First of all, some pics for the porn stash:

It's had the full seeing-to: stripdown, thorough clean-up, frets polished (they didn't need crowning) and setup - apart from adjusting the truss rod; I don't have the correct tool & it doesn't need it anyway. It's strung with Picato 735s, as recommended by Eric, and it's a lovely player with a wonderfully comfortable neck shape, particularly accentuated following a decent setup and strings that fit!

So far I've only played it on my own & at practice - my band's having lineup & member availability problems & haven't been able to gig since before I got the Peavey - but I'm finding the weight (and thinking about it, perhaps the weight distribution) to be a problem. Sonically it's very versatile and I think if I could stay comfortable for long enough I could coax the necessary cutting but guttural snarly racket out of it (think Rick-era Geddy Lee in a fight with JJ Burnel), but after 10 minutes my back feels like it should be making the sound I want to hear from the bass!

This is quite odd, because my long-time favourite bass (a tricked-out JapCrap Jazz copy) is only 3/4 lbs lighter (it's 9.94 lbs while the Peavey's 10.75) but I can happily play a 2-hour rehearsal with it, and have gigged it hundreds of times. I'm inclined to think the T-40's significantly heavier in the body so it puts stress on my back in a different way.

It's become one of these basses where I think I should sell it, right up to the point I pick it up & play it. Sitting down, obviously. :)

Thanks for the advice Eric - I think I'll have to have a lookaround for some luthiers.

As for the weight of the T-40, I much prefer it to other basses. I find it more tiring to use lighter basses, because I tend to stoop. The T-40 forces me to have a better posture :) A good strap helps too - I have a Racer X from Couch which is very comfy and has no problems with the T-40's weight.

By all means post the pics Eric!

That Tanburst's an absolute stunner, & in a way I'm not too surprised at the price given the finish & condition. T-40s seem to be on the up at the moment, one like mine only quite a lot rougher went for £340 a week or two ago.

Definitely hanging onto mine - it really is a delight to play.

By the way Eric, completely forgot to get those Tele Thinline bits off to you - I'll get it sorted!

I don't know, pop out for a couple of hours, sit down to munch on my sandwich
and the pair of you. . . . .

They are an index mark for the volume and tone.
The cutter removes the top layer of black material and reveals the white.
The "10" on the dial lines up with it when on full.

The later ones didn't have that feature.

Cheers. :)

Right - I'm with you now, sorry!

Just had a look through the T-40 Porn thread & it looks like earlier toaster pup models all seem to have these holes, drilled as position markers next to the controls. It looks like it was discontinued on later models - one pic of a rail pup example has them & the rest don't. As far as I can see the ones with markers are all like mine - just a hole drilled in the plate, with the inside of the foil showing through. These are clearly visible on one pic of Eric's toaster tanburst, & look just the same as mine. I assume there was never an insert or inlay in these - just a bit of sticky foil!

Is yours a later bass?

J.

Edit: Ha - cross post!

Edit v.2 - Eric's right, it doesn't go all the way through.

I didn't get much sleep last night..... :)

Mine's a 79 and does have those holes, and has two extra pickguard screw holes too.

There must be a nice T40 under here somewhere. First rosewood white one I've seen. Possible refinish? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Peavey-T-40-t-40-Ele...3#ht_500wt_1089

EDIT: Where can I find some replacement pickup rings? Mine are on the verge of being useless now due to them falling apart (just the ends with the screws remaining, not the long sides). The only place I found is here http://www.fretsonthenet.com/Peavey.htm but the guy want's about $60. Is that reasonable?

Try contacting the guy here - I got a set of pup rings from him a while back that were like new. I think they were 30 quid for the pair (but probably less, knowing my memory)...

Had a T-45 a while (after asking BC's collective opinion - thanks guys! :)) but didn't get on with it. Clanky tone, heavy to point of unplayable, I had to replace the tuners a few days after getting it and it was badly out-of-tune at the 7th fret. No amount of intonation tweakage made a difference, so I assume it was in dire need of a pro set-up. Beyond my (feeble) skills, regardless, and I sold it after a few months.

Lovely looking bass, but not for me. Neither was its replacement, a 2008 Ray in a distinctly similar paint-job and, after playing a load of Fender Jazz, I ended up back where I started with a Warwick Corvette STD. Nicer to play and sounds far better in a mix, imho. You live and learn.

Hi. Sorry to hear about your troubles. :)

I have a beat up T-45 - in bits at the mo' as the first 7 frets have shot it!!

Always the case - easy to take 'em apart, then ages to get the job done!!

Mine is heavy but has a mellow to bright tone, using both the coil select
and the tone control. BIG sound.
Perhaps your 7th fret issues were wolf tones/string type.
There is a massive amount of adjustment on the bridge and all the necks were
machine made.
Horses for courses - Ya plays what Ya like - Sounds like yuou are a Warwick man. :)
