz a little (I need to tweak the truss rod a bit, haven't round to it cos it's my first time doing so, an knowing me I'll probably break it)... Thanks for any advice you guys've got for me! funnily enough, despite these annoyances, I still much prefer my ibby to my LTD!
13. Thanks, sorry but that's what I meant by the bass gallery >.> They have some nice 5 string jazz's in there, but no cheap ones. I would try out the higher models, but I can't really afford to buy an expensive jazz just so I can rip out pretty much everything, lol. I'm beginning to think that I might have too though...maybe I could just sell my current 5string to get some of the money back, hehe.
14. Hi all, pretty new here...I asked this over at talkbass, but what with them all being in the states, it was pretty pointless come to think of it... So yes, on with it! I've been wanting a 5string jazz for a while now! I'd rather get a cheap squire or something, I plan to mod it. I love the sound of SD jazz pups, not so much a fan of the fender stock ones. I was also planning on dropping a badass bridge an hipshot tuners in. So here's my problem, I live in London, unfortunately haven't got a car or anything, so I'm limited to public transport (huzzah...). I don't know of anywhere that actually stocks 5string jazz basses besides the bass cellar at denmark street...And I've had enough less-than-enjoyable experiences with them to know that I'd rather not set foot in that store again. The Bass Gallery is really close to me, but unfortunately they don't appear to have any cheap 5string jazzes in stock, at least not according to their website...I've gotta go in for some maintenance on my 6string soon anyway, so I'll have a poke around just in case... Does anyone know of any shops (Preferably somewhere that won't turn me away just because I'm young...I realise that young people tend to mistreat instruments, but it's still annoying to get treated like some mindless yob who doesn't understand that perhaps playing Higher Ground 50 billion times in a row isn't very nice, I don't even know how to play that dammed song!) that would stock such an item? I've looked into buying them online, but I really wanna try it out first, gotta find those dead spots so I don't get surprised by them! speaking of which, are the 5strings as prone to the dead spot on the 5-7th fret on the G as much as the 4stringers? Thanks for any/all help! Jack.
15. I'm interested, but I need to know one thing for sure...has this got the new slimmer neck? or one of the previous chunky necks?
