Things you don't want to hear before a gig....
deepbass5 replied to Bilbo's topic in General Discussion
Forgot this one. My son had been in hospital for over a week, couldn't hold anything down. Had a week of tests cameras down then up and x-rays etc. It got to the Friday when our band had a Young Farmers Ball in Wiltshire. He had a lower abdominal X-ray planned for the afternoon, and they found he had a twisted bowl. The nurse told us the news and said he would need and operation. I said to the wife not to worry about the gig as they never do anything at weekends, then the Doctor came in and said we are transferring him to Oxford for an emergency immediately. Wife/ (singer) went in the ambulance and I went home to phone round for a band that could cover our gig. All was well and we even got the Gig back the following year. -

Thats great Stages, now thats a topic on its own. Reminds me of a club in Egham we did some years ago. Turned up and a whole lorry load of the weeks drinks delivery was on the stage. Even though it was not our job to move it, we would never have been set up in time if we left it to the steward. -
MB was the first up with a real light weight amp with 500W on Offer. Even though EA and Epi were in the mix for some years before their Amps were still a fair size and weight. The market took a few years to catch up, Design, testing and getting CE rated etc. I would be an Aguilar 500 owner if they had got the European certs together sooner but it seemed to take them about 18 months. Have owned my LMK for about 7 years now. And it is still my first choice for live and recording work due to its DI and quiet fan etc. So I agree its just GAS

The one I hate, you have just finished setting up, and a Disco turns up and you're told you have to share the stage. The worst like this, not only did we have to breakdown the gear but then told the people were also dancing on the stage as well. So we set up one side facing the Disco the other. The punters were eating in the dark 6 foot below to our right. You guessed. It was a local council organise event in the town hall. -

Today I tried a few basses....why can't shops set them up?
Absolutely! I worked in guitar shops for 16 years and managed some in Denmark Street as well as the Bass Centre for a while. Here was my philosophy

If you don't have time to set them up before someone tries - take 2 minutes to adjust the truss rod at least before handing it to someone. Customers always appreciated that.
Teach staff to adjust a truss rod, it so simple a child could do it. Andy's in Denmark Street had me doing set ups at age 15, none of it is rocket science!
Guys in shops these days leave it to the shop tech so can't be bothered to set them up, see above
There really is absolutely no excuse to be handed a guitar in a shop that's not playable.
Sorry Chili, If i owned a shop I would not want my staff to go arround adjusting trusrods in five minutes to suit each customers preference, a bass could take a day to react to a 1/4 turn then a 1/4 turn the next day. I do my own but would be happy to get it right in 3 days along with string and bridge adjustments. This problem in shops is about buying and selling as quick as possible by people who do not play bass possibly not even guitar properly. A bespoke bass shop is unlikely to show this sort of contempt, so i only use them now and avoid the noisey guitar starter KIt shops on the high street. -
In my P bass days I would always be on the Pup, but since going to 5 string and the need to move the thumb i now rest on the B string and move this to the E when playing the higher three strings so muting B & E. But should say I learnt left hand muting from the start to control note length. so left hand is still the main control. but could not play without a floating thumb now between bridge and neck depending on the sound i want, and the muting comes secondary.

EQ system for magnetic and piezo setup
deepbass5 replied to franzbassist's topic in Repairs and Technical
I Think John East does a buffer pre amp board, for linking a Piezo with a mag pickup. In fact I am about to embark on the same quest for my Status electro and was going to ask John to have a look and suggest the best configuration. -
