Mottlefeeder
My (limited) understanding of soloing is that when someone else solos, you stay out of their way, but in this video Jaco is embellishing the groove while the guitarist is soloing, and breaking in to the drum solo, while both the other band members tone it down when he solos. Is this normal band behavior, or normal Jaco behaviour? David

Two fantastic bass players here, sadly failing to make amazing things happen! The bass Jaco was playing here was borrowed from a guy called Greg Wilson. Cairobill
Pastorius had a reputation as being warm hearted and generous on one hand and being a total dick on the other. Probably something to do with being mentally ill and a terrible cokehead towards the end...I, for one, totally love his bass playing. He was also a serious R&B player before he went off into the jazz thing - he knew a lot about how to drive a band groovewise. N

He comes across as smug and arrogant, I don't know if that is correct but unfortunately that's how I feel.[/quote] Sorry if I come across as smug or arrogant for my comment One person's arrogance is anothers supreme confidence. I believe that we are born perfect and get contaminated by all and sundry, mainly our parents and that get's reinforced by life experienced through our filters and prejudices (there's plenty of evidence to suggest that Jaco had a childhood that contributed to his unusual behaviour). What people do is behave badly. I would argue that this doesn't make you a bad person. I do believe that just about everyone keeps some of that core of inner perfection intact and that it is reachable and remains significant in our lives. What I'm saying is that I find it really hard to 'hate' or intensely dislike anyone especially when I've not met them. The reality is I've met and in some cases worked with people who have earned reputations or done things that would label them abhorrent. I've never met anyone that was thoroughly dislikeable and I'm pretty sure that if I'd have met Jaco and got in touch with his true self I'd have been entirely entertained and touched. I'm not a naive academic or someone whose led a sheltered existence, this is just my experience of life. So when you say something like that my instinct is to respond Pedro

iamthewalrus
JP - still my all time favourite. I bought this on video when it came out & must have watched it about 30 times (or more...still don't play like 'im though...). The Jazz bass in the video had a Precision bass neck on it so JP could stretch his hands out a lot more than on the conventional Jazz neck. Like Jeff Berlin or Janek Gwizdala, he's a Marmite bass player - you like him or you don't....

If that bass had hit him he'd have been a hospital job!
